I find this song credited to David Whiffen and it was listed on BMI. BMI sends me to SOCAN which does not appear to have a listing, I'm planning to cover this song on an album and need to find the copyright holder? any ideas?

Not quite an "origin" but the closest heading I could see.

It was David Whiffen who wrote it, and I think he was Canadian. That would explain the SOCAN listing. Tom Rush covered it, which would probably explain the BMI thing. If you're in the US you could try the Harry Fox Agency website. These days a mechanical license is easy to get and you would not necessarily have to find Mr. Whiffen to record it.

David Whiffen, if my memory serves me well, was a member of Neil Young's associates Crazy Horse.

Like so many other writers songs, this was brought to many peoples attention by Tom Rush. It appeared as lead track on his first CBS album "Tom Rush". This track also appeared on one of the eally CBS compilations of the late sixties early seventies, "Fill your Head with Rock", "Rock Machine I Love You" etc.

It gets covered now and again, so good luck with yours.

John

Yes, it was Trevor Veitch playing on those Tom Rush albums. David Bromberg did that nice dobro work on "Drivin' Wheel."

It definitely is a Dave Wiffen tune. It is on a couple of his cd's. He lives in Ottawa, Ontario and last I heard is still making music. Haven't been in touch with him for years now.
