Congratulations to Alan Arkin, a singer from the 50s, who sang with the Tarriers and the Babysitters amongst others.
Well done.

Is Alan Arkin related to David Arkin, a housing organizer in California who has composed some topical songs related to his organizing efforts?

Ah, I just did a goggle search and determined that David Arkin was Alan Arkin's father: Click here!

Cordially,

My favorite role of Alan Arkin's is Mr. Singer in the movie, The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter. That's one of my favorite books, and I thought the movie was disappointing, but Alan Arkin was perfect for the role.

Just exactly what role was it that Alan Arkin wasn't perfect for because he has done them all so well? He's one of the true greats who takes some interesting parts and runs with them. I mean, who else could play Yossarian?   How about the burglar in "Wait Until Dark?" The old ball player in "Cooperstown" was unforgetable as was "The Defection of Simas Kudirka." Even the Philly Flash left us with another great role and "Glengarry, Glen Ross" did the same.

What a fantastic actor.

Very cool. I've been a fan of his for a long time -- some of his old Second City stuff is hilarious. Here's a nice little piece on http://www.folkera.com/Tarriers/bio.html

Alan Arkin's cousin Steve Arkin was an official member of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in 1964. He also does some acting and is an expert on Old Time Music.

"Spaw, I had forgotten "Wait Until Dark." What a movie! You're right--what role has he played in a movie in which he wasn't downright outstanding.

Reading this thread, I remembered that I only learned a year or so ago that he was also a folk musician. And then I promptly forgot.

Agreed,John O'L. The linked bio doesn't mention the film he made of Little Murders ('71),a greatly under-rated,hilarious black comedy that Arkin directed.

Interestingly I had made comment on this on my blog
http://billhahnprogramnotes.blogspot.com

I was so happy he won it and also at his speech----honesty about contests and scorekeeping.   Read about it on my blog---I wondered if it comes from that "folkie": background.   Though, he never does talk of it.

Al Arkin was a songwriter too. At a young age, (early Fifties) he wrote a song called "The Klan" which was in Sing Out! He was also a member of the famed Second City troup from Chicago which spawned the likes of Mike Nichols and Elaine May, Shelley Berman, Barbara Harris, Paul Sand, etc. etc. etc. He did a marvelous spoof on an immigrant Hispanic being interviewed by a social worker. He arranged most of the music for the Tarriers. His son Adam is following in the thespian footsteps. He is also a jazz player and jams with Larry Coryell (I think). We used to go to jazz jam sessions together.

We went to Los Angeles City College together in the early Fifties.

Alan's father, Dave Arkin was a singer/songwriter also. He was one of the songwriters that adapted the revised Unitarian hymnal used today by rewriting verses to old hymns.

Al is one of the most talented guys I've ever known.

Frank Hamilton

Can't believe that no one's yet mentioned that Alan Arkin played Captain John Yossarian (the bombardier) in Catch-22 (1970).

I agree with everything except Glengarry Glen Ross, which was terrible, even if he was good in it. In fact I've repressed his presence in that movie - and Yossarian was mentioned way up top!

MASH? Probably no one has mentioned it since he was never in it Kevin. Are you perhaps thinking of another fine actor named Allan Arbus who had a recurring role as the shrink, Major Sidney Freedman?

Yeah, I mentioned Yossarian right away because that was such a great part and he really nailed the Heller character perfectly.

But Myrrz......I really am in love with "Glengarry, Glen Ross." A wonderful ensemble cast but a tragic yet truthful insight into that type of sales and the guys who do it........or try. And it was powerfully done by every person in it. Now Myrzz, GO TO LUNCH......GO TO LUNCH.......Will you please just GO TO LUNCH!!!

OK I can't find anything either.
But we did see him on Sesame Street and the Muppet show and apparently he was with Alan Alda in 1965 in the 19th annual Tony awards.
He sure was in a lot of shows though.
