Count us in for the house party. Just hope that some of you can stay up a little bit later in the morning this year. It's amazing to see what a few more hours does to your body rhythm...it just skips a day!!!!

Just need some floor space for our bodies to lie.

Food will also come along with us. See...Sins...the mussels did not even smell. Maybe a fish dish would be nice...scallpos with haddock and cream sauce.

Thanks.

Doryman and his mate.

I'm in, and will need somewhere (hopefully quiet, unless I'm one of the noisy people) to sleep.

Tell Charley to bring something that doesn't go fuzzy as it ages, or doesn't get a chance to age. Chocolate works for me.

Tom and I will be there -- and will need a bed.

If mussels are on the menu, please make sure there's nothing else on the menu that has come into contact with them -- I'm VERY allergic! (And you really don't want to be around the reaction.)

I, for one, second Linn's post. Not because I'm allergic, but because we do not need any more concert goers rushing out the door for emergencies.

You're right there Kendall, I do love mussels, but love clams better. I remember as a kid, we wouldn't pick a mussel, rather clam a different beach or another side of a river before eating that scrap food. Times have changed. As a youngerster I remember no one would think of eating shark either or alot of the other fish finds that the commerical industry has taught some of folks to now like.
But some of us will eat anything, including lobsters.

Are you all serious about this....

How can you think this way when you all know what lobsters eat.....and if you have not pulled a trap and found "claw de toilet papier"....you can guess!!!!

I have not eaten one of these things since I was five years old and as for hotdogs.....since I was 18 and working for the USDI in Boston.

So mussels are really not that bad...they filter better and faster than clams and are actually cleaner. Ask the dorymate's wife...she published the original papers on the "red tide" in 1979 after years of research through UMass and Woods Hole.

I believe they even ate the head off of JC in Mary's back yard.

Anyway...need a bed or spot or floor space for the night.

Will bring some normal food....from me what would you expect???

Nice picture Bente....what a cute couple those guys are!!!!

Doryman and his mate.

We certainly never ate mussels when I was growing up on the Maine coast. But that was because no one told us they were good to eat. They are delicious and unlike clams apparently do not have stomachs. I'll gobble up as many as I can get my claws on.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Well, that was probably my problem -- I used to love blue mussels. Lots of garlic and wine. First time I got sick, I thought it was a bad mussel. Second time I got sick, I thought I'd gotten a bad marinated mussel. Third time...

Well, if I HAVE to be allergic to some kind of seafood, I guess I can live with a mussel allergy. If it had been oysters, or shrimp, or lobster, or scallops, it would have been very, ver\y disappointing.

I don't want to see Linn (or anybody else) yak. As for me, I used to think shellfish were disgusting. I ate a mussel cooked with tomatoes and basil at a cookout, and I ate a load more. I was blissfully unaware of the snob factor and thought they had a much better consistancy and taste than clams, so THERE.

But how do Peter's compare to Bertha's? (Undoubtedly futile attempt to return to the subject of John and the house concert.)

I'm sure this will be a spectacular house concert. We are all very fortunate to be part of a great circle of music and friendship. We got to see John and Tony and crew in Portsmouth just before Christmas and it was simply an evening that will not be forgotten. John's diversity of music and talent is truly remarkable. I hope he brings his hurdy-gurdy along with him to do a few tunes as he did in Watertown a few years ago. Really an interesting piece. Looking forward to the evening. It will be very interesting.

I wonder how (or why) the first lobster was ever eaten -- seems hard to imagine someone looking at it and thinking -- now that will be yummy boiled alive and then dipped into butter!!! But they are so good.

I'm a yes for the John Roberts concert - Tom's iffy - Mary, if you run out of space or your roof isn't fixed, we can put some folks up (as you know it is snug and comfy by the fire!!!!!). Let me know what you would like brung to eat!!! Charlie, your cheesecake has made me a dessert fan - it was fabulous.......

See you all then......

Would LOVE to try cockles! I've eaten plenty of periwinkles ("winkles"), but no opportunity to try cockles.

