I enjoyed performing in both the Stork[Good acoustics]and the Dalton Arms,if the village hall could be made available,this would be a good
alternative for concerts,etc.,when weather is inclement.
unfortunately because of performing committments,Ionly caught one of Roy Palmers talks,however his talk on Samuel Plimsoll,was Interesting, Entertaining and Informative and was the highlight of the festival, as far as I was concerned.

It was excellent,The only gig that I have ever arrived to, by way of canal boat,
the audience for Dick Miles,in the Paddy West performance tent at 11am in the morning was considerable.
O and Derby ram and Derby ewe performed good sets,as did all the performers,well done David,Val and the production team.

Am glad the marquee wasn't wholey despised - to be honest I have to admit I was biased against it - but that was probably due to me having to stand in the draft for most of the weekend!!
The music was - as always - awesome!

It was great! It had a wonderful carnival atmosphere with Punch & Judy and the Inner State Theatre group who, when we passed by munching on our dish of chips, had gathered a substantial audience around them. There was kipper smoking (they were gorgeous), coracle building, an RSPB stand that had a large 'bird' jigsaw for kids (and the not-so-young kids)and the Shanty Tent (open fronted and not PA'd) was always a great crowd puller. All this against a back-drop of narrow and broad-beamed canal boats, yachts and other vessels of various shapes and sizes in a very pretty harbour.

The pubs were welcoming, the ale was good and the singing from all the artists was of a very high standard.

Well done to all concerned.

It was a brilliant weekend as always - excellent artists, wonderful singing, great organisation, loads of people wandering about soaking up the atmosphere, and lovely weather thrown in. And the whole community at Glasson seemed to enjoy and support the event, which is great. It's great to see so many friends there (many of who will be at Cyril's event next weekend I believe)- I'm just looking forward to next year now!

Yes - a really smashing festival. The weather helped - it brought out a lot of people new to maritime music - and the atmosphere was great, with the pubs really welcoming, and quiet enough to sing ballads in, as well as shanties. And actually, I rather liked the marquee. The p.a. was good and the heater in the bar area worked a treat. Audience for Four 'n' Aft at 11am on Saturday in the marquee was quite substantial, which has to be a good sign. I think David, Val and company have done a great job. Thank you.

Yeah - Huzzahs all round for really great achievement!
Despite the logistical problems and that abominable marquee (an experiment which I am assured will NOT be repeated) the organisers and production team pulled it off once more - the artists were superb and the venue especially good becuase of the glorious weather. The "Last Night Do" will go down in the annals of history as a true blitz spirit affair!!
Thankyou to Everybody - Artists, Organisers and Audience for a truly memorable weekend.
God Willing the festival will return next year with more support from the powers that be!!

We could only manage Monday.

Despite most of the singers having performed since Friday night they were in excellent voice. Enjoyed everyone we saw, Lou Killen was brilliant, but so was Hughie Jones, Derek Gifford, Stormalong John and Geogg Higginbottom and all the rest.

Imagine the scene Stork Inn, small cosy room with large fireplace, Stormalong John (all six I think) in the fireplace singing at full volume. The wall of sound was amazing, like a hard rock concert, and all with the the human voice x 6 and the odd concertina here and there.

The venues -- Stork and Dalton were just big enough on Monday, you had to wait one or two songs for a seat.

If only we had been able to make more of the weekend.

Congratulations to the organisers, superb performers in a great setting; what more could you ask for.

I can tell you it was as fantastic as ever - it might even have had an edge on the Lancaster Original. I mean only in the sense that it was much cosier and easier to get around. The atmosphere was terrific and every event was exteremely well supported.

Extra special performances were put in by Lou Killen (of course),
Hughie Jones, Four an' Aft, Dick Miles, Stormalong John and Richard Grainger ansd the Endeavour Shanty Men. Sylvia and I had a thoroughly
great time and are looking forward to another Easter Maritime extravaganza next year!

Can't wait now - and only a few days to go. I got in the mood by playing tracks from Johnny Collins and Three Sheets To The Wind on Oldham Community Radio tonight. The map of the whole festival site looks great - in a way I can see it being better than Lancaster perhaps - with everything so close together the atmosphere should be amazing!

Sorry, Charmian, I wasn't casting nasturtiums just pointing up the difference between the existing summer Glasson Festival and the new (smaller than Lancaster, but perfectly formed?!) spring Maritime one. I'm sure it'll be great, as previous Lancaster Maritime jaunts have been.... and with the added attraction of Bond's ice cream.

Sorry about that, I wondered why it said camping for the Friday and Sat. when the lady that I contacted said there wasn't any camping! Senior moment, just didn't look at the dates!!

I hear that the Lancater Pace-eggers are thinking of performing in Lancaster early on the Saturday and then moving to Glasson Dock later in the morning so perhaps they will take some passing audience members in tow.

Glasson Festival is a different event that takes place each summer and doesn't normally have maritime events. The mini-Maritime festival (at Glasson) is new for this year following the demise of the Lancaster Maritime Festival.

That link takes you to a general listing for the festival - the event doesn't have a dedicated website. If you read the listing though, it gives contact info for further details. If you have specific queries, contact the people there - not everything is set in stone yet, though. I understand that an interim newsletter will be sent out to the mailing list very soon - if you leave your details and get put on the mailing list, you will get a copy sent in the post. The full programme usually comes out about a week / 10 days before the event. For accommodation enquiries, the Tourist information Centre number is also on that listing - the event does not run a festival campsite but there are sites in the area.

I just wish that the council would pledge to continue supporting the festival long-term. I'm not sure how long I can carry on attending the "Last Ever Maritime Festival" - its emotionally exhausting!

Yes - had it not been for the valiant efforts of organisers Dave and Val (and others, of course), last year's festival would not have happened... 2004 was officially supposed to be the last.

Such a shame - it was originally started as the Council's attempt to give tourism a boost...

Funnily enough, rather than being a stealth attempt to kill off the festival, the move to Glasson is a desperate attempt to save it!
As well as the pubs there will be a marquee set up for performances and street theatre in a "For Easter Weekend Only" Canalside Village.
The newly named "Lancaster District Maritime Festival" will still provide lovers of all things nautical with the worlds largest gathering of sea-song and shanty singers and the team who organise this brilliant event will be doing their all to ensure that the festival runs as smoothly and successfully as possible - in circumstances which they themselves know to be less ideal.
The political situation surrounding this festival is bizarre and it remains to be seen what effect the move will have on the Lancaster Quayside businesses not to mention the Maritime Museum...

Local paper, the Lancaster Guardian, states that this year's Easter Maritime festival will be based at Glasson Dock so as to link in with Liverpool's maritime year.

How does that work? In the place of four pub bars and two hotel rooms and two rooms in the Maritime Museum we would have just two pubs.

And does anyone think that the Liverpool festival desperately needs help from Lancaster?

Sounds like another stealth atempt to kill off the festival.
