Subject: What is this song?!
From: meatball@wam.umd.edu

I'm looking for a song with the following lyric:

if you imagine the beat as 4/5 seconds the numbers show how the words fit in the beat. (this, sadly...is the best I can do)

1 2 3 4 5 teach (pause) your children well... and later the song switches (i think!) to: teach (pause) your parents well...

it's one of those classic 70s songs. almost a lullaby.

if you know what I'm talking about please email me with the name of the song. a pathetic description, but who knows...mabye I'll get lucky. It's not on this engine, or any other I've tried.

Oh My, it's a Crosby Stills Nash aond Young song. I think ht's just called "Teach Your Children Well"

I'd enter it here, but I only get fragements, such as

You out on the road must have a code that you can live by So teach your children well . . . did you ever ask them why? if they told you,. you would cry, so just look at them and sigh and say you love them, or something like that, Yes, the 70s did strange things to our memories. NO it is NOT that i'm 40.

Just heard this on the radio today. It's one of my favourites. I found it on an official CSN website (sorry forgot to write down the address)

Meatball: please keep in mind, it is much easier and you will get help a lot faster, if you put a few of the lyrics you do know or the name of the song (if you know it)in the thread title. ***smile***

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN by Graham Nash

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good bye.
Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.
And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

Thanks to all. I understand it was a bit tougher given that I knew only a fragment of the line from the song ;)

There is also a descant;

And you of tender years    Can you hear and do you care and
Can't know the fears       Can you see we
That your elders grew by    Must be free to
And so please help          Teach the children
Them with your youth       To believe and
They seek the truth         Make a world that
Before they can die         We can live in

I uploaded my own interpretation of this song eight years ago:
12-string guitar: Teach Your Children Well

The lyrics and chords for it can be found beneath the video in the accompanying information.
