Subject: RE: Who sings about tugboats? From: GUEST,mg Date: 09 Mar 07 - 03:30 PM I have a song about tugboats. Oh there are some good ones. Once we make the salmon c.d. I want to make a tugboat c.d. with only tugboat songs. Here are the lyrics to mine: Here the foghorn moaning The tugboat The tugboat chains are groaning A land to be alone in Where they cut the tall trees down I don't know where they're going The logs that they are towing The river's overflowing With tall trees they cut down From the mountains to the coast here How they would brag and boast here The river's full of ghosts here Who cut the tall trees down There is a very good song in the back of my head about tugboats..and there was someone at Fisher Poets rom B.C. who had worked on them And surely someone has done something about either Mrs. Annie?? Fossan, who started the Foss Tugboat company and Tugboat Annie was not based on her, but inspired by her. mg |
Subject: RE: Who sings about tugboats? From: ClaireBear Date: 09 Mar 07 - 04:06 PM Bob Bossin in British Columbia ... you've heard me sing his "Towboats" often enough. (I guess that means I should say "me" too, but go to the source instead!) |
Subject: RE: Who sings about tugboats? From: GUEST,mg Date: 09 Mar 07 - 04:19 PM Snap the line tight is a great song that sounds like it should be about tugboats (are towboats the same thing?) but I think it is about a converted halibut boat. Also, the definitive towboat song..Summer Wages by Ian Tyson. mg |
Subject: RE: Who sings about tugboats? From: ClaireBear Date: 09 Mar 07 - 04:24 PM mg, the first line of Bossin's Towboats begins "She's a jackpot tug" -- so I would venture that a towboat is a tugboat. |

Subject: Lyr Add: SUMMER WAGES (Ian Tyson) From: GUEST,mg Date: 09 Mar 07 - 04:35 PM SUMMER WAGES (Ian Tyson) Never hit 17 when you play against the dealer For you know that the odds won't ride with you And never leave your woman alone when your friends are out to steal her Years are gambled and lost like summer wages. And we'll keep rollin' on 'til we get to Vancouver And the woman that I love who's living there It's been 6 long months and more since I've seen her She may be gambled and gone like summer wages. And all the beer parlors all down along Main Street The dreams of the seasons are all spilled down on the floor All the big stands of timber just waiting for falling And the hustlers sitting watchfully as they wait there by the door. So I'll work on the towboats In my slippery city shoes Which I swore I would never do again Through the worst fogbound straits where the cedars stand watching I'll be far off and gone like summer wages. Ah, she's a woman so fine I may never try to find her For good memories of what we had before They should never be changed for they're all that I'll take with me Now I've gambled and lost my summer wages. Years are gambled and lost like summer wages. Copyright Ian Tyson, Slick Fork Music-SOCAN Recorded by Ian and Sylvia, So Much for Dreaming, 1976, Vanguard. Yep, it's on the VICTORY SINGS AT SEA CD, © 1989, and is called "A Hundred Years Ago" as composed by Kotta & Widmann; they used the traditional tune from the shanty "A Hundred years Ago." Subject: RE: Who sings about tugboats? From: GUEST,Texas Guest Date: 09 Mar 07 - 05:54 PM Well, I do a tugboat song from an album I found by a Canadian band called Tamarack - nice album. The song is called, "Tugboat Days" and I enjoy telling the story of the Muskoka lakes and canals as much as I do singing the song. Too bad one song doesn't a show make. Cheers. |

