Subject: Scottish Mudgather Octoberish 2007? From: John MacKenzie Date: 07 Feb 07 - 12:01 PM Who would be interested in coming up to the highlands for a wee Mudgather at the back end of this year? It would hopefully be held in a wee hotel between Lairg and Bonar Bridge, there is a station close by, and also a fabulous Youth Hostel called Carbisdale Castle. It's a 60 mile drive from Inverness Airport. I was thinking in terms of late October [after the Getaway] or early November, at a time where it wouldn't clash with any festival weekends. Giok |

Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather Octoberish 2007? From: Jack Campin Date: 14 Feb 07 - 07:29 AM It's better to avoid English school holidays as that makes transport much more crowded and difficult. September would be better (early in the month would also let people doing long trips from overseas combine it with a visit to Whitby FF and/or the Edinburgh Festival). Chorus: The midgies, the midgies, I'm no gonna kid yiz, The midgies is really the limit, With teeth like piranhas they drive you bananas, If you let them get under your semmit. The Lord put the Garden of Eden on Earth, And it's north of the Tweed we believe. Aye, Scotland's the place And the whole human race started off with McAdam and Eve. In 6 days or under, God finished this wonder Except for the Forth and Tay bridges Then always a bloke for a practical joke He made Scotland the home of the midges. Chorus Back in 1314, the proud Edward was keen To take Scotland into his care, But he made a U-turn when he reached Bannockburn Just a few weeks before Glasgow Fair. Oh the midges let loose by King Robert the Bruce Straight into the English got tore So they ran off in tears and for 600 years They've been blocking the A74 Chorus Now never forget, when the sun's going to set And the midges arise on Loch Eck Like the vampires you see played by Christopher Lee They will give you a pain in the neck. You can smack them and whack them In vain you'll attack them, For they know every move that you make. If ye manage to kill yin another half million are ready to come to the wake. |

Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather Octoberish 2007? From: John MacKenzie Date: 14 Feb 07 - 09:06 AM Well it's a problem, and the main guiding factor is the slowing down of the Festival scene in England, where most attendees would be coming from. There seems to be festival or six almost every weekend of the year from Easter right through. There is a bank holiday weekend in September in Scotland and Banbury is early October, then I go to America in early November. we will get less midgies, and better accommodation rates then too. I have to sit down and talk to the guy who owns the hotel, as that's our guiding factor. Watch this space Giok |
Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather Octoberish 2007? From: An Buachaill Caol Dubh Date: 14 Feb 07 - 10:17 AM Believe it or no, the words to "The Midgies" (and perhaps the music too, such as it is) are by none other than Kenneth McKellar. He could sing Burns, but never rival him..... |
Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather Octoberish 2007? From: John MacKenzie Date: 14 Feb 07 - 11:35 AM Right folks I have spoken to Graham the hotel owner and he is very enthusiastic. He's a folkie himself, and a regular Sidmouth attendee. He has said rooms in the hotel would be £25 per night B&B, he also has 3 self catering units, with more becoming available as he gets them renovated, they would be cheaper than the hotel rate, but no figure available at the moment. there is also as I said Carbisdale Castle Youth Hostel across the river, and there are a few B&Bs not too far away. Wild camping is available, both for tents and caravans, or even motor homes! Banbury is the weekend of the 13th October, so the weekends of either the 20th, or 27th October have been provisionally reserved. I now need to know who is interested, and which weekend they prefer. I will go with the majority choice, so I apologise in advance if we choose the one you don't want. Can't please all of the people all of the time! So over to you guys! Giok |

Half term appears to be the week in between the two dates. I'm quite happy for the children to come, but I will need to know who, how, when and why, they will be organised/watched over. I don't think they'd be allowed in the bar area, but there is the rest of the hotel, albeit a small hotel. Found this... "In Scotland, young people of 14 years of age or older can be in a bar during the permitted opening hours provided that they do not drink alcohol. Where the licensed premises hold a children's certificate, then a child under 14 may be allowed in for the purpose of eating a meal. However, children must be accompanied by someone over 18 years old and may only be present between the hours of 11.00 and 20.00." It is also worth remembering for the smokers amongst you, that smoking is not allowed in Scottish pubs, although it will be the same for England by then too! Carole and Andrew, I don't know how much it will cost you to get to Luton or Gatwick, but EasyJet has some really cheap flights to Inverness if booked early enough, like about £12 each way. Your planning for the gather is around the time of Dougie MacLean's Perthshire Amber festival which Dary and I went to for the first time last year in our efforts to recover. It was absolutely fab and we have already decided to go again this year. Dates for this year are not yet on his website but to get some idea of what it is about go into www.perthshireamber.com Fitting in a mudgather (provided it is not too far away) at the time would be absolutely great. We will watch the postings with interest. By the way, most of the headliners for Banbury are now booked and up on the website www.banburyfolkfestival.co.uk |

They have 189 beds and it's £15.00 a night for YHA members and £16.00 otherwise. Can't get any prices from easyjet aet (too early), but I'm up for the hostel. They also do breakfast and dinner. |

Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: John MacKenzie Date: 20 Feb 07 - 09:45 AM Usually the format is a 'jump in' session, and/or a round the room rota. Might do what we did at Portaferry last week, and run Saturday night like a Folk Club, with people doing 'spots'. I have vague dreams of getting a ceilidh band sorted out, and I may have a caller, but don't know about the space or inclination for dancing. Don't do it myself, they told me when I got my hips sorted out I'd be able to Morris dance, but thank god it hasn't happened yet! Giok |

Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: MudGuard Date: 24 Feb 07 - 11:06 AM As already mentioned in Portaferry, second half of October or November is out of question for me - although I'd love to go back to Carbisdale Castle, a great youth hostel (but beware, a Scottish bagpipe player on the big space on top of the stairs is much too loud (the only sound I know that's worse than that is LTS + GTS behind me in the car ...) |

Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 Feb 07 - 12:19 PM I spoke to Graham the landlord this afternoon, and he has 3 people confirmed so far. It would be nice if we could get a few more confirmed,it is only a small hotel, and I'm sure we can get enough of us to fill it. That way we can play till the early hours, with no chance of disturbing some tweed suited visiting angler. Graham is happy for us to do this, but only if we can provide enough people for him to turn a way non Folkie Guests. Also regarding that point, although this is a MudClan Gathering, there is no reason why non-mudactters can't attend as long as they are folk orientated they're welcome. So enough bookings means that we get the place to ourselves, and Graham will refuse other bookings. Go to it chaps, and chappesses! Giok |

Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: Tattie Bogle Date: 27 Feb 07 - 07:09 PM Well if they're not, that'll be tough, as I have been known to try to sing while accompanying myself on guitar! When I spoke to Graham, he asked what instruments I played, and it didn't seem to cause a problem. Breton Cap, 'twould be great if you and the missis come up too! Probably taking a car up frae Edinburgh, but already have one, poss 2 passengers + mobile orchestra. |

Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: Murray MacLeod Date: 01 Mar 07 - 02:34 PM well, that's my room booked. looking forward to it , I must admit. Giok, have you decided on the musical format for the weekend ? singaround, in the round, in the bar, all three nights ? or would a Open Mike type night on the Saturday be a viable idea ? Graham apparently has amplification available if required .... |
Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: John MacKenzie Date: 01 Mar 07 - 02:43 PM Bar might be a bit small for us all to be in there at once in it's present form, although Graham says he is extending it in due course. As I said above, the Saturday night will be a sort of concert format with people putting their names down for a spot, and then I will run it like a folk club, floor spots type format. It will be held in the function room with amplification if required. I wonder how many people would be interested in going on a distillery tour on the Saturday. If enough were I would arrange for the tour to happen. I suggest Dalmore, near Alness, as it's a nice friendly wee place, and about the nearest one to the venue. Giok |
Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Mar 07 - 04:34 AM The Dalmore , the fact that this whisky was originally distilled by MacKenzie's, has nothing whatsoever to do with it being my chosen distillery. Giok ¦¬] |

Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: Jack Campin Date: 01 May 07 - 12:26 PM After a quick overview with Google Earth, I realize there are a *lot* of tunes associated with that area - mainly by G.S. MacLennan: Mrs Macpherson of Inveran, The Falls of Shin, Inveran. A bit further afield and by other people, Dornoch Links, The Balintore Fishermen, a tune relating to Portmahomack. Any ballads? |
Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: Tattie Bogle Date: 04 May 07 - 01:48 PM Not sure, Jack, will ask around. Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: Liz the Squeak Date: 05 May 07 - 02:13 AM Spoons are great instruments. Not only can you play them rhythmically to provide counterpoint and accompaniament, but they're useful if someone drops your change into your beer, or if anyone brings cake or soup. You just need to remember to lick 'em clean after. Try eating soup with a melodeon! LTS |

Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: Catherine Jayne Date: 03 Jul 07 - 11:51 AM Liz...you would need to get a cab into Inverness (not sure if there is a bus) to get the train. Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 20th 2007 From: Effsee Date: 03 Jul 07 - 06:52 PM Ah! That would be a difficulty, my apologies, I was unaware of that. Reading back through the posts I think it would be very expensive to hire a mini bus to go all the way to Invershin (if that was what was intended), not too bad just to take folks to Inverness station though. I'm almost sure there is a regular bus service from the airport into town. Then throw yourselves on the mercies of Scotrail! |

Very disappointed, but hope you all have a wonderful time. TB |

Subject: RE: Scottish Mudgather October 19th/ 20th/21st 2007 From: lady penelope Date: 21 Aug 07 - 12:30 PM Must say I'm kinda in your boat Drumshanty. Although I'd still be flying to Invershin as I live in London! However, last year on my 40th birthday I decided enough was enough, I was fed up of camping in a tent that you had to 're-birth' yourself to get out of (and get dressed lying down in) and of basically not going to enough fests and gathers due to lack of transport. I've scored a tent I can stand up in (and the foot print isn't much bigger than my old tent) and I've got as far as passing my theory test. Unfortunately, as I haven't got access to a car to practice in, I need more lessons and they're having to happen as and when I get the money. But still, shouldn't be too long now as my instructor is making iencouraging noises about booking tests and my mother has promised that I can borrow her car once I get my full license. So Next year promises to be fun!!! My poor husband will become a folk widower.... |
