Subject: Waterson/Carthy in Boson, who's going?
From: Barry Finn
Date: 05 Mar 07 - 04:38 PM

I just ordered my tickets to see Waterson/Carthy at the Somerville Theater in Davis Square in Somerville. It'll be my first time at this venue, I've been around long enough that, that's a shame. What a lously conflict, I just saw that Joe Hickerson is also on localy on the same evening. In an area like Boston those two will for sure detract from one an other, to bad, I'd like to see them both, oh well. Such hard choices in life.
Anyway any other Mudcatters going?

Barry

Waterson-Carthey is on the 10th, the same day as the Shanty Session. Joe is in Maine on the 11th - Tom

Bill D.: Boson is the common pronunciation (although not the common spelling) for "boatswain".

And I've just noticed that they've corrected the spelling error in the thread title ("Boson" to "Boston"), which completely invalidates my attempt at cheap, smutty humour. Spoilsports!

Hmmmmm...

I get back from the UK on Thursday afternoon. We will be going to see Joe on Sunday. Am I going to be recovered enough to make it to Boston on the Saturday? I think this one is a wait and see jobbie.

I thought they meant the REAL Boston, the one in Lincolnshire that the Pilgrim Fathers set out from, and that the one in the USA was named after.......

How disappointing, I'd have driven the 60 miles.

Boston, Ma, USA. Is there a Somerville & Cambridge next to your Boston too? Sorry about the Boson spelling, never notice it.

Thanks Tom, I got the e-mail & had replyed here but it seems to have disappeared. See you at the shanty session but I'll be leving early to be in Somerville on time.

I've seen the Waterson / Carthy line up in all sorts of variations over the years except for them as the Water Daughters, anyone ever see them in this grouping?

Barry

For anyone else who's going to the show but hasn't heard, they'll be performing in Somerville as a trio... Norma Waterson is not with them because of a broken ankle. That's a disappointment but it should be a fine concert anyway.

I'll be there, bought the tickets aeons ago; I've seen them a number of times, but never in Boston (saw Martin solo at Passim's in Cambridge a few years ago; amazing as ever)...Somerville Theatre is a cool venue, but the seats are teensy weensy, which makes for lots of crossing & uncrossing for my very tall partner, alas. Anyway, my post a few weeks back with a query about Norma's health was prompted by an e-mail notification that she wouldn't be on the bill. Disappointing, but we're still really looking forward to it!

BTW, if you're thinking pre-show dinner and like Indian, definitely check out Diva in Central Square: yum!

Barry - Cambridge (that's the REAL Cambridge, the one all the others are named after, the one with the world's top university!) is maybe 70 or 80 miles from Boston, UK. I guess that's close in US terms, but here in Li'l Ole England we regard it as a long way! :-)

There's no Somerville, but we have a Somersby in Lincolnshire, and a Somercotes - the birthplace of the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson (no relation to Jane Tennison, the lady detective in Prime Suspect. He was real, she's fiction!).

We-e-e-e-ell, they live in the Whitby area, maybe 80 miles from Lincolnshire in the opposite direction to Cambridge - a long way to us Brits! :-)

They just did a great show here in Ithaca -
get ready Boston, you're gonna have a great time.
Yes, Norma is home resting from a disintegrating ankle
(worse than broken) but Martin, Tim, and Liza do a great concert.

Here's another warning - they've sold out of the "product"
that they brought with them. So if you havn't stocked up
on Waterson:Carthy recordings you'll want to visit Amazon
or their web site... or maybe Camsco.

cheers - Pamela

the concert in Rochester was GREAT!!!!

anyone who has a chance to see them on this tour should get their hands on tickets asap.

I sat next to a very couple who had driven from Toronto, Canada - because this was the closest venue to them on the tour and they were able to combine trips to take advantage of the opportunity.

Again.... do not miss them, even lacking Norma, it was a wonderful concert.

I guess it's you & me Desdemona, it'd be nice to meet but I don't know how that could happen unless I wear a yellow hooded sweat shirt. I know, I'll wear a yellow hooded zipper sweat shirt. If you see me, say Hi! Thanks for the tip on the Indian resturant but there'll be no time. We did do Indian last time we were in Davis Sq but there are at least 2 of them so I'm not sure if that was the one.
We're both excited too, espically after hearing the reports from NY. Thanks Chris & Pam, hope to see both of you at Mystic in June.

Well my wife & I had a great time. They were fantastic. All such good musicians & singers & very tight & right on. Choice of material was as expected, better than could be anticipated. I don't know if Tim is related in someway to any of the Watersons, listening to him sing though I'd say his voice is a perfect familt fit. Eliza is a lively lass practicly dancing throughtout her fiddling & stomping out an occasional emphasis by giving a foot delivery with enthusisam & precision. Martin was as always a show all unto himself. The one part missing was Norma. What I really missed was the Waterson family style of unaccompainied harmony singing. But with Norma out of the line up so quickly I'm sure that there's not a thing that could've been done to make up for that and the venue was forcoming enough to make sure that at least I knew when I was buying tickets, so certinally no complaints there. I knew that I wouldn't be getting that part anyway & we were very happy reguardless. The next time, hopefully when Norma recovers we'll catch them again.

Has anyony heard them when the line up is the WaterDaughters? I'd love to catch that arrangement, & does Mike ever perform with them anymore?

I left the sea shanty session early for this concert & the way it turned out I'd have postponed my own wake too, & I really love a party but this was still top shelf.

Happy Barry

Tim is not related in any way.

Mike still sings but not with W:C; has sung as a larger group (as at Sidmouth 2004); with Blue Murder - though he was missing at Cheltenham; and occasionally with Louis Killen.

And then there is the Royal Albert Hall Festival with just about everyone ever associated with the Watersons. Saturday May 12th.

Yes, very splendid--we had SO much fun!

I especially loved the song bout Alvin (NOT a chipmunk)! Such a wonderful band, it's impossible to say enough things about how great they are. We did Norma terribly, though Eliza did quite well on "Ramble Away"...isn't it impressive how wonderfully much we miss her smoky, seasoned and beautiful approach to those slow waltzes...

"Well, I never thought much of that fancy dancin'...
