Hi there,

do Mudcatters resp. guests see any place for marimba playing in folk music? Any examples?

Manfred

Oops, Greg, I did it !!

Well it *is* a folk instrument, just not an Anglo-American one.

If you play it I'd love to hear you bring it into Sandy Bell's in Edinburgh sometime.

I've got to answer this.

Adam Bushell plays marimba (among other things) in the Brighton based band Duck Soup alongside myself on melodeon and Ian Kearey on guitars and piano. Bookings gratefully accepted. He also plays marimba in the dance band Stocai.

And there's anyone who hasn't yet bought a copy of Duck Soup's eponymous CD - shame on you. It's glorious.

Sorry missed an "if" in the last message - I'd just woken up, or not it seems.

So no "ifs" or even "buts" - buy it.

And just when I was going to show off....

Echo Martin...glorious indeed

Dans too polite to blow his own trumpet (or melodeon!)

The "Humarimba" version is very popular in folk / world music / community arts circles in Australia.
(it's a Marimba slung on belts between 2 people and played by two, or three, people) - it is widespread mainly due to the wonderful innovative musician, Linsey Pollak.

(I think Wikkipedia has some info too ...)

At Glen Echo in Maryland (USA) once a month the Open Band plays for the Contra Dance. Carl Minkus, a folk dancer I knew when I first came to town in 1974 plays the marimba in the band and it's an essential element of the music. He's responsible for all the sparkle you hear. The marimba adds just that much lilt for the dancers. You can hear the band here.
