Subject: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: skipy Date: 26 Feb 07 - 05:26 PM Just got a new guitar tuner, (that is a new tuner, not a tuner designed for a new guitar) it says in the instructions "clip on neck" so I did, I then found out that as it is clipped on my neck I can't see it ( a little painful too!) I tried to use it in a mirror, a little impractical and the letters are the wrong way round. The next sensible option would be to clip it to someone else's neck and have them stand in front of you. Tech help needed please. Skipy |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: terrier Date: 26 Feb 07 - 05:31 PM Is it the little square one that clips onto the guitar head ?? If it is it should swivel round. If not, re read the instructions the right way up 8*] |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: open mike Date: 26 Feb 07 - 05:56 PM is it an intellitouch or an intelli? |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: skipy Date: 26 Feb 07 - 06:04 PM Think it is an intellilack! Skipy |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Bernard Date: 26 Feb 07 - 06:06 PM I think I see the problem... put it back in the box and return it to the shop - you're too daft to own one! (Paraphrase of infamous WordPerfect help desk response...!). Instructions can be very ambiguous, can't they?! |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: skipy Date: 26 Feb 07 - 06:22 PM I really do hope that the story that you are referring to is true, sadly, I suspect not, but it is a great story. Regards Skipy |

Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 26 Feb 07 - 08:06 PM Obviously faulty instructions. They should have said "clip on head", not "clip on neck". There are numerous ways to clip a tuner onto one's head so that it can be seen clearly. Ears are probably not the best choice, but lips, nostrils, or eyebrows should work quite well. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: JohnInKansas Date: 26 Feb 07 - 08:34 PM Does the display on your mew tuner look like THIS? If so ... ... ... ... John |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Mr Happy Date: 26 Feb 07 - 08:51 PM 'mew tuner'?? for caterwauling perhaps? |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: leeneia Date: 26 Feb 07 - 08:56 PM Do they want you to clip the TUNER on the neck or the PICKUP, which is then connected to the tuner with a cable? Because that's how my friend tunes her harp. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Ebbie Date: 26 Feb 07 - 09:27 PM I think your idea of clipping it onto someone else's neck is a good one. An errant significant other might stay in your sight through the whole gig. Worth trying. Tuners and capos are remarkable instruments. When I need to reach a note that is normally too high for me, a capo around my neck does the trick handsomely. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Jim Krause Date: 26 Feb 07 - 10:51 PM Ebbie, a quick wedgie will also work. :-D Jim Krause |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: JennieG Date: 27 Feb 07 - 01:21 AM Ebbie, I find that tightening one's shoelaces (assuming one is wearing laces) will always assist in reaching high notes. Alternatively one can always tighten one's corset laces. Cheers JennieG |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Geoff the Duck Date: 27 Feb 07 - 04:19 AM Skipy - are you sure that the package said TUNER and not TIE? I have a tie which has musical notes printed on it. I always find it a useful prompt when I have to remember what they look like for tuning my banjo. Or was it a gift from somebody who does not enjoy your playing? Once again check the spelling on the packaging. They may have persuaded you to wear a TUNA clipped to your neck so that they can be forewarned of your approach by the smell of old fish! Yours helpfully, Geoff the Duck. p.s. Quack! |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: skipy Date: 27 Feb 07 - 06:24 AM G the D, you can TUNE! a banjo? Skipy |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Bernard Date: 27 Feb 07 - 07:10 AM 'Tune' and 'Banjo' do not belong in the same sentence - unless pronounced by a judge...!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Geoff the Duck Date: 27 Feb 07 - 07:22 AM Sure you can! Just as long as you can remember what the notes look like! Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Bernard Date: 27 Feb 07 - 11:14 AM Quote from an 'old timer' as found on the cover of Pete Seeger's banjo tutor... 'Hell, there ain't no notes on a banjo, you just play it!' |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Leadfingers Date: 27 Feb 07 - 05:13 PM I refuse to post to a thread that is impolite to banjos !! |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Songster Bob Date: 27 Feb 07 - 05:52 PM Despite the fact that banjo players spend half their life tuning (and the other half playing out-of-tune), I assume you're dealing with one of those tuners (like the Intellitouch models) that clip to the peghead -- not the neck. Typically, they clip on so that the viewing screen faces the back of the peghead, where you can see it. I have see a smaller type, oval in shape, where the viewscreen is facing front. I think that kind has a swivel so that it can be turned to 90 degrees angle, so you can see it, way out there at the end of the strings. I think these are harder to use, since the natural angle for holding the instrument means you have to cock your head over unnaturally to use it. In this case, you "hang your head over/ watch the dial glow"). Good luck. Bob |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Bernard Date: 27 Feb 07 - 06:00 PM Erm... Bob... this thread ain't serious...!! ;o> LF - you cannot be impolite to a banjo... at least, my two don't bat an eyelid. Come to think of it, they've got no eyelids... |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Bee Date: 27 Feb 07 - 06:06 PM I want one of John in Kansas' 'Mew Tuners' - young Tommy here has just discovered he has one (a Mew), and it is desperately in need of tuning, as it seems to be a slightly off Em squeak at the moment. