Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Cathie Date: 06 Mar 07 - 05:04 PM What a joint venture - 'Sounds like a boarding party' said Scottie. I have changed my own favourite saying from a cynical February's 'Everyone's got their own agenda' to a more upbeat March one 'That's another one in the bag, Mum'. (this quote from my son after we played Coldplay's 'The Scientist' together - he doesn't tell his friends though). Do any of you have a favourite expression at the moment? I bet Scrump's is ' a pint please' |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: The PA Date: 07 Mar 07 - 03:33 AM According to my 16 year old lad the latest expression is 'get over'. We now seem to have lost the 'yourself' 'it' options. My son doesnt admit that I'm his mom, he tells people he's an orphan. Its probably got something to do with the way I dress when I pick him up from various locations. (we dont have many buses). Crappie trackies, trainers, hair in a mess. Or various items of gardening/cleaning/riding clothes. I only do it to wind him up, its worth it just for the expression on his face. I've even been known to change OUT of decient clothes just to collect him. Who says old people cant have fun !! |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Scrump Date: 07 Mar 07 - 04:04 AM It's a bit early for drinking, even for me :-) Looks like I won't be appearing at the Orange Tree mini-fest thingy then - hope it goes well anyway. I'm on there tonight though, supporting Julie Felix (anyone remember her, or are you all too young?) - it should be OK to mention it here because it's all-ticket and sold out. My support bit went fairly well (considering it was me doing it! :-)), and Julie even thanked me for my contribution from the 'stage' (I know there's not really a stage at the Orange Tree, but you know what I mean!). She was really good and what's more, she's a really nice person too. It was good to see the Ref there, and a few other familiar faces. |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Ross Date: 08 Mar 07 - 11:58 AM Hi Scrump - good show; it must have been quite an experience sharing a stage with a legend I didn't know you didn't have a stage - the 21st will be my first visit I'm looking forward to it There's Redbourn tonight - it's a good guest but I can't spell it PA's very quiet & Cathie is away |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Scrump Date: 08 Mar 07 - 12:12 PM I'm looking forward to seeing you there too Ross. The Orange Tree has more of a fireplace than a stage - you have to be careful in winter not to fall backwards :-) It's an intimate venue, to say the least. I like it for that reason though - it's great to see the likes of Martin Carthy, John Kirkpatrick, or Jez Lowe (and of course, Julie Felix) in a small room like that. |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: The PA Date: 09 Mar 07 - 03:18 AM I'm here keeping an eye on you all. Son's been excluded from school for 5 days for fighting during a rugby match. The story goes that there a drugs in school my son would not get involved and after months on taunting by some others he had a 'conversation' with his year tutor. Thus at the next rugby game he guessed something would kick off, it did literally, so good old Tim got in first and threw the first punch. Unfortunatly the other lad finished up with two black eyes and a broken nose. We have a meeting with his head teacher at 3 today. Just hoping we can get him back into school for Tuesday as its his first GCSE exam, maths. Fighting is totally out of character for Tim but he just wanted to defend himself. I've told him that when you put your head above the parapet you're likely to get shot at, but we support him 100%. |

Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Ross Date: 10 Mar 07 - 07:31 AM Cheers Scrump Crikey PA - I hope everything worked out I visit schools to do building estimates and they still seem to be war zones despite all our touchy/feely mentality It's no wonder society suffers, when all our social skills are learnt in such places I hope Tim's not been too battered for sticking up for himself Have a good weekend everybody Hitchin John - I've sent you an email |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Cathie Date: 11 Mar 07 - 05:08 PM Hi PA. I hope Tim is OK. If he doesn't do the exam the school risks dropping some % in league tables - and they are really important! Ironic story to read after your earlier amusing posts of him disowning you! Did you stretch to lippy and sparkly earrings? |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: The PA Date: 12 Mar 07 - 03:46 AM Hi Gang - The meeting in school resulted in all four of the lads being sent for anger management classes !!! (for a punch up on a rugby field - yee gods what ever next!) The other lads mother is still intent on taking us to court for assult and wants to school to back her. The reason behind the punch-up seems to have taken a back seat (they patrol the school grounds and would know if that type of thing was happening in their school you know - yeh right) and Tim and the battered lad are the best of friends! The Board of Goveners meets this week, and Tim and I have to report back to school on Tuesday next week. I suppose the good news is that he can go in tomorrow for his maths GCSE and back full time on Wednesday. If he doesnt get an A* after all this revision time I'll bash him myself. Cathie - it was so tempting to do a cross between Vickey Pollard and Pat Butcher, but i behaved and popped me suit on. |

Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Scrump Date: 12 Mar 07 - 07:35 AM There was some confusion about the date, because the Wymondley gigs are normally on Fridays. I had to ask him myself, because it was on a list of "Friday" gigs at the Bucks Head, and I pointed out that Friday was the 16th not the 17th. But I am assured that the gig will actually take place on St Patrick's Day itself, Saturday 17th. (I assume the pub must have decided that it would be better to have the gig on Saturday than Friday, on this occasion.) Hope that clarifies things - Saturday 17th, Bucks Head, Tam Lin, and beer (or Guinness)! |

