Subject: Julie Felix in Hull on Thursday From: Les from Hull Date: 26 Feb 07 - 02:36 PM A Unique night, not to be missed, please scroll down for more details and links!! 1960s Folk Icon JULIE FELIX. 60's icon, at the Adelphi. Thursday March 1st £8/6 A unique night for all 'beatniks' and cool cats. Julie Felix comes to Hull, and plays the ADELPHI, 89 De Grey Street (tel 348216) on Thursday 1st March 2007 with top support from, NANCY ELIZABETH CUNLIFFE from Lancashire (twentysomething highly tipped singer in the vein of Sandy Denny / Anne Briggs). Plus recorded Tunes of a 60s folk and beat nature played by Beatnik Eddy. £8 or £6 doors open at 8pm tickets on door or ring venue. Just turn up! Julie Felix is American/Mexican by birth and left her native California in the early 1960's to do the 'on the road' thing, arrived in Europe. Eventually she hitched with her guitar to England in 1964. She played the folk clubs in the heady days of the folk beatnik boom of the time, playing with the likes of John Renbourne, Martin Carthy and so on. Soon she was a hit, making albums, living the life and singing about it. She was lucky, she got a TV Show!! THE JULIE FELIX show, where she could showcase new talent and folksy stuff. One guy she brought over was Leonard Cohen, who was not well known in 1967 till Julie put him on her show. She's toured everywhere and is still out there doing her thing. Thesedays she's puts a lot of energy into campaigning against landmines, the War, for peace and ecological causes. Recently she's been playing with JohnPaul Jones of Led Zeppelin fame! Check her website. She's a character, had a full life, and is coming to Hull to play. This night will certainly be unusual, you don't get too many stars of the swinging 60s at the Adelphi anymore. She sings her own songs, the songbook of Dylan and her contempories in the 60s (Donovan/Cohen etc), Native American songs and chants! The support act is from another generation, so be early and dont miss the talented, NANCY ELIZABETH CUNLIFFE. A Lancashire based folk singer in her early 20s who's ace. Check out the links to hear and see more. Nancy's website The Adelphi Club |

Subject: RE: Julie Felix in Hull on Thursday From: Scrump Date: 01 Mar 07 - 05:17 AM You didn't mention the Frost Report, Les - that's the TV show that first made her famous in the UK. It also made John Cleese and the Two Ronnies famous. I'll be interested to hear what sort of stuff she does these days - please let me know how it goes. |

Subject: RE: Julie Felix in Hull on Thursday From: Les from Hull Date: 03 Mar 07 - 08:43 AM Sorry to be late getting back to you Scrump. Julie was, well, simply wonderful. She didn't really know what she was letting herself in for, obviously slightly aprehensive about the Adelphi's somewhat 'individual' character and appearance. (Who said 'dump'? Outside!) But as soon as she started singing she knew she was in the company of friends and fellow-travellers, and the warmth flowed back and forth between the audience and Julie. She did an extended set of songs, including a number of protest songs (yeah, still protesting!), and featuring the work of Dylan, Phil Ochs and others, and, of course, herself, singing and playing as well as she ever did in the past. Altogether, a memorable night. |

Subject: RE: Julie Felix in Hull on Thursday From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 04 Mar 07 - 03:13 AM Julie stole the show at the 2005 Gainsborough Folk Festival - an absolute star and, off-stage, a lovely, gentle woman. Still got a fantastic voice with that lovely smokiness. Her performance of 'Boots of Spanish Leather' was one of the most intense and powerful I've ever heard. Anyone going to see her and expecting a twee, spent, played-out artist is in for a shock - she's still truly a force to be reckoned with, and it was a privilege to stand beside her on stage to introduce her, and thank her at the end for a great performance. And her old Martin 12-fret is to die for! GAS attack alert! S:0) |

Subject: RE: Julie Felix in Hull on Thursday From: Scrump Date: 08 Mar 07 - 04:22 AM Just following up on this. I had the pleasure of supporting Julie last night. I agree with Strollin' Johnny above - she is still an excellent singer and entertainer, and a lovely person to boot - no airs and graces, just a friendly, down to earth person it was a pleasure to meet and to hear. During her set she was kind enough to thank me for my set, which was much appreciated, I can tell you! If you get the chance to see her during this tour, take it! |