Actually, what I really wish, Carole, is that Tom and I could pop over for a weekend or something. Would that travel were THAT convenient!!!

We'll make it sometime, I hope!

I'll have to check if I can get the sweetened octopus candy (really -- dried and slightly sweetened) sometime. Might make a good crunchy dessert for the lobster boil!

I hated mussels because I was raised in Southern California where
they were vile--- and used as bait.

Then one night I was dining at the Black Bass Hotel in Lumberville, PA,
and the menu included a lobster dish with Prince Edward Island
mussels. Well, I wanted the lobster, but not the mussels, but tried
one--then another---then another---then the rest---then the lobster.

I've since discovered that at $2.50/lb they're the bargain of the
century.

Live and learn.

I sometimes have mussels in garlic butter for lunch - absolute heaven and very reasonably priced if you do it yourself using the basic ingredients.

The mess I cooked for the lobster boil two years ago was vile so vile smelling I had to leave the house. People (read: Jacqui) ate them. I watched in horror.

Any new additions to John's concerts?
And as to inviting anyone - I don't. If you know of someone who might enjoy a concert, feel free to ask them or direct them to Mudcat. Jacqui distributed fliers with upcoming dates at Deb Cowan's concert as an additional reminder.

Never noticed a vile smell from cooking mussels--- I boil a LOT
of water, and then only cook them lightly--- PEIs are so small
they're done in 2 minutes. Maybe that's the trick.

Carole - I'm leaving from Heathrow but the bags are so full of booty that there may not be room for all I want to take back! Sorry about that.

If mussels are cooked with butter and garlic, no added water, the only smell that comes across to me is the garlic.

You'll get an 'official' answer, I'm sure.

Until then...
Bring yourself. We usually have enough food and stuff for about twice the number of people. Optional wine, single malt, chocolate or ...well, Mary had better fill in the 'or' because she knows what food we'll be eating.

We sing while John wows us, then we sing after. You don't HAVE to sing anything, but if you do, we try for traditional, really old 'hits' or modern 'folk'. Sing what you know or nearly know.

I look forward to meeting you!

Hey, Anglo: Heave Bertha's mussels!
I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry ...but there's a nice parody awaiting.

Mary usually puts up a list of what people have offered to bring closer to the date. Being relatively close and with time to prepare food I usually try and do a main course and a desert, but cooking is a hobby for me so I just enjoy doing that. Some are not so keen on cooking and may bring bread or nibbles of one kind or another.

Mary makes sure that there is a well stocked supply of beverages but the odd bottle of wine is accepted with pleasure.

Mostly the pleasure is in bringing yourself and joining in the evening.

Looking forward to seeing you.

Maeve - bring yourself.
Deb - I have saved spots for you and yours and will be really disappointed if you don't make it.
I bought a large supply of flour tortillas on sale so I plan on filling them - ground beef, chopped onions and tomatoes, refried beans, sour cream, etc
That's a start.

John, speaking of food, are you still keen on remembering "We Have Fed Our Seas"? Not on my account of course, just that all this talk of food.
Mary, if I can make it, I won't bring salsa & chips but can you make a suggestion so as I won't happen to go astray? I'd bring susi but the Doc says no more raw fish! I do eat mussels but I don't cook the little wannabe's. So?

Sheep anyone????

It's been a cold winter on Cape Ann.

Please keep the breakfast sheep in his closet during our visit.

I have very fond memories from a year ago that I will cherish the rest of my "ewe" born days.

Barry don't let them pick on you like that....I'll bring a couple of those doughnut blowup pillows that you sit to relieve lower back pain and other pain. I'll sit with you mate.

Hi, folks,

Duane D. & I are considering driving up for the weekend & combining the concert evening w/ a short visit to my sister. Would it be helpful if we brought some cheeses & crackers, salmon cream cheese spread, tortilla chips & salsa? We don't need a place to stay, but could you PM me directions to your house from Freeport, Mary? Sounds like a good time!