Who could mistake you for a grumpy pensioner Music tonight - 21st Open mic/workshop/call it what you like in the Function room at the Bull, Barton-Le-Clay Mini folk festival at the Orange Tree, Baldock with loads of acts Singers night at Bedford Folk Club - Daleys Social Club, Bedford Redbourn tomorrow at the Cricketers (22nd) - Leon Rosselson - bloody good lyrics |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: The PA Date: 21 Mar 07 - 06:43 AM I had a woman barking at me last night in Sainsbury's carpark cos I parked in the parent and child space, (I am a parent and the big lad was with me) she had ranted on about selfish people and not obeying rules and causing accidents etc etc, I just looked her in the eye and calmly said - do I look like I give a s**t - and walked away. Not the best example for Tim, but when he was small he was in bed at early and this was at 8.30. |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Scrump Date: 21 Mar 07 - 07:01 AM I'm never sure what the rules are about those 'child' parking spaces. I don't think they're like disabled ones, where you would be causing problems for disabled people by parking in them. I think we only parked in one of the 'brat' spaces once when the rest of the car park was full. When our son was a kid, we never had special parking spaces, so I don't see why they should now ;-) Mumble, grumble,... Ross, aren't you going to get all the Barton folk to come to the Orange Tree tonight? |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Ross Date: 21 Mar 07 - 07:21 AM Hi Scrump It's an electric night tonight at the Bull so there's normally only a dozen people - it would be hard to tear them away from their amps and their eclectic mix of blues/rock though They may be some folkies who will come along from the other alternate around the room night Do you want more people? - I'd have thought that the number of performers are going to fill the pub up Is there a large car park? I hate people who give way at roundabouts and junctions when there is nothing coming - grumble |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Scrump Date: 21 Mar 07 - 07:35 AM Yes, I might be the only paid-up punter tonight, as I'm not performing - I'll be on the subs bench ready to stand in for anyone who gets injured (but not if they get sent off!) :-) The car park's not huge, but if it fills up there are spaces in the road so it's not a problem, even when the place is packed (the room only holds about 50 people). I don't understand that last bit, Ross - if there's nothing coming, what do these people give way to? |

Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Cathie Date: 21 Mar 07 - 12:42 PM I would like guitar parking spaces at folk clubs car parks. Music painted on the ground. Some people have a lot of equipment to carry in and out. |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Scrump Date: 21 Mar 07 - 01:08 PM That's a good suggestion, Cathy. That would be much more useful than those 'kids' spaces in supermarket car parks, that we were talking about earlier. |

Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Ross Date: 26 Mar 07 - 08:37 AM Well thing me a thong Say what you will, the countryside is still, the only place where, I would settle down, where spring cleaning has a meaning, out of town Old Jack here The magpies on Redbourn Common were rustling their feathers backwards up to the moon - this means intermittant sunshine with precipitation out of sight Tumble doors falling off - earthqaukes in japan and poor home making |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: The PA Date: 26 Mar 07 - 10:25 AM The countryside is full a wild and unpredictable beasties. On the trip home of Sainsbury's we met a badger, a fox, a muntjack deer and a rabbit. Yesterday I kept meeting gentlemen phesants arguing over who's patch was who's. We have buzzards overhead and a mallard has taken up residence with me chickens (the buzzard thing and the mallard are not connected) - And no Ross, the mallard is the ducky kind with feathers, not the train. Who's old Jack? Let 'em blow on the line, Cathie. |

Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Ross Date: 27 Mar 07 - 05:51 AM Sorry PA - I'm not paying attention We have 'edible dormice' here in the Chilterns - evidently And they have become a plague The French imported them here when they invaded, because they are delicious, and they don't like Shepherd's Pie (the French - not the dormice) Life is becoming unbearable We can't even throw old slaves in the wheelie bins anymore |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: The PA Date: 27 Mar 07 - 06:15 AM why are edible doormouses edible, arnt other mouses edible? When were we france? I like shepherds pie but pickin the bits of wool out of your teeth is a nusance. Shhhhhhhhhhhhh you cant chuck any colour slaves anywhere anymore. Given up text typin too much like hard work. Boss in Buenos Aires, so I'm chained to me desk for the week. |
Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Ross Date: 27 Mar 07 - 07:47 AM Ahh - it does get a bit confusing - perhaps I should have said the Romans - Are you sure you don't work for Fray Bentos? The edible dormouse or fat dormouse (Glis glis) is a small dormouse and the only species in the genus Glis. It was farmed and eaten by the ancient Romans, from which it gains its name. The dormice were kept and raised either in large pits or (in urban surroundings with not a lot of space) in terra cotta containers, not completely unlike contemporary hamster cages. The dormice would finally be cooked and eaten, usually as a snack. To this day, wild edible dormice are consumed in Slovenia, where they are considered a rare delicacy, although their use as food was more widespread before World War II.[1] The edible dormouse lives in continental Europe and has been introduced to the Chilterns of England. In England, the edible dormouse population is concentrated in a 200-square-mile triangle between Beaconsfield, Aylesbury and Luton. Message from Alan Just to remind you that this week at the club we have our monthly session/singaround/playaround (£2 adults children free) and that on Friday, Chris Markwick will take his splendid voice and guitars to The Buck's Head, Stevenage Road Little Wymondly to entertain with an evening of eclectic acoustic/roots songs. FREE entry. Message from Chris Flegg Hi I'm doing a solo gig at the Portland Arms, Portland Street, St Albans, AL3 4RA this Sunday, !st April, 8-30; Fun, frolics and Fullers for all; hope to see you |

Subject: RE: March 07 things at ta Bull, Barton, Beds From: Cathie Date: 29 Mar 07 - 06:22 AM Well - that might not happen Ross. I suddenly remembered on the way home last night that I am holding a murder mystery party tomorrow - one of those 'been in the cupboard for ages' boxes. There's not too much to get ready - just a three course meal, make the house look like a stately home (ideas please? I have candles and tiara so far)and get out the vacuum cleaner. I think guests are staying so I have to sort beds. Oh yes - and iron the tablecloth. Trouble is there's wet washing all over the place - even the stuff on the line has got wet now in the rain. If the tumble drier door hinge doesn't come in the post today, then I'm deffo bu**ered and I will be down the laundrette tonight. |
