Tone Deaf Leopard's Gnus Tuesday Feb 27th 2007

We were amazed to receive a call from BBC Radiio Kent this morning. They were looking for unusual performers. Thank you Roger from Dartford. We went live on the Pat Marsh Show! At the end of a short interview, he asked if we have a cd. We said it was nearly ready. He said "Let me know when it escapes and we'll get you on the show!"

We don't quite believe it either.!
Be Afraid!

Unusual hardly describes them. We were "treated" to their performance this week. Escaped, they certainly did and the sooner they are put back firmly under lock and key the better so far as I'm concerned. What they're doing doesn't belong in folk clubs, totally lacking in rhythm and harmony. In an institution or on another planet, maybe.

I hear Friday Folk at Orpington is going down fast. Couldn't be anything to do with weekly doses of TDL could it? And who is this Roger from Dartford?

I was also out, but had the car radio on! I don't think Radio Kent were looking so much for 'unusual' performers, more 'the worst singers I have ever heard'!!!

"Each weekday between 10am - 1pm the award winning Pat Marsh show brings together famous faces, the greatest music and a stack of laughs."

So which catagory did they fit into?

Subject: RE: TDL (Tone Deaf Leopard) on Radio Kent
From: GUEST,Pat Rainham Marsh

Yes, agree with Dave M. apart from a slight difference in the wording. Pat Marsh was asking for "the worst singer that you have ever had to endure".

As for Synbyn's reference to Roger from Dartford it should be the finale message to TDL: "Roger, Over and Out!"

As for the reference to Dartford by TDL on the programme , I cannot imagine that TDL "go down well with the Dartford Audience." More a case of endurance and politeness taking place?

Subject: RE: TDL (Tone Deaf Leopard) on Radio Kent
From: GUEST,Roger from Dartford
Date: 02 Mar 07 - 05:18 AM

I guess it's time I stepped forward, so it's Roger and In!
Pat Marsh was indeed asking for people to phone in about the WORST singers they had ever had to put up with and because TDL fitted this description perfectly I couldn't resist responding.
As for Sue's comment that they had been well received at Dartford, there was a large audience in the club for Jez Lowe and, like all folk audiences most were too well-mannered to do other than applaud. And, I fully admit that TDL has novelty value the FIRST time you see and hear them. However, it was very noticeable that among regulars who had heard them before a good number disappeared to the bar or kept their hands firmly in their laps. I've yet to speak to a Dartford regular who wants to see TDL there again.
So come on TDL, stop making audiences at other folk clubs suffer. We find your performance embarrassing to watch and unpleasant to listen to. If we really want to catch your act we'll come over to Orpington.

Having heard them on several occasions I firmly believe that whatever apparent lack of musical ability is more than made up for in their enthusiasm and encouragement of others. Surely that is part of our 'Folk' ethic?

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: TDL (Tone Deaf Leopard) on Radio Kent

Not sure I'd go that far. The material is amazing, the performance also but in a different sort of way!

I certainly agree about our 'folk ethic' otherwise nobody would ever improve from humble beginnings. Surely, however, the issue of ethics rubs both ways. If you knowingly have a truly bad act, with no hope of any real improvement (as in this case, in my view) then ethically you shouldn't put people in the position of having to watch and listen to it!

We had lots of praise for the song we did. We know we're not the bestperformers, but our songs at least deserve to be heard.Never mind,eh... we know who our friends are.

Well Said Woodsie, that, in essence, is the essence of TDL - a whole load of FUN - not to be taken seriously, they KNOW they cant really sing, (Well Sue, anyway, in fact Trevor has quite a good voice !) -

what does it matter that they are not too good, ?? After all, I have been to Many Many folk clubs and heard persons who are not really good, and also not really my cup of 'folk' - BUT I think I can bear to listen to TWO songs, good or bad, and applaud their courage for getting up and doing something - it's what folk clubs are all about

and if they ACTUALLY make fame by being bad, so what, bet you cant do that???
Nuff Said, I enjoy them, its a LARFF - why be miserable?

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK TDL !!!!

regards - jo-jo

Cheers Jo-jo and Woodsie. Too right, there is too much stuffiness on the folk club circuit, and we've been told that wherever we go. As you know we are not afraid to go anywhere. And if people who can sing want to sing our songs for us - they are only too welcome!

Agree with Woodsie & JoJo, fun is definitely involved with TDL along with the ability to laugh with others and at themselves too. These are qualities needed in all Folkies surely!

They've done Radio so TDL should be aiming for the Tele now.
Maybe a bash at the old Eurovision song contest next year.
It should be theirs for the taking.
What do you think?

I have heard, er, reports of TLD recently from a fellow Mudcatter (this week in fact) who has seen them perform (I have not had that particular privilege!).

If these, ...um, characteristics of their performances are meant to be taken as fun then I say "All power to Tone Deaf Leopard!" as they are to be regarded as infinitely better than appalling floor singers who think they are actually very good.

I was subjected to an extended floor spot of the latter type at a local folk club on Monday this week and actually had to leave, totally traumatised, at half time despite there being a talented booked act!

I think you can safely say they play it for fun and take it all in good part - a bit like (decades ago) Derek, at Farningham, but unlike him with some wholly wonderfully tasteless (unlike the food at the Road Kill Cafe) original lyrics.

So come on TDL when is your clothes label hitting the market? We already have the CD

I actually got the snow leopard skinnies in Evans. I must admit they look 'orrible, but they're warm! If you want to see photos go to the link below.

'Totally traumatised' Well guest have you seen them? if not I don't think you are in any position to advise, and if you have seen them, maybe you are 'TD' Once you have seen TDL you too could be totally traumatised, shocked, stunned or amazed!!! It's certainly an experience you would not forget, now that can be either a good experience or the complete opposite. Counselling can be used for both sides of the coin as even a superlative experience can be just too much to take in in one go, as can the opposite experience, both can leave you totally traumatised. ;-))

Am I missing a point here? I thought that Redsnapper was referring to another floor spot. We haven't been to a Monday club in yonks.... unless you count Nellie's on April 30th. Then we only did two songs. On re-reading his posting I think he's at least tolerant of our performance.

Hi Woodsie, long time no contact, how you then?

Anyway i agree with Girl Friday you have it totally wrong, reading redsnappers comment i think he was talking about another floor spot, of course if he saw TDL, he would be totally speechless, traumatised, shocked, stunned and amazed, and more importantly unable to move, let alone leave, they are truly a once in a lifetime experience.
