hildebrand here, with joybell's permission: a lot of the sites on the web say that his real name was chester powers jr, and that he was born in 1943. i met dino in boston in 1960, and i can't believe his real name was chester powers jr. once he gave me his address in new york, and it was right in the middle of the italian section of the east village -- all the names on the bells were italian too. nor can i believe he was only 17. he spoke of his experiences in the air force. any light to be shed on this?

One of the very best 1970's Ferraris, I thought. In the hands of Nino Vaccarella, it was virtually unbeatable in the Targa Florio.

I would occassionly run into into Dino in The Village in the '60's. A really charismatic guy, and when he played with Quicksilver at the Fillmore East he tore the house up.

Some people say he killed Quicksilver. Let's say he did a poor job of saving a dying band.

From: GUEST,michaelr

Joybell -- check out Wesley's link for info.

pdq -- Some people say he killed Quicksilver. Let's say he did a poor job of saving a dying band.
What utter nonsense! Dino Valenti was a founding member of Quicksilver and recorded with them from 1969 to 1975. He was an incredibly charismatic performer and an influential songwriter. "Get Together" was a huge hit and remains THE anthem of the 60s.

Folk music angle: DV and Hoyt Axton ruled the Village in the TBD (Time Before Dylan). With Quicksilver, DV recorded the "Rebel" song which has been discussed here ("I will not be reconstructed, but I do not give a damn").

WHAT ABOUT ME? (Dino Valenti)

You poisoned my sweet water.
You cut down my green trees.
The food you fed my children
Was the cause of their disease.

My world is slowly fallin' down
And the airs not good to breathe.
And those of us who care enough,
We have to do something.......

(Chorus)
Oh.......oh What you gonna do about me?
Oh.......oh What you gonna do about me?

Your newspapers,
They just put you on.
They never tell you
The whole story.

They just put your
Young ideas down.
I was wonderin' could this be the end
Of your pride and glory?

(Chorus)

I work in your factory.
I study in your schools.
I fill your penitentiaries.
And your military too!

And I feel the future trembling,
As the word is passed around.
"If you stand up for what you do believe,
Be prepared to be shot down."

(Chorus)

And I feel like a stranger
In the land where I was born
And I live like an outlaw.
An' I'm always on the run..........................

An Im always getting busted
And I got to take a stand........
I believe the revolution
Must be mighty close at hand.......................

(Chorus)

I smoke marijuana
But I cant get behind your wars.
And most of what I do believe
Is against most of your laws

I'm a fugitive from injustice
But I'm goin' to be free.
Cause your rules and regulations
They dont do the thing for me

(Chorus)

And I feel like a stranger
In the land where I was born
And I live just like an outlaw.
An' I'm always on the run.

Cheers,
Michael

Here is the list of people on "Shady Grove", released in DEC 1969.

David Brown        Engineer

John Cipollina        Guitar, Vocals

Gary Duncan        Bass, Guitar, Vocals

Greg Elmore        Percussion, Drums

David Freiberg        Bass, Guitar, Viola, Vocals

Snarly Grumble        Mixing

Dan Healy        Engineer, Mixing

Nicky Hopkins        Organ, Piano, Celeste, Cello, Harpsichord, Keyboards

Mike Leary        Engineer

Quicksilver Messenger Service        Performer, Mixing

Bob Shumaker        Engineer

(PS: I don't see "Chet Powers Jr." or "Dino Valente" anywhere, although the title song with the words "where all the pigs have tails" sounds like he probably wrote it. Credit is to "P.O.Wands" sounds like a made-up handle.)

OK, so it was 1970.

If you read the info on the site Wesley linked to, you'll see that DV was a founding member of Quicksilver, but was busted for pot before they began recording their first album in 1968.

After his release, he recorded five albums with the band between 1970 and their final breakup in 1975.

Info from here.

Cheers,
Michael

"Quicksilver Messenger Service":   near great

"Happy Trails" (a live record that shows them as a "jam band"):   truly great

"Shady Grove": OK, but decline has started with overtly political and druggy material found in later records (see Michaer's example, above)

the rest of their records: so-what stuff, Valente could say about the advancing art of Rock Music is the early 70s "I got stoned and I missed it"

Thank you so much everyone. Wesley thank you for that site.
This all began with some idle musing about the past. Hildebrand had some connections with Dino during the 60s. He says Dino looked out for him. Was always friendly. Hildebrand wrote a short piece about an experience in the early 60s and mentioned Dino. I got curious -- We heard his song played in the supermarket and we both got to talking about him.
I'll spend some time searching through the site and see if there are any familiar names there. I love to hear Hildebrand's stories about his wanderings.
Cheers, Joy

I like Dino's solo stuff more. He released a self titeled album in 1968. The best work of QMS is their first record. And thier version of Dave Brubecks Take Five (Gold and Silver) is wonderful.

I always enjoyed the Quicksilver stuff without Dino more than with him. His singing was a little, er, overwrought for my taste. Who Do You Love has Gary Duncan on vocals as does Dino's Song, and those are probably my two faves. Of Dino's vocals, the one on Fresh Air is my favorite, but the singing in that song is eclipsed by Cipollina's guitar break, and Nicky Hopkins' galloping piano solo.

Hi if anyone is still out there...it is 2010 now! but I just wanted to say Dino was born in 1937 and passed away in 1994 of heart attack but he was very ill in the 80s from a brain malformation which he had surgery for. I think Dino was the hottest singer songwriter/performer ever! The fact that is not famous is a consipracy created by those who were jealous of him.