Subject: Lyr Add: A HUNDRED YEARS AGO (Kotta/Widmann) From: Stewart Date: 09 Mar 07 - 06:15 PM A HUNDRED YEARS AGO (Robert Kotta, and Mariide Widmann c 1989) This reworking of a traditional chantey commemorates 100th anniversary of the tugboat Arthur Foss, the flagship of the Washington State Centennial. Arthur Foss is own maintained by Northwest Seaport in Seattle. A hundred years is a very long time Chorus: Oh aye ON A hundred year is a very long time Chorus: A hundred years ago A hundred years on Pacific Shores A hundred years now we're ready for more In Eighteen hundred and eight-nine A tug was launched so strong and fine In Portland town her keel was laid The tug WALLOWA was her name At Columbia bas she towed the ships Then make Alaskan Gold rush trips When she was burned and seemed a loss She was sold, rebuilt the ARTHUR FOSS A-towing logs all up and down To the mills around the Puget Sound In Tugboat Annie, when Hollywood came The tug NARCISSUS was her name In '34 came a diesel screw In '37 she was scuttled by the crew In '41 she was caught by the war With dull gray paint they covered her o'er The last American to sail away From Wake Island in December's gray They took her name for a super tug Renamed THEODORE: still towing logs, Retired and given back her name To northwest Seaport home she came With industry support and volunteer time They make the ARTHUR look so fine In a hundred years she's seen some jobs From sailing ships to super tugs A waterfront lady always changing her name She may be old but she's still in the game Now she's the pride of Washington State And she worked hard to make her great For a hundred years her story's told Of the wind and the rain and the sea so cold Upon blue water she still is found She's the proud old lady of Puget Sound The tugboat Arthur Foss is still (last time I looked) at the south end of Lake Union in Seattle. The city parks wants to get rid of these old ships so they can build their nice tidy "maritime park." But that's another story. Robert Kotta is unfortunately no longer with us (deceased), but Mariide is still going strong singing sea chanties and songs of the sea around Puget Sound and Vancouver, B.C. You should get her to come down to S.F. Cheers, S. in Seattle |

Subject: RE: Who sings about tugboats? From: semi-submersible Date: 10 Mar 07 - 04:00 AM On the west coast, tugs are dedicated towboats, while in the Great Lakes tugs are fishing boats. I got quite confused the first time I heard of a "fish tug." If you can get Bob Bossin to come, you'll be in luck. He brought quite an energy onstage when I saw him doing a political show called "Dr. Bossin's Home Remedy for Nuclear War." His songwriting is excellent. Tugboats (aka Towboats) is fun and memorable. On a benefit CD I heard, Stan Rogers came in with a verse of it (the verse with the cussing). Bossin also did a slightly shortened version of the humourous yarn The Oda G, beginning: There once was a tug called the Oda G. (I swear that this story is true!) From Anchorage to Rupert, clear down to Vancouver, She knew this old coastline as well as I do. |