We are truly looking forward to this event. The music will be wonderful, the company will be exceptional and the food wil be just perfect. Mary...we probably will arrive sometime between 4 and 5 pm.
You are always so gracious as a host. Hope everyone gives you a great big hug for your efforts to pull these events off. You are one fine lady. Thank you so very much.
Just got off the Adventure and a 1 1/2 hour meeting on the boat to go over our next tasks. 7 degrees...wind blowing in at about 30 mph off the water....damned cold when you add up the wind chill factor.
Cold enough to freeze the head of JC himself it is.
Please let John, Barry and me sit next to each other at your house...promise to be good....lie ...lie ....lie...lots of fun. Looking forward to it.

Mary -- I count about 10 more people in the list than you have beds!! Remember I have a guest bedroom, 3 miscellaneous couches and 2 rooms that my son and buddies use for a work out room and a living room (only the very bravest venture in there...I don't believe I have put so much as a toe in one of his rooms for two years.......). But we have space for extra people -- anyone welcome -- I will stay to the bitter end of the concert and can guide people to us afterwards.........

Rhubarb??? YUM!

It is like the loaves and the fishes here. Somehow the beds reproduce and everyone settles in about 4AM. In addition to three queen size beds I have a roll out cot and a futon as well as a couch. The couch is mine. Then there is the motor home which can sleep three in a pinch. And Kendall and Jacqui sometimes grab Jeri for some morning music. It always works out so I refuse to worry about it.

Anglo....pardon Jacqui's sense of well being, it must be questioned...unless.....after your sets you will sing sea songs the rest of the evening whilst sitting directly next to her for five more hours. Next thing you know someone will undoubtedly be telling you how to dress and what to eat and when, etc.....the nerve, well I never!!!!
Jacqui...I'm going to steal your knitting...unless you're making me a full body stocking....of course......headless Jesus will follow you about all evening if not a sea song is sung during Anglo's sets.....Jesus may even end up riding home with you or better still he could drive Kendall home. (A larger version of the dashboard Jesus, that is). I swear I saw him walk through Mary's house at 4:30 in the morning heading to the back yard the last time we were there. He had a glow about him when the sun came up. Well one of us had a glow....anyway.
Charlie, I actually ordered cat once...tastes like chicken or frogs legs!
Barry, bring the rubber doughnuts.
Mary....bless you for you know not what you have done.
Looking forward to a great house concert with some serious music and fine friends.
One request for the evening...Sir Patrick Spence....just an amazing piece of work this song is...really superb. And yes, Jacqui, it is a sea song.
Be well.

I didn't say NO sea songs, I just said more traditional English this time for those of us that like them. I like Sir Patrick Spence and Bringing Nelson Home. I just think that the rest of John's extensive repertoire should be aired as well.

Be careful what you threaten Peter. There is a certain Mudcatter who paid me the complement of saying that I have the heart and soul of an axe murderer. If I can pinch them from someone like that just think what I could do to you!

Tom - whatever potables you can manage!

The only time that Mary had a problem with leftovers was when ten jars of salsa came through the door and people insisted on opening their own jars.

All that salsa is not easy to dispose of, unlike the rest of the leftovers, which always get taken home while the f#$%^@g out of date salsa gets left with Mary, who doesn't like it, even when it's fresh.

I was so sad not to have some time to sit with Holly. Next time. The snow looked ominous and she had a long trip home.

The concert was great. The after concert was hilarious. I think we ended the vening with Frank Mills from "Hair".

Thank you all for good company, good food, and good music.

And thank you, Sinsull, for hosting another great evening!

We left around 11:30 pm and though it was still snowing most of it melted on the roads and we really didn't have any problems driving our hour back up the road to Richmond.

The food was again a delight. The shrimp curry, the chicken alfredo, the mussles, all drew my attention but there was much, much more.

The house was chock-a-block full with earger listeners, chairs, musical instruments, food and drink. If someone sneezed the entire house would rattle!

