Thanks

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOUSE
Words and music by Bob Hilliard
As recorded by Rusty Draper

The railroad comes through the middle of the house
The railroad comes through the middle of the house
The trains all come through the middle of the house
Since the company bought the land.

They let us live in the front of the house
They let us live in the back
But there ain't no living in the middle of the house
'Cause that's the railroad track.

When a bill collector comes to the house
He knocks and bangs on the door
So we sit him right down in the middle of the house
And he never comes back no more
No, he never comes back no more.

The railroad comes through the middle of the house
The railroad comes through the middle of the house
It comes and goes through the middle of the house
And the trains are all on time
And here comes the 5:09.

The railroad comes through the middle of the house
In and out of the middle of the house
Right smack dab through the middle of the house
Where the parlor used to be.

There's a great big door in the front of the house
There's a little old door in the back
But we can't have doors in the middle of the house
'Cause that's the railroad track.

A relative came to visit the house
He liked to scream and fuss
So we sat him right down in the middle of the house
And he never more bothered us
No, he never more bothered us.

The railroad comes through the middle of the house
The railroad comes through the middle of the house
It comes and goes through the middle of the house
Since the company bought the land.

I'm singing this song in the middle of the house....

Funny, here in the thread, it says Vaughn Munroe. However, in the DT, it says Bob Hilliard. Wonder which is correct.

I haven't heard this since it used to be regularly requested on the BBC's Children's Family Favourites. It has a very perky little tune, which I had completely forgotten about for years and years, but it's come rushing back ......

My nephew, now 24, used to love when I added him to the song:
Christopher came to my house one day
He rapped and rapped on the door
So I sat him right down in the middle of the house
And he never came back no more...

Hello, from the Frozen North!

I just bought the Vaughn Monroe CD that has the song called the Middle of the House - for some reason, I haven't been able to get it off my mind lately. An Alaskan band I used to play with used to do this years ago, and it was pretty funny. I went on the digitrad search engine and looked for the Middle of the House - here's what I found:
Love, Robin

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOUSE
(Bob Hilliard)

The railroad comes through the middle of the house.
The railroad comes through the middle of the house.
The trains all come through the middle of the house
Since the company bought the land.

They let us live in the front of the house.
They let us live in the back.
But there ain't no living in the middle of the house
'Cause that's the railroad track.

When a bill collector comes to the house
He knocks and bangs on the door.
So we sit him right down in the middle of the house
And he never comes back no more.
No, he never comes back no more.

The railroad comes through the middle of the house.
The railroad comes through the middle of the house.
It comes and goes through the middle of the house.
And the trains are all on time.
And here comes the 5:09.

The railroad comes through the middle of the house,
The in and out of the middle of the house,
Right smack dab through the middle of the house,
Where the parlor used to be.

There's a great big door in the front of the house.
There's a little old door in the back.
But we can't have doors in the middle of the house
'Cause that's the railroad track.

A relative came to visit the house.
He liked to scream and fuss.
So we sat him right down in the middle of the house
And he never more bothered us.
No, he never more bothered us.

Oh, the railroad comes through the middle of the house.
The railroad comes through the middle of the house.
It comes and goes through the middle of the house
Since the trains are all on time.

I'm singing this song in the middle of the house.
***

As I recall hearing it, the last line segues into train noises.

Artist on most popular version: Vaughn Monroe
(Dr. Demento frequently plays the version by Rusty Draper, which was
also very popular)

There is definitely some form of telepathy on this site - I'd mentioned this song in another thread mainly out of nostalgia, and her it is again.

Yeah - but you missed the important bit. Right at the end, after "I'm singing this song in the middle of the house." there's the train whistle and sounds of obliterated singer. Tee hee. How very droll.

Hmmm. I remember my parents singing it as: "The railroad runs through the middle of the house..." I guess they were unwittingly participating in The Folk Process.

Definitely brings back memories of childhood. My brother constructed a magnificent minature tain layout inspired by this song for his children, to experience as they were growing up. It was always amusing to see what the train could pick up in its "cowcatcher" as it passed through various buildings.

SharonA - I remember it as railroad runs, too - a nice bit of alliteration.

Dave - the link didn't work. Is that down to my connection or your link?

The song uses three chords. If you are playing in E, it uses E, A and B7. If you are in Bb, It uses Bb, F and G7. Like that.

The Rusty Draper version is in G, so the chords are G, C and D (or D7 if you prefer).

G                              C
The railroad comes through the middle of the house
    D                         G
The railroad comes through the middle of the house
G                              C
The railroad comes through the middle of the house
          G      D          G
Since the company bought the land.

The verses pretty much stick to that pattern.
