John Renbourne is interviewed in the current issue of Acoustic Guitar (Magazine).
He talks at length about the history of British fingerpicking styles & provides a tutorial on his own techniques (Based around "South Wind")
He also talks about his own influences & his approach to song arrangement.
It's fingerpickin' good.
(Sorry,couldn't resist that one)

The one time I saw him live he opened for Pierre Bensusan. That was a stellar show. Two masters in their prime.

To paraphrase Wesley, "the one time I saw him live it was a stellar show, a master in his prime", and that was only 6 years ago. He was very gracious at the preceding workshop and loads of fun at the pub after the show where he really seemed to enjoy telling tales from the road, guitar geek craziness, and getting to know the locals. He made a huge impression on us.

Peace, Mooh.

A story he told that I enjoyed was when he was in the States and opened for Doc Watson. He played a song in the Doc's repertoire, and only realised it after doing it. Feeling embarrassed at having trodden on the Doc's toes, he apologised to DW, who replied: "That's OK son, I didn't recognise it anyway" :-)

(Words may not be 100% correct but that was th gist of JR's tale).

I went to see him when I was still at school !! He was appearing in the village of Bray, near Maidenhead. The year was 1962 or 63 !!!

Can never understand why JR doesn't seem to have quite the same 'legendary' tag as Jansch & Graham; maybe he's just never been 'angsty' enough? Odd..

I'm looking forward to seeing him at the Fareham & Gosport Easter Festival in Hampshire on Thursday 5th April when he's appearing with Robin Williamson.

See details at www.gosportfestival.co.uk

Looks like John and Robin are doing several Spring dates together this year. A fine combination.
