Just got a new guitar tuner, (that is a new tuner, not a tuner designed for a new guitar) it says in the instructions "clip on neck" so I did, I then found out that as it is clipped on my neck I can't see it ( a little painful too!) I tried to use it in a mirror, a little impractical and the letters are the wrong way round. The next sensible option would be to clip it to someone else's neck and have them stand in front of you.
Tech help needed please.

Is it the little square one that clips onto the guitar head ?? If it is it should swivel round.
If not, re read the instructions the right way up 8*]

Obviously faulty instructions. They should have said "clip on head", not "clip on neck". There are numerous ways to clip a tuner onto one's head so that it can be seen clearly. Ears are probably not the best choice, but lips, nostrils, or eyebrows should work quite well.

Do they want you to clip the TUNER on the neck or the PICKUP, which is then connected to the tuner with a cable? Because that's how my friend tunes her harp.

I think your idea of clipping it onto someone else's neck is a good one. An errant significant other might stay in your sight through the whole gig. Worth trying.

Tuners and capos are remarkable instruments. When I need to reach a note that is normally too high for me, a capo around my neck does the trick handsomely.

Ebbie,

I find that tightening one's shoelaces (assuming one is wearing laces) will always assist in reaching high notes.

Alternatively one can always tighten one's corset laces.

Skipy - are you sure that the package said TUNER and not TIE?
I have a tie which has musical notes printed on it. I always find it a useful prompt when I have to remember what they look like for tuning my banjo.
Or was it a gift from somebody who does not enjoy your playing? Once again check the spelling on the packaging. They may have persuaded you to wear a TUNA clipped to your neck so that they can be forewarned of your approach by the smell of old fish!

Despite the fact that banjo players spend half their life tuning (and the other half playing out-of-tune), I assume you're dealing with one of those tuners (like the Intellitouch models) that clip to the peghead -- not the neck.

Typically, they clip on so that the viewing screen faces the back of the peghead, where you can see it. I have see a smaller type, oval in shape, where the viewscreen is facing front. I think that kind has a swivel so that it can be turned to 90 degrees angle, so you can see it, way out there at the end of the strings. I think these are harder to use, since the natural angle for holding the instrument means you have to cock your head over unnaturally to use it. In this case, you "hang your head over/ watch the dial glow").

I want one of John in Kansas' 'Mew Tuners' - young Tommy here has just discovered he has one (a Mew), and it is desperately in need of tuning, as it seems to be a slightly off Em squeak at the moment.

My carefully planted apparent typo (mew for new) has confirmed my suspicion that very few people actually read my posts, as so many seem unaware that for decades my proficiency has been measured by my ability to make more typos per minute than most professional typists.

I am quit happy to have confirmed my suspicion so easily; and it is reflects positively on the character of the 'cat population to see that I did not have to resort to my reservoir of "typos" with obvious scatological interpretations for this experiment, as I was afraid I might need to do to elicit comments in the usual manner here.

Strobe tuning is s o o o old-hat. The tuner he really needs is This One.

With it, he can be out of tune in any of 8 different scale systems and in any key over an 8 octave range.

With the multi-mode tuning, he can easily accommodate the "equi-tempered" vs "Pythagorean" crap debate by choosing which to tune to; and when the banjo player suggests playing in Werckmeister III, Vallotti, Mean Tone Eb, Kirnberger III, Young, Mean Tone D#, or Kellner scale tuning he won't be at a loss.

Also in fast mode he'll be able to show that his – and everyone else's - strings vary by a couple of cents on each pluck, so he can WIN with the argument that those who call him out of tune are just listening to the wrong end of the note.

It recently listed for around $400 (US) but the list price has been brought down to $139, and a little web shopping can find it for (barely <) $100.

(It comes with a belt clip.)

I usually tune my banjo in Grenwich Mean Time, apart from those few songs when only British Summet Time will do.

These tuners you recommend - I looked at the web links, but can't see how you are supposed to fasten to Skipy's neck...

Whats all this crap about banjos never able to be tuned. I build my own and they always tune correctly and stay in tune. Unlike caterwaualing melodeons whose owners insist that they are in tune.
I occasionally use an Intellitouch Tuner on my guitar and many banjos and never have any trouble with it although it pays to check the batteries if any problems show up, as they are inaccurate if the batteries are running down.
