It seems to me that the camping fees for the Moor & Coast August Folk week are expensive, As I read it, it is £10.00 per night and then £2.00 per person per night, bringing it to £14.00 per couple per night, with no electric hook-up. Has any one else got a comment?

I don't actually call that expensive John.

Camping space within easy walking distance of Whitby Harbour is worth it's weight in gold .... don't knock it.

To explain again about the price of camping during Folk Week...

The Moor & Coast Festival is a "not for profit festival". All monies raised are put back into the festival to promote live music, (based in the folk tradition), in and around Whitby. No one is paid and all give up their time for free...

The opportunity arose last year that the Community College grounds became available to us during Folk Week. We consulted with the Folk Week organisation and they gave us their blessing to use the site to raise funds for the continuation of promoting music in the town, by providing a temporary campsite for the week. This we are repeating again this year.

The college make most of the money charged for camping, this goes into their student fund for extras not provided by the local authority. The rest goes towards the festival for music, song and dance.

It is "win, win, win situation", with campers getting a good site during folk week, the college students getting a large injection of funds and the Moor & Coast Festival being able to remain financialy viable

The site was well received last year and bookings are going well for this year...

I hope this clears up any queries people may have... If they wish to talk to me in more detail then I can be contacted through our website...

Glen Rogers
Moor & Coast
Festival Director

I have just been watching the local news which had a feature on the refurbished Whitby Youth Hostel. Situated at the top of te Abbey steps, it could provide a viable option for people not wanting to camp.

It really did look impressive.

Yeah, just seen probably the same item. It seems the hostel has 100 beds, & they have en-suite facilities. Could offer a number of festival-goers a place.

I would say that advance booking is likely to be vital, as school parties often make big inroads on the accommodation available. For those unfamiliar with the town I would also mention that the hostel is at the top of the Church Stairs [all 199 steps of 'em] so this is best suited to those able to tackle the steps at least once a day, or those prepared to pay for a taxi.

That's excellent news for the young and fit! I remember when the Folk Week campsite was behind there on the cliffs. You made sure that you took everything you needed for the day, no mean feat in Whitby with its somewhat changeable weather!

Maggie and I will be at M&C Satruday to Monday.

Unfortunately, we won't be there after all. Both daughters have exams and studying to do in May (so we can't wangle the time off from school), so coming up to Whitby during the school Easter break instead. Apart from the Whitby Folk Club which I beleive is now on a Thursday, are there any other evenings of Folk in April?

Here is hoping you all have a very nice time, and I will just have to make it next year instead.

The White Hart Folk Club at Mickleby ( about 8 miles north of Whitby) is every Saturday night. A very friendly and welcoming club. Highly recommended.

I believe that there is a session/club in the Tap and Spile on a Sunday.

If you want to stray rather further down towards York you would be more than welcome any Wednesday in April (or any month of the year) at the Thompsons Arms, Flaxton 8.30 till whenever - just off the A64 about 10 miles north of York.

It's a mixed singaround/session - if you want to know more you could ask Tim the Twangler or Paul Young (who still occasionally visits when he can from Newcastle) or PM me

Tap & Spile Sunday

The first In Last out Tuesday

Whitby Folk Club Thursday

Thanks Nutty & Carol

Nick
I would love to have come along, but it is just a bit too far. I was looking for Whitby, as my family & I can have something to eat, and I can sneak off to the folk nights, whilst my wife and daughters do something else. They wouldn't go to singarounds/sessions.

Sunday night at the Tap IS NOT a folk club... it's an open session, run very informally, with mainly singers, a bit of music and a sprinkle of poetry... not a bad night though!!!

I can camp it up with the best of them!!
However I don't stay on the campsite. Glen finds me accommodation...sometimes the couch in his flat...though last year I was treated to the gracious hospitality of Lady Aelfleda(I think that's spelt right)...great digs, but a gruelling climb in the early hours of the morning!
geoff
ps why do you ask?

Geoff
Just wondered. We always book a house or cottage (mind you we stay for the week). In fact we booked one just by Aelfleda's 2 years ago. I know what you mean about the climb LOL. I always felt the worst was the sexual nature of the seagulls early in the morning on the roofs up their :-)

So you were with Aelfleda and a very good friend of mine from 40 years ago Barbara Guise. She always stays with Aelfleda.

I spoke with Angie H on Sunday, who confirmed that husband Mick is talking of moving the Folk Club to Thursdays to avoid a clash with the meetings of the Friendship Club's committee. She reckoned the change was likely, but it hadn't gone ahead at that point. I will keep an eye open, and try to report back.

The T&S Sunday session is usually run by Derek Elliott.

I don't think any of these is a non-smoking place yet, but two other pubs have switched this month alone, and with the legal stub-out day looming I imagine that more may do so any time.
