I'm interested in acquiring more recordings of...solo? Acapella? Unaccompanied? singers from the US. I thought about writing "Appalachia" there too but I'd be keen to hear solo singing from other parts of the country as well. Nothing against guitars, I'm just not in the mood! I've downloaded an awful lot of singing from various online websites - contact me privately if you're interested. I've also got a mountain of Irish traditional music - it'd take about two years to listen to it all! - and lots of Old Time stuff as well.
I'm buying heaps of CDs while I'm at it - two Sheila Kay Adams in the mail, also Texas Gladden. Also the Far in the Mountains thing from MT. Any more recommendations along those lines? I've a few of the old Folkways records, Horton Barker and some of the compilations. I came across the "Living Singers" thread, which lists a kajillion singers - but how do you tell who has a record for sale!?!?

Jean Redpath has some beautiful acapella songs.

Paddy Graber - The Craic Was Great - all unaccompanied songs, that's the only way he sings.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

Frank and Anne Warner made field recordings of mainly unaccompanied singers in the 1940s and 50s - people in rural parts of North Carolina, New York, New Hampshire and a few Midwestern locations. The originals are at the Library of Congress in Washington DC, but their son, Jeff Warner, brought out 2 CDs of this material in 2000. Being field recordings, it's rough stuff, but it's also the Real Deal!
Go to his website, www.jeffwarner.com, and then go to the "sales" link to get more info. If you want an mp3 of one of the songs (to see what you're getting into!), we can get you that.
Write to Jeff through his website - tell him Barbara sent you.

Solo means on their own.

A solo singer can be unaccompanied or accompanied. Unaccompanied singers can be solo or duo or whatever.
