Does anyone have the lyrics to this song? Hobie Kytre is a Pacific Northwest person if that's any help.

Subject: Lyr Req: Don't Go Down To That Trestle
From: Genie
Date: 03 Apr 09 - 09:40 PM

There's a song I first heard from Portland's Jinx Davis (who, sad to say, left us prematurely a couple years ago) and later from some other Portland folkies but don't know the title of or who wrote it.

The chorus goes:

Don't go down to that trestle,
I don't want you playing there.
The beams are all rotten
And it's too high in the air.
_________________________

__________________________
So down to that trestle I forbid you to go.

Anyone have the full lyrics, title, and author?

I think I just figured out the title.

The chorus goes:

Don't go down to that trestle,
I don't want you playing there.
The beams are all rotten
And it's too high in the air.
They don't call it "Dead Man's Drop"
For nothing, you know,
So down to that trestle I forbid you to go.

I think the title is Dead Man's Drop.

I didn't find it by searching for "trestle," but maybe we already have it under "Dead Man's Drop."

No luck finding it by that title here either, so I hope someone has the full lyrics and songwriter credits.

DEAD KIDS DROP is sung by Hobe Kytr and Dave Berge on their album "Dog Salmon and Rutabagas." Some other songs on that album are ALMOST WALK FROM SHORE TO SHORE, FISHERMAN'S LIFE, and OREGON-AMERICAN. This information comes from playlists at KBOO Community Radio, Portland, Oregon.

I had a nice recording of Blue Northern (Bill Murlin, Meryle Korn, &, I think, Gordy Euler) doing this song at the 2008 Singtime Frolics, but the video is on the dead hard drive from that old laptop. I may sometime be able to retrieve it, but I'm not holding my breath.

It's a great song.

This is a test. Hobe Kytr is my uncle and I have a copy of Dog Salmon and Rutabagas. Don't know if anyone is monitoring this thread, but I can certainly supply the lyrics

Here's my transcription from Hobie Kytr's cassette DOG SALMON.
Jinx Davis mostly sang his own very wonderful songs about Oregon,
but he liked this one of Hobie's. The tape is also by Dave Berge,
but isn't clear if he helped write this one.

DEAD KID'S DROP
Hobe Kytr (and Dave Berge?)

How well I remember those games that we did play
On that old rotten trestle by the way.
There was games of 'double dare you' and 'plenty hell to pay'
One more time we forgot what Momma did say:

(Chorus):
Don't go down to that trestle, I don't want you playing there.
The beams are all rotten and it's too high in the air.
They don't call it 'dead kid's drop' for nothing, you know,
So down to that trestle I forbid you to go.

Oh, me and Dan and Jake-o we was a lively crew
Not to mention little Sandy, pretty and hadue (?)
We'd race across the canyon, do her back again,
Run stark wild naked in the pouring rain.

Chorus

And then there was that time my foot slipped between the ties--
I was caught in the act, ain't no use to telling lies.
They ran to get by daddy and pretty soon it led
To that slim willow switch out behind the tool shed.

Chorus

Well that trestle's still standing, but some the worse for wear,
And I wouldn't run across on a quadruple dare.
When I look back on those days that I did
You know it scared me enough back when I was a kid.

Chorus
