Subject: Lyr Req: Oak, ash, bonny rowan tree-US version

I heard what appeared to be an American version of "Home Boys Home", or "Home Deary Home", in a session in Dublin recently.
The singer picked up the song while visiting the US. The chorus went something like:

"The oak and the ash and the bonny rowan tree
Are all growing greener in my own country"

The melody though was very different to "Home Boys Home" as we sing it, very slow and sounded Appalacian.
There are several songs in the DT with this or a similar chorus, but none of them appear to be American.

Can anyone throw any light on this song?

No, I don't recall them as being the same as "Home Boys Home", but they did have a nautical flavour. I missed most of them as I arrived as the singer was singing, but I certainly never heard this song before.

Is there an American version of Ambletown?

There are nine versions of this in the DT, including three North Country Maid's, which share the chorus, since I have always been fond of this. The six nautical ones have DT #319, so you can search for #319 to find them.

Ed Trickett did a version of "Ambletown" on his Folk Legacy LP "The Telling Takes Me Home."

Excellent!

I think Abletown may be the song--I'll try to listen to Ed Trickett's version
(or meet the singer whom I heard last week, though it's difficult getting around all the sessions that seem
to be going on in Dublin at the moment...)
