I have a song about tugboats. Oh there are some good ones. Once we make the salmon c.d. I want to make a tugboat c.d. with only tugboat songs.

Here are the lyrics to mine:

There is a very good song in the back of my head about tugboats..and there was someone at Fisher Poets rom B.C. who had worked on them

And surely someone has done something about either Mrs. Annie?? Fossan, who started the Foss Tugboat company and Tugboat Annie was not based on her, but inspired by her.

Snap the line tight is a great song that sounds like it should be about tugboats (are towboats the same thing?) but I think it is about a converted halibut boat.

Seems to me there was a long ballad about the history of the old steam tug in Seattle named the Arthur Foss. Yep, it's on the VICTORY SINGS AT SEA CD, © 1989, and is called "A Hundred Years Ago" as composed by Kotta & Widmann; they used the traditional tune from the shanty "A Hundred years Ago."

Well, I do a tugboat song from an album I found by a Canadian band called Tamarack - nice album. The song is called, "Tugboat Days" and I enjoy telling the story of the Muskoka lakes and canals as much as I do singing the song. Too bad one song doesn't a show make. Cheers.

One song? We have five or six now...if you want to stretch it I also have a song about a Pendleton weaver who weaves a coat for her love who I think is a first mate on a tug on the Columbia River. mg

The tugboat Arthur Foss is still (last time I looked) at the south end of Lake Union in Seattle. The city parks wants to get rid of these old ships so they can build their nice tidy "maritime park." But that's another story. Robert Kotta is unfortunately no longer with us (deceased), but Mariide is still going strong singing sea chanties and songs of the sea around Puget Sound and Vancouver, B.C. You should get her to come down to S.F.

Sadly displaced by Hurrican Katrina he now resides with his family in Kansas, I believe.
He tours extensively, so if you spot his name up for a gig near you, go see.
Its a MUST.

On the west coast, tugs are dedicated towboats, while in the Great Lakes tugs are fishing boats. I got quite confused the first time I heard of a "fish tug."

If you can get Bob Bossin to come, you'll be in luck. He brought quite an energy onstage when I saw him doing a political show called "Dr. Bossin's Home Remedy for Nuclear War." His songwriting is excellent. Tugboats (aka Towboats) is fun and memorable. On a benefit CD I heard, Stan Rogers came in with a verse of it (the verse with the cussing).

Bossin also did a slightly shortened version of the humourous yarn The Oda G, beginning:

There once was a tug called the Oda G.
(I swear that this story is true!)
From Anchorage to Rupert, clear down to Vancouver,
She knew this old coastline as well as I do.

Don"t know any British songs about tugs, but I guess there ought to be some ! I read lots of books about them ,though, by Dutch author Jan de Haartog ----they were fascinating !! And Turner"s "Fighting Temeraire " painting shows an early steam-tug, towing the eponymous man-O" War to the breaker"s yard.And I used to work on a tug, called the "WEY" , on the river Thames.Better get writing, I think !!

Couldn't find any tugboat songs on Shanty Jack's first recording MAIDEN VOYAGE (1993) but I bet he sings some.

There must be a song about the old sidewheel tugs as pictured in "Fighting Temeraire." There is a nice example of a surviving one at the San Francisco Maritime Museum, the Eppleton Hall, a side-wheel tugboat built in England in 1914 to operate on London's River Thames.

If you include river towboats as tugboats, John Hartford wrote a bunch of songs that should be on this list, including several on his albums, "Aereo-Plain" and "Mark Twang".

Also, look for the Folkways album, "Bunkhouse and Forecastle Songs of the Northwest" by Stanley Triggs. It includes the original version of "The Oda G." and several other tugboat songs. "Snap the line tight", (by Vic Bell, recorded by James Keelaghan) is about log salvaging, not tugboats as such, although tugging is certainly part of the game.

Summer Wages is one of my all-time favourite songs, but it's not really about tugboats or towboats. The protagonist could be logging, mining or working in the oilpatch for all the difference it would make to the song.

