The Chocolate Drops will be the guest artists this year at the Alaska Folk Festival (April 9-16).

I have heard a CD by them and have done some reading but I haven't met anyone who has heard them.

Does anyone here know them? Yourimpressions?

They were fantastic in an interview on npr, recently. See the short-lived thread on them: HERE.

Go see them, Ebbie. They are local to my area, and they are really good. I'm also pretty sure many members of FSGW have seen them play in the DC area--I think I remember seeing Rita post that she saw them. You might pm her or Bill D.

It took me awhile to find it, but there is also information in the thread Black Stringband Revival.

I hope somebody combines these two threads. Katmeluv?

Janie, I was wondering if you might know them. I listened to the YouTube link that Bill D posted and I liked them very much. I'm glad we in Juneau got them.

Just came from a meeting this week where folks talked about them performing last summer at the Farmer's Market here, and they were a HUGE hit. I haven't heard them live, but their recordings are wonderful.

I think they have a myspace!

We have had two members of the Carolina Chocolate Drops at our concert series here in Richmond, Virginia - Dom Flemons and Rhiannon Giddens. They are wonderful - especially Rhiannon who has a drop dead gorgeous voice. Here's a link to her website and from there you can get to the Chocolate Drops http://www.rhisong.com

Oh my goodness Ebbie are you in for a treat. Tell everyone you know about this group. The combination of energy and enthusiam, musical knowledge, old and rare American and African instruments, varied repertoire, and sheer talent is hard to beat.

I haven't heard the entire group, but I've heard Rhiannon and Dom together and individually. Fantastic.

I met Rhiannon the first year she was a student at Augusta Heritage Vocal Week. The next year she was back -- as a teacher, with Dom as an accomplice :-), teaching African-American string band music.

Rhiannon has an exquisite voice that she can use well in just about any genre that interests her, but more than that she has a genuine feel for her songs and a talent for vocal rendition that puts her right in the middle of whatever tradition she is singing from, if you see what I mean.

Dom just has to be seen and heard to be believed. Multi talented, vocally and instrumentally. Their set in the final Vocal Week concert was as varied, high-energy, moving, gorgeous and fascinating as anything I heard at VW last year.

Well as you can probably tell I'm a fan. Adding their fiddler can only increase the synergy. Let us know what you think.

Rita
