Yes, folks! Extravaganza 12 is only a month away!

It starts around 2:00pm on Sunday March 25th, and will only cost you £12.00 to see Scolds Bridle, Tom Bliss and John Kirkpatrick!

Ummm... well...

A few years ago, when Pauline and John took over the running of the Open Door Folk Club, they decided to try running a mini folk festival. They decided to call it an 'Extravaganza', and the name has stuck.

At the time they took over, the club had no venue - it was run as a singaround in Pauline's front room for a few weeks!

The club then moved in to the Bull's Head, Failsworth, which had a good sized room and helpful, welcoming staff.

Unfortunately, the pub went up for sale a year or so later, and the club moved again (Railway and Linnet)... and again (Star Inn)... and again!

The current venue is the Royal Oak, Werneth. The room is small, but the publican and his staff are helpful and friendly.

Finding a suitable venue for a folk club in the Oldham area has proved very difficult...

Do you still have an all day singaround in another room?

For those who want it, yes!

If you want to see the guests, though, you'll need to be sharp or the tickets will all be gone - seats are limited!

There used to be a free concert in Werneth Park every year, what happened to it ?

My understanding is that the building they used to use was condemned and then vandalised... as I'm not a local resident I don't know the full details. Perhaps someone else knows more?

As Werneth Park is directly opposite the Royal Oak, it would have been handy...!

When I was a lad, my friends dad tought at the school just on the North side of Werneth Park. It's probably not there any more, there again I'm not in Newton Heath either.

The Werneth Park festival was all day, inside and outside. The big concert was on an open stage outside - it always seemed to be lovely weather somehow!! Inside there were other events - the In With A Chance singing and musicians competition, plus stalls. it was a pretty good weekend. I remember Clive Gregson singing one year.

Ah, you old 'uns would remember such things...!!

;o)

There's an interview on Radio Britfolk this week with Jamie Knowles which mentions the event - the interview was originally broadcast in November 2003 when Alio was presenting Sounds of Folk on BBC GMR.

On the home page Pauline's telephone number and email address (disguised for spam reasons!) are listed...

It was yesterday!

And it really was very good fun indeed. Particularly good singarounds, lots of interesting stuff (rare treats and huge laughs) plus probably the most unusual song I've ever heard - (actually, strike that 'probably')! I'm very glad I wasn't 'better off in (my) home.' (Oh and the Bridles and JK were brilliant as ever).

Thanks for having me :-)

Tom

You created a whole new branch of your fan club yesterday, Tom!

As 'Monologue John' said, your first song (about your violin) was so powerful, he thought there was no way you could keep up the momentum - but you did!

The lad done good!

Our Norman is certainly a one-off... 'You'd be far better off in a home...'!! Hah!