I haven't heard "Willie's Lady" in years and that was a delight. I remember the first time I heard it and tracking it down in the university library for copying, working out the minor chords. And there was "Patrick Spense" to add more cheer to a wintery spring evening, not to mention "Bringing Nelson Home." John Roberts was certainly in fine form. During the break he caught me staring at his pile of Anglo concertinas, and kindly explained how he could tell which one was which.

The one new song I tried out was "Midwatches" by old sailor-poet Burt Franklin Jenness; it's a keeper but I needed more than a week to get it hard-wired in.

Coming up in late April will be another nautical music swap at Captain Bunker's China Sea Marine Trading Company Annex, his wonderful barn in New Gloucester. I'll initiate a new thread soon with details. There appears to be no conflict with any scheduled musical event at Chez Sinsull or any other one in this area that I'm aware of.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

A truely outstanding evening. John out did himself with his well balanced program. The food was super good, as usual, and a good time was had by all.

A terrific evening. John's choice of material was outstanding and he gave a great performance, carrying on to the early hours with the song circle. He did a great rendition of Barrett's Privateers sometime after midnight and, although I was too tired to stay any longer, it was a wrench to leave with the party still going.

It was so good to see so many people there, enjoying the whole event. I'm sorry that Maeve had to leave so early, due to the weather, but it was good to meet her at last.

Good music, wonderful food and great company. Couldn't ask for more!

John's concert was as good as it gets, especially the last (pre-encore) song which was the one Tami requested. The food was incredible, and the people - lots of nice folks, most of whom were singers, so there were bold choruses with tasty harmonies. It was nice to see some folks I haven't seen in a while. Sorry I couldn't spend more time with bbc and Duane, or talk to people I'd just met. I wish I had more energy to hang around and sing some afterwards, but I got up to early and was having some serious consciousness issues.

Tami brought Bandit by before I left, and it was good to meet the little 4-legged gentleman.

Nice pictures Jacqui, where's the other guy that was there, you missed someone? The last picture with John & Kendall is with Duane who came with bbc.
It was a great concert & time & John's lovely to (he,he). Thanks John
Thonk you too Mary.

Mary the ice chest's mine you can keep the soda. Remember leaving I said I gotta get my ice chest but I'll leave you the soda? You said I'll get it you. I figured that you, as 2 bit mistress had a plan & who am I to question it. I guess there was some sort of misunderstanding. I'll take the blame for it though. Usually cause it's my fault.
The ride back was fine but slow, my car had on snow shoes & it threaded just fine.

Well...what a weekend. Mary...thanks for your hospitality and hard work. Always a treat to be in good company. John just out did himself this time. Really super choices of song and lots of info in between on each one. Needless to say. We also went to his concert in Marblehead at 2 pm Sunday with Yea Mariners All and Larry Young/John Rockwell at the Me and Thee Coffee House. Really spirited two hour performance for the library reading program. We are all very fortunate.......Anyway....the aftermath of John's house concert was great fun. Lots of great songs, more good food, enlightening discussions and strange antics were to be had until the wee hours on Sunday. What a glorious way to spend a weekend.
And who needs sheep when you crawl into bed at 4 a.m and find an warm feline under the sheets.....as a bedwarmer....and besides sheep do not have claws!
One other thing....I was reminded that there was another doryman on the 'Cat.....here's an offer from the Doryman off schooner Adventure...come down to see our restoration efforts....we'll have a lot of these(dories)on board when we start sailing again....same as she was 81 years ago.   www.schooner-adventure.org
Thanks again to Mary and John for a great and wonderful weekend and to our Mudcat friends with whom we shared it with...best crew going!
Doryman and his mate

I just added a new set of images to my flickr pages containing fifteen images I took at John's house concert. All images were taken when John stood up to sing a capella on two songs. All images were taken with the available light, no flash. Note: Images appear grainy at full size. I reset the camera's ISO setting from auto to 800, equivalent to a type of film one might use in a film camera to take pictures in low light level. To see the set of images click here.
