WORLD BODHRAN CHAMPIONSHIPS INVITES COMPETITORS TO MILLTOWN IN JUNE WITH EU2,500 IN PRIZE MONEY ON OFFER

The World Bodhran Championships in Milltown, County Kerry is inviting bodhran players from around the world to take part in the competitions at the festival in June which will seek to find the best players in the world. The organisers are offering a prize money package of EU2,500 for the winners with specially commissioned trophies worth EU1,000 being presented to the best performers.

The festival, which is being hosted in the mid-Kerry town for the second time from 1st to 4th June 2007 will feature concerts, workshops, street sessions song and dance but the centrepiece will be the competitions to find the best bodhran players in the world. In 2006, Neill Lyons from Dublin was crowned Senior Champion and Colm Phelan from Portlaoise was Junior Champion.

This year, the Bodhran Championships is introducing two new categories. An under-14 category is being introduced for younger players and a solo competition for unaccompanied performers is also being staged for the first time. The latter is open to all age groups and will be a stand alone part of the competitions.

The adjudicators for the competitions will be a panel of renowned bodhran players and the competitons will take place on 2nd and 3rd June in Milltown. The senior winner will be awarded EU1,000 and a specially commissioned trophy. Entry forms and more information are available from +353 (0)66 9765601 or www.worldbodhranchampionships.com

Chief Executive of the Festival, Owen O'Shea said "we are anticipating very large numbers of competitors in June, particularly with two new categories of competition. The response to the event in 2006 has been hugely positive and we are planning a spectacular repeat on the first weekend in June".

Do the competitors have to bring their own hatchets, or are they supplied by the organisers?

Hey only in Ireland eh?
It is almost as if the people over there have their own opinion of what their music should sound like innit.
Silly sods.
Lets hope there are enough catters posting on here to persuade them that they are wrong.

Out of interest, do they have any other instruments there to play along with, or do only bodhrans take part?

Best of luck. I can't come, but I enjoy bodhran playing very much. My husband is a natural at it, and when he plays, he gets compliments and intelligent questions.

Ignore those jealous twits. I suspect they've spent all their discretionary income on booze and now they're mad because they can't afford a bodhran.

Lets hear it for the Bodhran!! probably the most difficult session instrument to play well! most other players can fluff their way through without being noticed, but not the session driver on the Bodhran. Yes I do play and teach.

Well, grumpy al, I'm with you as far as it's being the most difficult session instrument, but after that...? I've yet to come across a bodhran owner who even remotely fits the description of "session driver." Just my bad luck maybe. Good luck with your teaching. Good teaching is what the bodhran world needs most of all. ;-)

I always enjoy turning-up in full costume and getting out my red bodhrans - no matter what my standard I sound better than the expectation.

And I tune them - because I care............

have you heard the one about the difference between a drummer and a gynecologist .........................

Twits are people that complain about bodhrans, banjos and accordions and fiddle players because they're jealous of people that can really play these strange instruments like me.
