Subject: Lyr Req: Fudge, Fudge Call The Judge
From: Azizi

Do any folks here know any children's rhymes about mom {or a girl} having a baby and wrapping that baby in tissue {or toilet} paper and throwing him or her away?

I've collected a number of rhymes like that. Many of these rhymes start with the line "fudge fudge call the judge". However, this post in the Ten Little Indians Mudcat thread causes me to wonder whether this wrapping someone unwanted up and throwing him or her away is more common in rhymes than I had thought:

Subject: RE: req/add: 10 Little Indians
From: GUEST,gretasmom - PM
Date: 17 Feb 07 - 08:14 PM

This is what I remember:

One little, two little, three little Indians
Four little, five little, six little Indians
Seven little, eight little, nine little Indians
Ten little Indian boys.

Ten little, nine little, eight little Indians
Seven little, six little, five little Indians
Four little, three little, two little Indians
One little Indian boy.

Wrap him up in tissue paper, throw 'em down the river
Wrap him up in tissue paper, throw 'em down the river
Wrap him up in tissue paper, throw 'em down the river
No more Indian boys!

Sadly enough, I remember singing that as a class, led by our teacher, in kindergarten (of course that was in '82).

In the next couple of posts, I'll share examples of the rhymes I've found that have these lines.

For the record, I don't remember this rhyme from my childhood and I've not heard any children recite it in my adopted home town of Pittsburgh, Pa [though there is a rhyme in this 'family' from Pittsburgh, PA that another Mudcatter, LadyJean, posted on a previous Mudcat thread.

Thanks in advance for posting the words to the rhymes that you remember.

Btw, when you post your example, I'd appreciate it if you would also add demographical information such as Where you learned this rhyme
[country, city, state, or province] and When you learned it [such as late 1950s; 1960s; mid 1980s]. Also, it would also be interesting if you'd indicate What category of rhyme your example is, if you can recall...[such as handclap rhyme, jumprope rhyme].

And all that being said, on with the thread!

From my eleven-year-old daughter come these jump rope rhymes. She says they don't sing them, they are more of a chant than a song. They do this at school during recess.

....
Fudge, fudge, call the judge, (Sally's*) having a baby.
Wrap it up in toilet paper, send it down the elevator,
What shall it be?
Boy, girl, twins, triplets, boy, girl, twins, triplets...
(repeat until jumper misses)
*substitute jumper's name

Here's two examples from http://blog.oftheoctopuses.com/000518.php

These examples are used with permission of that blog's members.

For purposes of this thread, I'm going to label them "Example #1, Example #2 etc...

Example #1
the jump rope song goes like this.......................

fudge, fudge!
call the judge!

A girl?
Twins or aliens?
A boy?
A girl?
Twins or aliens?
[Jumprope game. Player jumps until they mess up. Whatever they land on is what they have.]

I think that 'grudge' maybe a typo. But it may not be..

Here's two more excerpts from previous Mudcat threads:

Example #3

Subject: RE: I'm Rubber . You're Glue: Children's Rhymes
From: Barbara - PM
Date: 26 May 05 - 10:11 PM

Growing up in suburban Detroit in the fifties, many of the ones you post are familiar to me.

....

And,
Oh fudge, oh joy
Momma's got a baby boy
Wrap him up in tissue paper
Put him in the 'frigerator.

Blessings,
Barbara

Example #4
Two African American girls behind me on the 86B bus [Pittsburgh, PA} were happily chanting:
Oh My! Don't Cry! Mommy's having a baby!
Daddy's going crazy!
If it's a boy I'll give it a toy!
And if it's a girl! I'll give it a curl!
wrap it up in toilet paper! send it down the escalator.

It was accompanied with clapping and gestures. There was also some discussion of wrapping babies in toilet paper, the conclusion being that this would not be a good idea.

In Michigan City, Indiana, in the late 50's at our Catholic grade school we jumped rope to:

Fudge, Fudge, Call the Judge
Momma's got a newborn baby
It isn't a girl
It isn't a boy
It's just an ordinary baby

Wrap it up in tissue paper
Send it down the elevator
First floor-push
Second floor-Push
Third floor- Kick 'em out out the door
Momma doesn't want that baby anymore

We played a ball bouncing game to this.
Fudge Fudge call the judge
Momma's having a baby
It isn't a boy; it isn't a girl
It's just a plain old baby.
Wrap it up in tissue paper.
Send it down the escalator.
How many pounds did the baby weigh?
Close your eyes and I shall say:
(with eyes closed and bouncing ball under leg)
One
two
Three...until you miss.

I wonder if this has any connection to "Here come de judge!"—the catchphrase used by Dewey "Pigmeat" Markham and later taken up by Sammy Davis, Jr. on "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In."

As I recall, it was recited rhythmically:

Heah come de judge!
Heah come de judge!
O'der in de cou't!
Heah come de judge!

Jim Dixon, I'm not sure if this children's rhyme is related in any way to the "Here come the judge" routine. However, the "fudge fudge" phrase certainly reminds me of that routine.

It just so happens that I recently published a post about that rhyme on my blog. A few examples found on this thread & a video are included in that post. The web address for that blog post is http://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2011/12/fudge-fudge-call-judge-twins-triplets.html

Best wishes,

Azizi Powell

Back in the 50s in Flint, MI. We chanted while jumping rope:
Fudge, fudge. Call the judge.
Mama's gonna have a new born baby.
Wrap it up in tissue paper.
Send it down the elevator.
First floor - miss.
Second floor - miss.
Third floor - kick it out the door. (kicking motion)
That's the end of the baby (Run out from swinging rope)

wrap it up in toilet paper
send it down the escalator
what is it going to be?
Boy
Girl
Triplets...
(Continue singing this in a chanting pattern until jumper messes up,whatever one you were saying when she messed up, on boy girl triplets is what the girl has)

I think this was from Chicago (late 50's) where my sisters were little but it might be from Saint Louis (early 60's) where I was little, but I don't think so. I don't remember jumping rope to it, I remember hearing my sisters singing it to me and saying it was a jumprope song. It is almost identical to Guest, Mary's, above, late 50's Michigan. We sang it Hudge, Fudge, which might be the way it was sung and might be us from being half Hungarian, Hogy vagy (pronounced roughly hodge fudge if you kind of "y" instead of "g" the end of each word.

Hudge, Fudge, Call the Judge
Mama got a newborn baby
Not a boy, not a girl,
Just an ordinary baby

Wrap it up in tissue paper
Send it down the elevator
First floor-stop
Second floor-stop
Third floor- shut the door
Momma don't want the baby no more

I grew up in northern New Jersey in the 60's.
For some reason today I was trying to remember this jump rope jingle.

This is what I recall:
Fudge, fudge, call the judge
Mama's got a new born baby
Papa's going crazy
It's not a boy
It's not a girl
It's just an ordinary baby
Wrap it up in tissue paper
Send it down the elevator
1st floor stop (the jumping stopped)
2nd floor miss (you'd deliberately miss)
3rd floor turn around
4th floor touch the ground
5th floor get out (you'd jump out)
