We could all refer to music stores and the library and some of us have and without any luck. I was under the impression this was a place for folks to share their interest in music and to lend each other a helping hand when able. The above response seems like a slap in the face to me and disturbes me greatly. I think I have the song at home, I'll take a look.

Red Wing is in the Digitrad database under Red Wing. There are also two parodies under the same name numbered (2) and (3). Neither of which would I sing to my family. But the first one is correct. Rex Rideout ([e-mail])

The sheet music to Red Wing is printed in a small songbook. Albert E. Brumley's Songs of the Pioneers. I believe this songbook is still available through Elderly Instruments. They have a web site for access to their catalogs, etc. Rex Rideout ([e-mail])

OK, one more posting. My oldtime music pal Gene saw this thread and emailed me for more info on the Brumley song books. I figure I can post it here so others may know. Albert E. Brumley produced some small, soft cover song books in the 70's. These are still available through mail order groups such as Elderly Instruments, and curiously, National Park gift shops. They are also available by writing: Albert E. Brumley & Sons 345 West Highway 54 Camdenton, MO 65020 They are offered from the Brumleys for $3.50 each but I have found them elsewhere for less than $3.00. The books are: Songs of the Pioneers (vols. 1, 2 and 3) Another book came out recently, America's Memory Valley which is a compilation of some selections from the above plus additional material and some history on the songs. This is just a little more info for everyone on these handy books. I am not connected with the Brumleys in any way and they have never heard of me. Rex Rideout ([e-mail])

I have several of the Albert E. Brumley song books and I bought mine for $2.59 at a gift shop at the beach. "Red Wing" is in "Songs Of The Pioneers", along with many other good old songs. I could give you the lyrics but I don't know how I could put in the notes. Best of luck!

Music for "Red Wing" is in quite a few of the "collection" books, but the Brumley books already mentioned are one of a very few (in my collection) that give lyrics. (I got my copies at "Wall Drug" - a historically famous Wall, South Dakota mercantile and tourist trap mecca, on one of our long road trips between Seattle and Kansas.) Those books seem to pop up in strange places - but seldom in book stores. Mail or web order is likely to be the most reliable method of finding one.

My index shows that it's treated in Logsdon's Whorehouse Bells, with my notation of "(4 refrain versions)". (Sometimes he does include a "clean" version, for reference.) I'll be out of touch for a few days, but will try to check which versions have been posted when I'm back.

The song is played a lot in sessions and campgrounds, and most everyone knows the tune; but it's seldom sung, largely because the lyrics are "unpronounceable" at "bluegrass tempo." Even "old-time" players usually pace it too fast for comfortable singing.

Never had any trouble singing it when I was a student. Of course, the lyrics we sang around the campfire are only found in collections such as the Randolph-Legman "Roll Me In Your Arms." The best in those volumes is close to "Red Wing (3) in the DT.
Here are the two last verses from this version as sung by Sam Eskin.

Now when she came to life, sshe seized a Bowie knife,
And with one foul pass cut his balls from his ass,
And now this cowboy's roving days are past.

Oh, the moon shines tonight on pretty Red Wing,
As she lies snoring, there hangs a warning,

Guest Q had it. My mother has an original sheet music--the cover art is beautiful, though completely inaccurate--that probably belonged to my great-grandfather. So, yeah--Levy looks like the best bet.

Very good stuff at the Duke site. The large images are only about 2x the filesize of the ones at Levy, but the "ad" pages are included - part of the charm of old sheet music.

Sorry to disagree, Ely, but no. Good as the Levy site is for researching so much music that is found nowhere else, the fact is that the images are a dingy gray and hard to read. BUT if the music is also available at Library of Congress, Duke, Brown University, etc., you'll find the images are vastly superior. Just check them out and see for yourself.

I have had some luck downloading Levy images and doing some enhancement to them to make them more legible, but none of that is necessary at Duke. In fact, if you use the large images, you are going to have to reduce them if you plan to print them. As Bill says, the smaller ones are "perfectly usable."

I save the images and then print them from "Irfanview" image viewer/editor...it has a preview and settings to choose 'fit image to page', so I don't have to reduce it, with other choices for margins, page numbers, titles..etc..

Bill, I didn't explain myself, but I also have used Irfanview for several years, with nary a complaint or problem. Irfan is continually upgrading his viewer.   We use it at work as well. Fast, simple, and FREE. Everyone should have it.

Upsizing from the smaller images is satisfactory, but you get better results from the downsizing method. Just make sure you have your filters set right. Resample, not resize is what to look for.

And now, back to Red Wing . . .

Most images at Levy are fairly good, and can be adjusted for a readable print- but I can't get above 125% because the image is to the right on the paper and the right margin gets cut off at 150%- a couple of inches of blank space to the left. No problems if I save to jpeg file and treat with Adobe. Not sure how to correct this.

The images at the Duke site are better, but sometimes odd to my system. E. g., 1st page of music (p. 3) of Red Wing insists on printing on two pages- the last line of musical notation on p. 2. Yes, I used fit to page. However, I save the image to a jpeg file and trim, size, adjust contrast, etc. with Adobe (the free 'business' edition that comes with printers, scanners, etc.) and a lovely print is the result. I often do the same with Levy material, selecting a readable size and enhancing with the Adobe.

Thanks to whomever corrected my link to Levy- I used the exact URL shown by D. G. above, but it leads to Search. Where did the "query=red%20wing" come from? It did not show on my location line. Was ist los?

Dale -- thanks for the info regarding various sheet music sites.

Bill downloaded and printed the Duke sheet music to surprise me (I sing Red Wing accompanying myself on the MacArthur harp). It is gorgeous. I wasn't as surprised as I might have been though, because I had already downloaded Levy's version.

Have been frustrated with trying to read the musical notation in some of the Levy sheet music. Will see if I can find the same songs at some of these other sites.

Copies of the original sheet music turn up on E-bay on a fairly regular basis. I got one a couple of years ago for less than $10.
