Subject: RE: Lunar Eclipse From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 05 Mar 07 - 11:06 AM Whenever I wanted to show my little daughters a lunar eclipse it was cloudy with an invisible moon. Now they are adult and have left the house, so it was a clear sky for the first time here since decennia at such an occasion. A wonderful sight from all of my balconies! |

Subject: RE: Lunar Eclipse From: terrier Date: 04 Mar 07 - 09:05 AM Hi Greg, I posted a link to Spaceweather.com a little earlier. If you use that link, then go to photo gallery and then to animation and scroll down, that should answer your question, I think. |

Subject: RE: Lunar Eclipse From: greg stephens Date: 04 Mar 07 - 08:54 AM Fantastic, best I've ever seen. I was in the middle of Hanley(Stoke-on-Trent), full-on street lights but still perfect to watch. I'm afraid I still havent worked out why it went out at the top but didn't come back at the bottom. And the three dimesional look of the red globe, as opposed to the normal flat disc effect, was astonishing. An axtraordinary experience. |
Subject: RE: Lunar Eclipse From: Cats Date: 04 Mar 07 - 08:38 AM We saw it clear as a bell. We kept popping outside to have a look and followed it through. I suppose we are very lucky with no light spill whatsoever being in the middle of nowhere on the moors. Street lights? What are those? |
Subject: RE: Lunar Eclipse From: Leadfingers Date: 04 Mar 07 - 08:33 AM Bloody light pollution ! Had a quick look out the back , couldnt see a star so thought we had overcast ! In fact the eclipse was well visible ! great stuff ! -And some good piccies , thanks ladies |

Subject: RE: Lunar Eclipse From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Mar 07 - 06:42 AM Saw all the stages - Looked interesting in the 'red phase'. The appearing and disappearing realy showed teh wax/wain cycle in one easy lesson:-) Now then. A lunar eclipse happens when the earth gets between the moon and the sun. A solar eclipse happens when the moon gets between the sun and the earth. What do you call it when the sun gets between the moon and the earth? ;-) Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Lunar Eclipse From: ard mhacha Date: 04 Mar 07 - 06:24 AM Perfect viewing, best ever view. |
Subject: RE: Lunar Eclipse From: Alec Date: 04 Mar 07 - 06:01 AM Mea Culpa. The next Lunar eclipse totally visible throughout the U.K.(weather permitting) is September 2015. This is what I ought to have written at 03:41 AM. Apologies for not doing so. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Liz the Squeak Date: 04 Mar 07 - 05:42 AM Fibs - I long ago came to the conclusion that the more letters after their name a person has, the less common sense they have. Looks like your man is a perfect example of this! I braved the muddy garden and saw the last little bit of it, a very bright moon with a bite out of the side of it, incredible! Ed - circular orbits. Draw a little circle on a piece of paper. Draw a bigger circle over it, bisecting the bottom and right side of your circle. That's how the moon appeared to disappear from the bottom and reappear to the left. LTS |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: terrier Date: 04 Mar 07 - 05:36 AM Lots of pics of the red moon already published on Spaceweather |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: JennyO Date: 04 Mar 07 - 05:22 AM There is one on the 28th August 2007. Here is a site showing the details - it looks like those of us on the East coast of Oz will be in luck next time! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: jacqui.c Date: 04 Mar 07 - 03:52 AM I saw it just as I was leaving the Allan Taylor concert in Faldingworth, Really clear night so the view was amazing. There is not a lot of light polution out there and the drive back to Newark was enhanced by the dark sky and jewel bright stars. I almost gave in to the temptation to stop the car, turn off the lights and get out to really see the sky but, on a country road with nowhere to pull off, that I knew about, it was just too much of a hazard. A great finish to a truly great evening. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Hawker Date: 04 Mar 07 - 03:51 AM I thought it was 28th August 2007! Cheers, Lucy |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Alec Date: 04 Mar 07 - 03:41 AM Beautiful event last night, the more so for being seen through reddish cloud. The next one is in September 2015. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: JennyO Date: 04 Mar 07 - 01:37 AM What a shame we missed out on it here in Oz. It was after 7.30am and after moonset. I believe Western Australia might have caught the beginning of it. Maybe we'll get to see the one in August. Anyway, can't complain too much, after all the lovely comet viewings we had in January - including one night at our BBQ and session when dozens of our friends were able to see Comet McNaught from the backyard! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Sorcha Date: 03 Mar 07 - 08:59 PM I didn't get to see it at all. Dark too late. Nice moon tonight tho! Nice eyeball pic, Fibs! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Stilly River Sage Date: 03 Mar 07 - 08:54 PM I saw a little bit of the eclipse, but from here in Texas it was a very partial event. Beautiful moon. SRS |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 03 Mar 07 - 08:50 PM terrier, I couldn't find anything on Conservapedia about that dragon thing, must be some sort of Liberal nonsense... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: terrier Date: 03 Mar 07 - 08:02 PM Good pics FM. Thats the best eclipse I've seen for years, usually there's too much cloud. As Bainbo says, once the glare of the moon is taken away, you really do see the 3D image. The moon looked somehow smaller and nearer. Quite awesome. What's this about the dragon spitting the moon back up? I've not heard of that befor. G'night all. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: GUEST,Ed Date: 03 Mar 07 - 07:57 PM Good views here in Manchester (UK), but can someone more astronomically minded than me explain why the moon 'disappeared' from the bottom up, but 'reappeared' from the left? Thanks, Ed |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Fibula Mattock Date: 03 Mar 07 - 07:54 PM My newly Phd-ed boyfriend has just said "does it [the moon] just go back to normal now?". No dear, it stays like that forever. For someone alledgedly so brilliant - and a scientist to boot - he's dumb as a bag of rocks. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Liz the Squeak Date: 03 Mar 07 - 07:34 PM Cool pics Fibs... I missed it again. LTS |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Fibula Mattock Date: 03 Mar 07 - 07:19 PM my photos (from out the window in east London, so light pollution and a not-brilliant camera, but I got 3 good shots): http://www.flickr.com/photos/kate_d/409240628/ |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Bainbo Date: 03 Mar 07 - 07:15 PM 00:12, UK. The light's coming back now. The moon looks like it's wearing a Sunderland football shirt - red and white! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Hawker Date: 03 Mar 07 - 07:12 PM Ooooh errr I was going to take some pics as the moon emerged but its going misty here - Bugger! Cheers, Lucy Remember the transit of venus that happened a couple of years ago? I got a great shot of that, Ill put it on my flickr page tomorrow sometime. Cheers, lucy |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: skipy Date: 03 Mar 07 - 07:04 PM Just got back from the pub! Had to go to a 60th birthday party, they had a feekin disco, 3 hours of shite. Highlight of the evening was seeing the moon as we left! Sky above Grove - clear. Skipy |

Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: JohnInKansas Date: 03 Mar 07 - 06:36 PM It's quite clear here, but the prediction is that the eclipse will be nearly over before the moon rises enough to be seen. We'll have to wait for the next one to get a good view. John |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: MMario Date: 03 Mar 07 - 06:30 PM heavy cloud cover and snowing - so didn't get to see anything. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Hawker Date: 03 Mar 07 - 06:25 PM For those of you who cant see, it looks something like this...... http://www.flickr.com/photos/45752049@N00/409230317/ Just took this in the garden, its a slow release so is a bit blurred, looks more like a giant peach! Cheers, Lucy |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Bainbo Date: 03 Mar 07 - 06:24 PM You know, the moon's always been just a white disc. Now, with the the different colours and shadings, it's the first time I've seen it look three-dimensional. It actually looks like a red globe hanging there - like in a science fantasy paintng of another planet. And as we watched it gradually transform we saw a shooting star. I hope you get to see some of it as it gets dark in the U.S. It's worth watching for. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Andy Jackson Date: 03 Mar 07 - 06:01 PM Lovely red glow here in South Wales. I missed the best bit! |

Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: SussexCarole Date: 03 Mar 07 - 05:03 PM Beautiful clear night here with no light pollution! Only the top half of the moon now visible. Wonderful blue 'halo' around the moon since 9pm |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: RangerSteve Date: 03 Mar 07 - 04:45 PM It's clear here on the east coast. It's supposed to be already in progress by the time it gets dark. I've got the pots and pans ready to bang on to scare the dragon into spitting the moon back up. It's always worked before. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: Bainbo Date: 03 Mar 07 - 04:44 PM Aha! I see a bitten moon arising. Someone's taken a chunk from the bottom left. We're going down to the seafront to watch. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: terrier Date: 03 Mar 07 - 04:39 PM 21:38 The Earth shadow is now very prominent so fingers crossed the clouds stay away. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Lunar Eclipse From: alanabit Date: 03 Mar 07 - 04:39 PM It has started here in Köln. I am watching it with Merle, my elven year old daughter, who is quite impressed. |
