This song came to mind while replying to a recent (unconnected) thread.

If anyone has the chords to the traditional way of singing / playing - I would be most gtateful.

Thanks

Muttley

I had forgotten all about this one until I saw your Thread,Muttley.
I vividly remember doing it from "Singing Together" circa 1972.Some U.K. 'Catters may still have the songbook for that one.

Does anyone have the words? I remember my mother singing this one to me when I was knee high to a knee.

It's in Roy Palmer's book 'Songs of the Midlands' under the title 'Perry Merry Winkle Domone', and Martyn Wyndham-Read recorded it on 'Harry the Hawker is Dead' as 'Perry Merry Winkle Domine'.

Captain Ginger: Here are the words as I learned them. I'll PM this to you as well

THE RIDDLE SONG

"I had four brothers, across the sea,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
And each they sent present to me,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
Petrum, partrum, paradisi tempore,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini.

The first sent a cherry which had no stone,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
The second sent a chicken which had no bone,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
Petrum, partrum, paradisi tempore,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
The third sent a blanket which had no thread,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
The fourth sent a book which no man had read
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
Petrum, partrum, paradisi tempore,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini.

How can there be a cherry which has no stone?
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
How can there be a chicken which has no bones?
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
Petrum, partrum, paradisi tempore,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
How can there be a blanket without any thread?
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
How can there be a book which no man has read?
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
Petrum, partrum, paradisi tempore,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini.

The cherry when it's blooming, it has no stone,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
The chicken in the egg it has no bones
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
Petrum, partrum, paradisi tempore,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
The blanket on the sheep's back it has no thread
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
The book, in the press, no man has read
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini,
Petrum, partrum, paradisi tempore,
Peri Meri Dixi   Domini.

Now, does anyone have the chords???

Muttley

did anyone ever find the chords for this? I notice on the version I listened to that the chords go up (or down) a tone each verse...

Would be nice to find some!

THIS VERSION is sung beautifully by the 3-part a capella harmony group White Raven (if you run a trad club and they ever approach you, BOOK THEM!!!) but this clickie gives only the words. However, the chords are just the basic I-IV-V sort of progression (if you're in the key of C, that would be C-F-G).

Different melody HERE and ALSO HERE but again, no chords.

Don't know how helpful these are, because the White Raven version (the only one I know) has a different melody. a simple but lovely one.

Anyway, try Googling Peri Meri DICTUM domini/domine with assorted spellings. It must be out there somewhere -