Farley Mowat wrote two great books about salvage tugs in the North Atlantic: "Grey Seas Under"(1959 and "The Serpent's Coil"(1961). Lots of good yarns in there. I believe Stan Rogers used one of them as the basis for his song "Wreck of the Athens Queen". Another story Mowat relates is crying out to be made into a song about perseverance. It tells of a single voyage during which a salvage tug made seven Atlantic crossings (roughly) to respond to vessels which needed assistance and never got a line on a single one. I have this vision of an old cabdriver in Halifax on a slow night finally getting a fare after hours of waiting, and the passenger saying, "must be frustrating, all that waiting, eh?", to which the cabdriver responds, "Nah, blink of an eye. Let me tell y'a story from m'younger days, me son..." (you can have that idea for free).

But I digress. A great song which is indisputably about the west coast towboat life: "Wreck of the Green Cove", by "Triggs", recorded by Gordon Bok on "Return to the Land".

Well, the guy in summer wages works on the towboats..he says so..then the towboat or tugboat goes through the straits of Georgia I presume...hard to tow a mine or an oilfield behind a towboat.which I call tugboats..

Now, weren't towboats originally what was towed in the canals? By hand or mule or whatever?

I know it is a term rarely heard by me in the states but often in Canada..mg

"Barges"? That's quite a stretch. Tugboats sometimes tow barges but that doesn't make barges tugboats.

"Canal boats" are not tugboats either.

Hey Charley Noble !! I just spent an hour looking at the ships and the men on the USS Swivel tugboat site that you found ! I think it is absolutely fascinating !! I guess Hollywood will never make a war film about those guys, but what tales they had to tell----I was amazed ! Thankyou, Charley.

Harry Robertson's first song (??) was called "Deep Sea Tug" and was based on his experiences around the end of the Second World War on a naval tug working around northern Scotland.

It has been published somewhere - "Penguin Book of Sea Songs" seems to ring a bell.

OK....we in the northwest are going to make a tugboat CD. It has been declared. Northwest people and tugboats first and foremost, others as room allows. Possibly can submit something prerecorded if it conforms to the standards to be set by sound engineer..but it will be up to him. mg

There will soon be a tug song on the Yorkshire Garland website which will be completely downloadable. It is called The Trip and it's all about a day in the life of a Tom Pudding tug on the Aire nad Calder Canal in Yorkshire. It was written by Gezz Overington c1970. The tug Wheldale which I crew on was 50 this year. You can find all about this unique tug system on the Sobriety website The Yorkshire Waterways Museum.

Mary, that song is "Towboats," which was written by Bob Bossin as I noted above and recorded by nis band, Stringband. (Chanteyranger did end up getting Mr. Bossin down for the tugboat festival, and a good time was had by all.)

You are correct; that was Stan Rogers singing the third verse; in fact, I believe that was the first time he was ever recorded.

Following several TV performances this year, three concerts in the Royal Albert Hall (two televised) for the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the 2014 British Legion remembrance concert, the currently best known song about tugs is probably Jim Radford's 'Shores of Normandy' recounting his trip as a Galley Boy on the deep sea tug Empire Larch in 1944 - towing the Corncob convoy for the Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches. Jim Radford sings a number of songs about tugs, although he tends not to call them 'tugboats' as he mainly sings about Deep Sea Tugs which are ocean-going ships that go around the world. He did in fact sail as a deckie on a small harbour and inshore tug before going deep-sea in 1944 but his best known song is 'The Shores of Normandy' about the tugs that participated in the Normandy invasion on D-Day. Jim also sings Harry Robertson's 'The Deep Sea Tug' and the 'T124T Song', which is his own composition (T124T were the articles signed by most of the men who served in the wartime RN Rescue Tugs). His song 'How I Learned to Cook' was written for a musical event on the theme of food but is also an amusing (and realistic) account of what life was like for a Galley Boy on an ocean-going tug in WWII.

Jim often gives talks about the wartime role of tugs and the T124T Rescue Tugs (based in Campbeltown in Scotland and Harwich on the East Coast) and shows the documentary film 'Mayday - Tugs Of War' which includes interviews with many of the men who crewed these ships. He invariably includes one or two songs in his presentations.

I sorta thought that the "Mary Ellen Carter" was a tugboat. Course, I guess she coulda been any of several different kinds of boats, actually.