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Songster Bob Date: 27 Feb 07 - 09:52 PM Not serious? Are you serious? Unserious thought on Mudcat? Seriously, I thought the original question might have been "real," despite its complete silliness. Those of us who have taught instrumental music have heard even more odd things from well-meaning students, so I played it "straight." My bad. If you'd like, I'll give a smart-ass answer to all the other questions I see here. Okay? Bob |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Geoff the Duck Date: 28 Feb 07 - 04:36 AM Sounds pretty reasonable Songster Bob. These Mew tuners - are they intended to work on cats? OR Is the main note producing component a cat? And Songster Bob - what DOOES a smart ass use to keep in tune? (We really need to know) Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Bernard Date: 28 Feb 07 - 02:37 PM I'd have thought 'mew tuners' were best for tuning cat gut strings...! ;o) Maybe a smart ass gets someone else to do the donkey work...! |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 01 Mar 07 - 12:40 PM "I assume you're dealing with one of those tuners (like the Intellitouch models) that clip to the peghead -- not the neck." Actually many have often thought of clipping something to the neck of a banjo player.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Bernard Date: 01 Mar 07 - 01:49 PM Hmmm... an 'intelli-garotte', perhaps? ;o) |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: JohnInKansas Date: 01 Mar 07 - 04:17 PM My carefully planted apparent typo (mew for new) has confirmed my suspicion that very few people actually read my posts, as so many seem unaware that for decades my proficiency has been measured by my ability to make more typos per minute than most professional typists. I am quit happy to have confirmed my suspicion so easily; and it is reflects positively on the character of the 'cat population to see that I did not have to resort to my reservoir of "typos" with obvious scatological interpretations for this experiment, as I was afraid I might need to do to elicit comments in the usual manner here. John |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Richard Bridge Date: 01 Mar 07 - 04:34 PM HOw best to apply peg to head of SKipy? |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Bee Date: 01 Mar 07 - 04:38 PM But John in K., it was a typo any cat owner must respond to, regardless of knowing your normal typo to typoless rate of post production. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Songster Bob Date: 01 Mar 07 - 04:48 PM "And Songster Bob - what DOES a smart ass use to keep in tune?" How the hell would I know? Do I LOOK like a smart-ass?* Bob * Don't answer that! |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: JohnInKansas Date: 01 Mar 07 - 11:26 PM And Bee - you'll note my adopting of typical "cat" attitude, when after doing something incredibly stupid one licks a paw, wipes an ear, and adopts the expression that says "Why are you looking at me? I meant to do that." John |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 02 Mar 07 - 07:13 AM "what DOES a smart ass use to keep in tune?" A Donkey Engine? :-) |

I saw that very behaviour sequence this aft when Young Tom fell off the top of his scratching post (actually a foot-thick chunk of tree) after falling asleep there. ;-D |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Justa Picker Date: 03 Mar 07 - 12:09 PM Just get yourself one of these. It will be the last tuner you'll ever need. (You might have to save up for it though.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: JohnInKansas Date: 03 Mar 07 - 01:10 PM Strobe tuning is s o o o old-hat. The tuner he really needs is This One. With it, he can be out of tune in any of 8 different scale systems and in any key over an 8 octave range. With the multi-mode tuning, he can easily accommodate the "equi-tempered" vs "Pythagorean" Also in fast mode he'll be able to show that his – and everyone else's - strings vary by a couple of cents on each pluck, so he can WIN with the argument that those who call him out of tune are just listening to the wrong end of the note. It recently listed for around $400 (US) but the list price has been brought down to $139, and a little web shopping can find it for (barely <) $100. (It comes with a belt clip.) John |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: Geoff the Duck Date: 04 Mar 07 - 08:56 AM I usually tune my banjo in Grenwich Mean Time, apart from those few songs when only British Summet Time will do. These tuners you recommend - I looked at the web links, but can't see how you are supposed to fasten to Skipy's neck... Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: JohnInKansas Date: 04 Mar 07 - 11:31 AM GtD - That last one I suggested only has a belt clip, but Skipy could clip it to his dog collar. (If it ain't got too many studs on it.) John |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech help, new guitar tuner From: GUEST,banjoman Date: 05 Mar 07 - 11:43 AM Whats all this crap about banjos never able to be tuned. I build my own and they always tune correctly and stay in tune. Unlike caterwaualing melodeons whose owners insist that they are in tune. I occasionally use an Intellitouch Tuner on my guitar and many banjos and never have any trouble with it although it pays to check the batteries if any problems show up, as they are inaccurate if the batteries are running down. |
