We've just been working on The Rhythm of Life - the original cynical version, this is England after all - in a choir I belong to. We sang it in a concert the other day and it went down a bomb. Great fun to sing, with te different parts singing against each other.

One interesting difference and a question arising from it - we had the seventh line as
"Hit the road, Daddy. Leave your trouble and strife" - a phrase that is rhyming slang for "wife". And the version given here has "Hit the road, Daddy. Leave your common-law wife."

So is this a case of an American use of rhyming slang, or a change made here in England?

Does anyone know the welsh lyrics Ysgol Glanaethwy were singing on Last Choir Standing? Or all the lyrics in welsh? I remember doing it in primary school, we were doing the chorus with our year 0 teacher's choir, but i don't know what the verses are. If anyone does know the welsh words please please put them here, thank you :)

Interesting. I remember watching Sweet Charity very well, but didn't remember this song at all until this thread began. So, I watched the movie again, and I thought the song just didn't fit the rest of the play, and that it was a totally forgettable song. It's a nice attempt at making fun of shallow spirituality, but nothing really inspiring.

But apparently it strikes a chord with a lot of people, because the thread has lived forever. I wonder if they find it inspiring. Maybe I shouldn't rain on the parade of those who love this song.

I am just learning this fantastic song.. and am honoured to say, I'll be singing it with other members of the just formed Dundee Proms Chorus, for the Dundee Last Night of the Proms 2010! The sheet music for the choral version is readily available at places like Sheet Music Plus - or download form Sheet Music Direct. My only experience with the song is seeing it in the movie Sweet Charity, where it sounds intentionally corny and stupid. I think of this as a novelty comedy piece, and can't imagine it as a choral performance.

There must be something to it, though - this thread has been kept alive forever by people who really seem to love the song.

oops, I got so caught up thinking what the names of the girls tones are called that I forgot to add my statement.

I was trying to add that we sang a complex version that hand 5 separate groups within the choir singing different lines. All together it sounded beautiful. I'd rly like to know if anyone had sang this version or seen a copy of it somewhere?

I sang this song too, in my performing choir in Melbourned Australia about 15 years ago.

I too didnt know it was from Sweet Charity until today and I like the choir version better than the original too.

We had a more complex version of this again. It had more parts repeated and was quite long. It also had 5 different groups singing at once. I can't believe that after being so heavily involved in the choir for 3-4 years, performing overseas, training to almost military regimes during 'camps' which were really 14 hours per day of training (which I dreaded) I have forgotten so much!!!. I can't even remember what the 'parts' are called when you talk about each 'group' singing a different line from the sheet music and also what these 'groups' are called. I know I was one of the 2 soprano groups. I read the second top line of music which was equally as high pitched as the other soprano group. There was another line for the some pitch I can't remember and one line for altos. Being 5 lines all up. I also can't remember if alto is the lowest pitch for young girls and whether the other 'group' which I can't remember the name of is higher or lower than altos. How sad am I LOL

I can't stand the "sanitised" (Politically Correct) version of this song - it's original or nothing for me! Why do people do this to songs ... we sang the original version in Grade 6 and now, as an adult, our chorus is doing the sanitised version so as to not offend anyone. What a lot of BS!!!

I really dont like the real version. The "daddy in San Francisco" version. But, I know this will sound lame. Just done it in concert three times in the last two weekends, We have been doing it that long now I know the whole thing without music.
We sing almost exactly what is stated in the last posting above, except third line is "spread" not speed and the odd sp. We also Canadianize the towns, "Go and spread the gospel in Vancouver, take a walkie talkie to Calgary, all the way yo Kingston then to Moncton, even shout it lodly from sea to sea"

Snap! When I was with Cantorion Creigiau (the mixed choir from the village of Creigiau, about eight miles north-west of Cardiff) we sang The Rhythym Of Life and Adiemus as well. The Rhythm Of Life really boiled my kettle, but our own local favourite was Adiemus, by the visionary composer Karl Jenkins, an ex-pupil of Gowerton Comprehensive School in the same county.

I love Karl's compositions, including the piece he was commissioned to write for the opening of the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. His work has been recorded for several CDs.

our choir sang that version in a competition about a month ago. You won't have heard of us we are an english school choir. We sing mainly gospel music 'Halleluja' but we do sing a lot of other stuff. Unfortunately our condctor has bought a high school musical medly which we are going to learn after our next comp., a week on friday!!!
We sang 'Adiemus' aswell but 'Rhythmn of Life' is my favourite by far.

I've been looking forever for recordings/lyrics of 2 songs that I sang in a chorus when I was younger.

Rhythm Of Life was one of them, and I just found it on bearshare, and the other one was called Dance Dance Dance and this is the closest I could find to being the lyrics of the entire song

we sang this in high school chorus also
we sung it for a competition this song got us 2nd place out of 80 choir's in our division..
we sang the version with the word "neighbor" not daddy.

I have recently been given a copy of this from my neighbour, who played it incessantly to me to get himself through a nasty divorce and the death of his father. I play it all the time now to pick myself up on bad days, being recently seperated myself.

Been singing this song for years and it has always been a favourite.   For a time it was the most popular choral piece in the UK.   My choir - The Glasgow Phoenix Choir - recorded it in 1999 and it is on "Titanic - Classic Pop Collection" CDITV 658 by ScotDisc.   Part of it can be heard on website www.phoenixchoir.org under "recordings".

I am in the production of Sweet Charity at college. (Oldham College, Manchester Uk). I have got the part of Daddy Brubeck who is the guy who sings this song with his 2 assistants and an ensemble chorus. I have never heard the lyrics stated above as I have known this song for ages and always known them to be

is the version our choir did(at least the cover looks like the same one) which is the words posted by Guest above,plus all the other ones Guest did not remember.
Being in Canada we changed the place names to Canadian content.
"Go and spread the Gospel in Vancouver, take a Walky -Talky to Calgary, all the way to Kingston then to Moncton, even shout it loudly from sea to sea" it then goes on to a Dooby Dooby bit, with different parts doing different Doobies. A local choral group may have a copy you could borrow, I know our choir rents out music to other choral groups.

The version that 'GUEST' posted is the same version I learned almost twenty years ago, when I was singing with the Alaska Children's Choir up in Anchorage, AK. If I'm correct, this song was done by Sammy Davis, Jr. in the movie version of Sweet Charity, playing a hip clergyman holding services in a parking garage. Everyone in the congregation was wearing bell bottom pants. Interesting scene, but it sure made the film look dated.
