Interesting - the usual YouTube buffering problems, Bowie looks really old, it is not the original recording, and he is not playing the guitar he used on the original recording, which was a Hagstrom BJ12 - the difference is both visible and audible.

Definitely the right era (the red hair/shaved eyebrows period), if not the exact recording. I can't quite make out the type of guitar, and the sound isn't matched to the video.

From the comments ([sic]): "And even tho hes english it doesnt give him a excuse to have a mullet..." We didn't call those haircuts 'mullets', but the comment is still funny.

I've got dial-up too. Click on it, hit pause and go knit an afghan. When it's done, you can click 'play' and watch the whole thing.

Here's a beautiful clip of Bowie in 1973 doing "Life On Mars?"

Life On Mars?

"Definitely the right era (the red hair/shaved eyebrows period)" said Jeri
But it is NOT the right era Space Oddity was 1969 and Bowie had blonde permed hair at that time. He did re-record a crap version in 1972 but it's not that either.

The original also features Kieth Christmas on acoustic guitar and Bowie playing a stylophone along with Paul Buckmaster's strings.

Listening again it IS the 1969 recording with a 1972 bowie miming over it!

Here is an even earlier version Space Oddity
This is before he permed his hair.

I saw him at the beckenham arts lab festival in 1969. I sat next to him on the grass and chatted about music. he was a nice bloke they were selling his brand new single "space oddity" at a discount 5/- (five shillings)

Cool. I think he was the single most creative and innovative musician around in the late 60's-mid 70's. He did amazing stuff.

Sadly though, "Space Oddity" was none of the above but simply a tepid piece of chipmunk dung.
