Subject: Have you heard of Paul Thorn? From: Steve Latimer Date: 25 Mar 99 - 05:09 PM Okay, so I haven't renounced my rock days. Last night I went to see Jeff Beck at Toronto's Massey Hall. I had never heard of Paul Thorn, the opening act. I was a little late arriving and was surprised to see a lone performer with an acoustic guitar on stage. He was just finishing a story as I was being seated. The three songs that I heard were very funny, as was the dialogue between them. The songs were Burn Down the Trailer Park, Joanie(?) the Jehovah's Witness Stripper, and Two Dogs in Heat. He reminded me of a young, southern Arlo Guthrie with his ability to put humourous material to music. I'm sorry that I didn't see his whole set. If you get a chance to see him go. I'd be interested in hearing the thoughts of anyone else who has seen him or heard his CD. Steve Latimer |

Subject: RE: Have you heard of Paul Thorn From: katlaughing Date: 25 Mar 99 - 06:53 PM Hi, No, I hadn't heard of him, but went looking after reading your thread. Found his homepage at www.midsouth.com/pthorn/ with some audio available. Said one of his albums, A Heart With a 4 wheel drive" was the soundtrack to Keifer Sutherland's movie, Truth or Consequences. Found another of a review which had these words in it: On "A Heart With A Four Wheel Drive," Thorn sings, "Every time you crank me up you take me down a dead-end street / You hitch a ride just long enough to watch me overheat / I got tears all over my windshield / from the rain pouring out of my eyes / there's only one way out of here / I need a heart with a four wheel drive." Thanks! I enjoyed his 800 pound Jesus, too! katlaf |

Subject: RE: Have you heard of Paul Thorn From: Steve Latimer Date: 26 Mar 99 - 12:05 PM Katlaughing, As I said, I only heard the three songs, I also checked out his site, but I don't have a sound card. Did you see the part about him being a former pro boxer? He fought Roberto Duran in '87. There aren't too many people who can consider trying to make it as a solo folk act as an upward career move, but I think he certainly can. I'm going to get his CD. Steve |

Subject: RE: Have you heard of Paul Thorn From: katlaughing Date: 26 Mar 99 - 12:28 PM Steve L. yea I saw that boxing mug. You're right. I couldn't decide if his god sentiments were tongue in cheek or for real until I read his who I love. Still not sure when I listened to 800 lb Jesus. These days I prefer my music sans religion so I'm gonna pass on the cd. I do like his voice, though. Thanks for bringing him up. kat |

Subject: RE: Have you heard of Paul Thorn From: Steve Latimer Date: 29 Mar 99 - 02:54 PM Katlaughing, Apparently his father was a minister, I get a sense that any religious references he may have might a strange twist to them. I am also of the opinion that preaching should be confined to churches. I haven't heard 800 lb Jesus yet (no bloody sound card), but I have to think it must be a little twisted. I am still going to get the CD, although there are several ahead of it on my list, so it will take a while. Will post my thoughts when I recieve it. Steve |

Subject: Paul Thorn, From: GUEST,Mrbisok@aol Date: 15 May 00 - 06:10 PM I know and have heard very little about this jokey, pretty silly singer songwriter, Paul Thorn. I heard him on Mountain Stage about 2 years ago. They my fav. DJ played a under 2 minute song by him that I recorded, played for myself about l5 times, and shared with some teenagers. Everybody was most impressed. That song: "Temporarily Forever Mine." I'd love to talk about it. I moved this message here from another thread on the same topic. |
