You don't want the dogs figuring out this thing about good looks if you can avoid it. My pit bull is a charismatic pooch, great looking, classic features, and the catahoula is more mutt-like, and she knows it. Dog envy is not an easy thing to contain sometimes (it means the catahoula wants to jump on people for attention).

Ebbie, Ariel's just a little bit of a thing. She's the smallest mal we've ever had -- just about 65 pounds. She's also the prettiest we've ever had, but we're not telling Breeze.

The mal puppy is Ariel's singleton pup that was raised by the Old English. These are just some better pictures with Ariel's pup (now called "Sidney") a few weeks older than the original pictures. Ariel had a big year herself -- after the puppy episode.

Considering how many dogs use their tails as lethal weapons (my two can knock a knee cap off if you're not careful, and I sometimes wonder that they haven't blinded each other with regular Whap! Whap! Whap!s across the face), you probably need to give that as much time to heal as possible before removing the bandage and giving it full range of motion. I'm sure yours is a happy dog who would flail you black and blue, given half a chance and a healthy tail! ;-D

BZ went for a week without any feeling or use of his tail. The only good news at that point was no sign of necrosis. Then, at the end of the first week as I was walking up the sidewalk toward him, he wagged the tip of his tail beyond the bandage. I was SO happy but tried to contain myself -- not get my hopes up.

About three weeks into it he finally raised the tail up over his back. He still can't control it like a normal tail. And it does have a bend in it. But it appears almost normal much of the time. And happily, it won't need to be docked.

The vet was thrilled and not a little surprised when she saw him two weeks after the accident. She says it was much to his advantage that he was so young. She also says it may improve even more over time as he uses it more and his muscles mature.

Thanks again for asking. It's happy news.

We had him don the scarecrow outfit for a "If I Only Had A Brain" greeting card.

Iim taking him to the vet in an hour or so. I should know better by then. It got caught in the door. Right now he can't hold it up (mal's tails curl over their backs), and it has a bend in it. Curiously, as hair-covered as it is, you can quite easily see a ring around his tail where the injury is.

the picture of Cubby and Ariel reminds me of a litter I saw for sale recently - Samoyed x Norwegian Elkhound at Barrontop Fun Farm in co Tyrone, N Ireland. Don't know why they bred these pups though I'm sure they'll be very nice as long as they find good homes.

I met a few malamutes recently. The owners say they are very lovable dogs.
Congrats to Ariel and owners for her accomplishments in the obedience and show ring! Do you enter sledding competitions or is that just something you do at home?

You should have SEEN the leap my pit bull did early this morning. I woke because my two girls had spotted a mouse (!) and were in hot pursuit. It apparently sought shelter under a huge bank of lantana (the whole thing is about 12 feet long, six feet wide, and at least 5 feet tall). The pit launched herself (Nureyev style) over the top of most of the width and height, connecting at the apex of the hedge, though I must say the landing wasn't pretty (Chevy Chase style). But it worked--the mouse fled, but it escaped up the fence. My lantana has a pit bull-sized part down the middle now.

I met a poodle which had been fostered by a working sheepdog.

It had gone out with the other pups to learn to work sheep. The only problem was that it looked more like a sheep than a dog.

Poor little thing was either stamped on by sheep not recognising it was a dog, or nipped by dogs trying to push it into the sheep flock because it was white and woolly.

It had to be sent to live with people who did not go near sheep, but it spent many hours rounding up their chickens and trying to do that sheep dog low level slither and stare thing. Not even the chickens were impressed. It would slither up to them, trying to look menacing, and they would peck it's nose.

My dogs had a few commercial dog beds when they were still big pups, but after about the third one was ripped to pieces, stuffing all over the back yard, I gave up. They sleep on straw.

The other day Rolli was in the apartment when I had to leave and go to work. I went out and told her owner that I would leave the door open so that she could go in and out, in the process affording my own dog a more interesting day.

That thought didn't last long. A few minutes later she came into the living room where I was at the computer and I heard Rip! Rip! I looked up and there she had one of my books on the floor, holding it down with one foot and her jaws ripping out page after page.

I closed the door.

Ariel had quite a day today. My wife has been wanting to start doing obedience trials with her -- has been working with her steadily this year toward that goal. Today was Ariel's first obedience trial and she came away with High In Trial -- outscored every other dog!

What's more, though my wife and I aren't very fond of the comformation ring, or the whole conformation game, for that matter, we have thought about trying out Breeze as a learning experience. After all, there's years of obedience and agility trials ahead of the boy. We thought we might try to title him on both sides of the name.

Anyway, as a learning experience my wife showed Ariel in the conformation ring and walked away with Best of Breed.

And because she won Best of Breed and High In Trial in the same event, Ariel won what's called "Total Dog" -- BIG ribbon.

Fun day!

I had a dog like that. She knew darned well she was to pick nothing off the street. Anyway, she'd got about 3/4 block ahead and was waiting for me at the corner--she wasn't allowed to cross alone. In her mouth was a bone. My single utterance was "WHAT?" She kept looking me in the eyes, opened her mouth and allowed the bone to fall to the ground. She was quite the character.

My pit bull has a routine that isn't meant to snub, it's meant to show that she's on top of things, but a human might misinterpret it the first time they see it. When I open the back door to join the dogs outside she perks up her ears and races to the back of the back yard and barks through the cyclone fence to the southwest. I think she's warning off the old rottweiler two doors up to stay away. Or maybe scolding their cats. Anyway, when she finishes this brisk task then she comes over to have me put on the leash or whatever I was going to do that requires her presence. (I haven't had the heart to tell her that what she's doing amounts to a workman leaning on his shovel and then quickly bending his back to the work when he sees the boss enter the work site.)

The new owner of the building I live in is renovating right now and he brings his four-month old Malamute pup with him. As soon as they get here in the mornings Rolli runs down the stairs to my apartment and moans at the door. My 6 year old Cairn is mightily offended at the pup's antics but I am enjoying her a lot.It's been a long time since I was around a pup.