Couldn't find any tugboat songs on Shanty Jack's first recording MAIDEN VOYAGE (1993) but I bet he sings some. Bubblyrat- There must be a song about the old sidewheel tugs as pictured in "Fighting Temeraire." There is a nice example of a surviving one at the San Francisco Maritime Museum, the Eppleton Hall, a side-wheel tugboat built in England in 1914 to operate on London's River Thames. Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Who sings about tugboats? From: johnross Date: 11 Mar 07 - 07:33 PM If you include river towboats as tugboats, John Hartford wrote a bunch of songs that should be on this list, including several on his albums, "Aereo-Plain" and "Mark Twang". Also, look for the Folkways album, "Bunkhouse and Forecastle Songs of the Northwest" by Stanley Triggs. It includes the original version of "The Oda G." and several other tugboat songs. The album doesn't include "The Wreck of the Green Cove," which is another of his tugboat songs: http://cfmb.icaap.org/content/30.1/BV30-1art5.pdf. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE SWIVEL From: Charley Noble Date: 11 Mar 07 - 08:20 PM Wow! Did I find an interesting website about salvage tugs: click here for website Here's one of their poems: THE SWIVEL (Anon.) Here on the battle-scarred Atlantic There steams a salvage tug gigantic Short-handed and three-fourths reserve She don't get the credit that she deserves We have our radio and bridge gang too The engineers and deck force make up the crew We also carry divers seven told And they bunk down below in the salvage hold United and faithful we all stand together And manage to ride the worst kind of weather Not very scared though mostly alone We'll move with our tows through any war zone At times we wonder what it's like to fight As we dodge the subs during the night At times we are not so lucky of course As we maneuver around an enemy task force Millimeters fly and depth chargers fall Yes, yes, even a tug can be on the ball Now mates on the wagons and flat tops too We have our work but still envy you And like all others we know that it's true The heavy fighting is left to you But when the battle is over and the clean-up begins Fighters stand out and the tug steams in Swivel's the name just a tug But the beaches to her are just like a rug She'll clear them and clear them and even do more And believe me without her you couldn't win the war. Subject: RE: Who sings about tugboats? From: Willie-O Date: 12 Mar 07 - 09:08 AM So, Charley, that's definitely the longest song title I've ever seen. Got the lyrics? ;) "Snap the line tight", (by Vic Bell, recorded by James Keelaghan) is about log salvaging, not tugboats as such, although tugging is certainly part of the game. Summer Wages is one of my all-time favourite songs, but it's not really about tugboats or towboats. The protagonist could be logging, mining or working in the oilpatch for all the difference it would make to the song. Farley Mowat wrote two great books about salvage tugs in the North Atlantic: "Grey Seas Under"(1959 and "The Serpent's Coil"(1961). Lots of good yarns in there. I believe Stan Rogers used one of them as the basis for his song "Wreck of the Athens Queen". Another story Mowat relates is crying out to be made into a song about perseverance. It tells of a single voyage during which a salvage tug made seven Atlantic crossings (roughly) to respond to vessels which needed assistance and never got a line on a single one. I have this vision of an old cabdriver in Halifax on a slow night finally getting a fare after hours of waiting, and the passenger saying, "must be frustrating, all that waiting, eh?", to which the cabdriver responds, "Nah, blink of an eye. Let me tell y'a story from m'younger days, me son..." (you can have that idea for free). But I digress. A great song which is indisputably about the west coast towboat life: "Wreck of the Green Cove", by "Triggs", recorded by Gordon Bok on "Return to the Land". W-O |
Subject: RE: Who sings about tugboats? From: GUEST,mg Date: 12 Mar 07 - 12:29 PM Well, the guy in summer wages works on the towboats..he says so..then the towboat or tugboat goes through the straits of Georgia I presume...hard to tow a mine or an oilfield behind a towboat.which I call tugboats.. Now, weren't towboats originally what was towed in the canals? By hand or mule or whatever? I know it is a term rarely heard by me in the states but often in Canada..mg |

Subject: RE: Who sings about tugboats? From: Charley Noble Date: 12 Mar 07 - 04:47 PM Willi-o- "Snap the Line Tight" features a halibut boat. It's a fine song but I'd veto any points for it as a tugboat song. "Barges"? That's quite a stretch. Tugboats sometimes tow barges but that doesn't make barges tugboats. "Canal boats" are not tugboats either. Oh, give me a tugboat that will carry two, And both will tow, meself and you! Charley Noble |

The tug Wheldale which I crew on was 50 this year. You can find all about this unique tug system on the Sobriety website The Yorkshire Waterways Museum. |

From: GUEST Date: 12 Nov 14 - 05:40 AM Following several TV performances this year, three concerts in the Royal Albert Hall (two televised) for the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the 2014 British Legion remembrance concert, the currently best known song about tugs is probably Jim Radford's 'Shores of Normandy' recounting his trip as a Galley Boy on the deep sea tug Empire Larch in 1944 - towing the Corncob convoy for the Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches. The lyrics are available on a separate thread here on Mudcat. |

Subject: RE: Who sings about tugboats? From: GUEST Date: 06 May 19 - 09:02 AM Jim Radford sings a number of songs about tugs, although he tends not to call them 'tugboats' as he mainly sings about Deep Sea Tugs which are ocean-going ships that go around the world. He did in fact sail as a deckie on a small harbour and inshore tug before going deep-sea in 1944 but his best known song is 'The Shores of Normandy' about the tugs that participated in the Normandy invasion on D-Day. Jim also sings Harry Robertson's 'The Deep Sea Tug' and the 'T124T Song', which is his own composition (T124T were the articles signed by most of the men who served in the wartime RN Rescue Tugs). His song 'How I Learned to Cook' was written for a musical event on the theme of food but is also an amusing (and realistic) account of what life was like for a Galley Boy on an ocean-going tug in WWII. Jim often gives talks about the wartime role of tugs and the T124T Rescue Tugs (based in Campbeltown in Scotland and Harwich on the East Coast) and shows the documentary film 'Mayday - Tugs Of War' which includes interviews with many of the men who crewed these ships. He invariably includes one or two songs in his presentations. |
