Subject: BS: apologies From: Irish sergeant Date: 10 Mar 07 - 10:22 AM Greetings all: I just wanted to apologize for not being around. I'm in college now (at 51 years old) and have a nurderous course load this semester in addition to working full time. (Astronomy, French and Statistics)I promise to try harder. :~) Neil (AKA Irish Sergeant) |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: Desdemona Date: 10 Mar 07 - 10:45 AM HA! *I'm* in college as well (at 42 years old, 3 kids, etc.); innit a gay, mad whirl?? How are you coping? For the most part I manage to keep my head above water, and I really love the intellectual stimulation, and I think I appreciate the experience a great deal more than I did at 20. Even if your "real" work keeps you mentally engaged (I managed the education department of a museum for years before this), there's something very salutary about having different approaches, interpretations, etc., required of you; it's good to keep those muscles flexed. Of course, having a supportive partner to help keep the house running, (other people's) homework supervised, and meals on the table goes a long way to making it possible! Best of luck; it's nice to know that others are as crazy as I am... ~D |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: Janie Date: 10 Mar 07 - 10:49 AM Good on both of you! I went back to graduate school full-time at age 40. Found myself kinda wishing I had waited to go to undergraduate school until I was motivated enough to get the most out the experience! Janie |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: Desdemona Date: 10 Mar 07 - 10:53 AM I think that the whole "paying for it myself" aspect has played a certain role in my increased motivation! ;~) ~D |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: wysiwyg Date: 10 Mar 07 - 10:57 AM I accept your apology. Make amends! (By being here more.) ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: Stilly River Sage Date: 10 Mar 07 - 10:57 AM I finished my MA in English at 44. I wasn't alone in being an older "non-traditional" student at my university. I think you do get a lot more out of it when you go back later and (re)experience the university world. (When I applied I was asked for documentation of all sorts of inoculations--measles, mumps, chicken pox, rubella--I had to tell them "sorry, I caught all of those. No immunizations like that when I was a kid." I could furnish a date for my smallpox vaccination, but they weren't interested, they don't give them any more.) SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: dianavan Date: 10 Mar 07 - 11:35 AM Irish Sargeant - Good luck. I, too, was a mature student and have never regretted the decision. Look out for that statistics course. It was the only course I really struggled with. |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: MMario Date: 10 Mar 07 - 02:40 PM hey guy! You gotta check in more often. - - my niece you used to run into at re-enactments - is cooking up baby number three. . . her oldest will be five in April, can you believe it? |

Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: Irish sergeant Date: 10 Mar 07 - 09:22 PM Thanks All French is fun and astronomy wouldn't be bad if we had the weather to actually get more than a cursory glance at the heavens. Statistics, how do I say this politely/ Statistics sucks! I'm going to major in Writing with a stroing minor in history MMArio, Tell Gabrielle I said hello! I haven't seen her ina few years I think the oldest was like two. Still in the crayon eating stage Susan, How are you and yours? And agin all of you, thanks for your kind wishes. Neil |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: catspaw49 Date: 10 Mar 07 - 10:22 PM Well geeziz Neil........I saw that handle and had to check the date. Glad to see you around and I too congratulate you on the college bit but also will tell you that the idea of going back to a formal school setting at age 57 scares the livin' shit outta' me! I have bad dreams about that.....SERIOUSLY!!! You're a better man than I am Gunga Din. Tkae just a minute now and then to check in and post a few thoughts, jokes, or whatever.....Keep us updated! Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: open mike Date: 11 Mar 07 - 03:56 AM i am a 53 year old teeny bopper too. i mean i am a college student.. in the audio and video production department and remote t.v. broadcast class. some times people tell me they see me on t.v. when the studio interviews i have recorded are broadcast. |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: Rapparee Date: 11 Mar 07 - 09:29 AM Get ahold of "A Cartoon Guide to Statistics." It'll help, although NOTHING makes it ha-ha whoopee fun unless you're, well, inclined THAT way. I got my MS at 32 and I've taken courses, graduate and just-for-the-hell-of-it ever since. Don't you find all the "traditional" students to be awfully "young"? I did. |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: wysiwyg Date: 11 Mar 07 - 09:38 AM Aren't geezer college kids called "non-traditional" students? How's that gonna square with "What is Trad" and "What is Folk"? No worries, Neil-- go ahead and infect those wet-behind-the-ears students with folk music when you get a chance! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: Irish sergeant Date: 11 Mar 07 - 12:55 PM I do all of my studies on line but I'm "infecting" these 20 somethings with folk music and Swing era French loves songs in my French class and of course with my paraboia. I just love college! LOL Neil |
Subject: RE: BS: apologies From: alanabit Date: 11 Mar 07 - 02:51 PM I am the same age as you Neil. I did my degree twenty something years ago, but like you, I had worked many years before I went to college. I think it motivated me: I was certainly grateful to be there - and that made a difference. Good luck with it and let us know how you are getting on. |
