From: kerryguy7

Hi folks!
I just wanted to introduce myself and ask anyone else here if they are new members as well?
I am just learning the acoustic guitar and I would appreciate any advice and encouragement from any of you "more accomplished" members/musicians out there! (Trust me...that is ALL of you!)
I am 55 years old so learning anything new at this point in my life is a bit more of a challenge BUT I am looking forward to mastering this guitar...at least a 'we bit!
Thanks and nice to meet all of you folks!

Tom

I'm not a newbie..been around 6/7 years...Welcome from me.I don't think there's an easy way to play guitar..    Patience an' practice etc and lots of it!! Don't give up...Come back here often for advice and support...they're mostly good folk here. What style are you wanting to play?

                     Best Regards ...Spot

Welcome to Mudcat, Tom. This is the place to get any info or advice. There is no shortage of 'expert' opinions (some more expert than others) around here! :-)

It would be worth your while learning how to use the 'search' and 'filter' facilities, as a lot of your questions may already have been answered in the past. Don't let that stop you asking away, though, if you need any advice, etc.

Welcome to the 'Cathouse Tom. It's a good place to hang out and there are a lot of very good musicians here to answer your questions.

I'm not a newbie either - been here round about five years, but it seems a lot longer!

That is the BEST statement of reality here I've ever seen (thanks, Scrump!). Likewise, if someone answers a question with something like: "Been discussed a million times;" it's most likely that's meant as an encouragement to plumb Mudcat's treasures, and not as a dismissal of the question.

Another real good thing to keep in mind is this equally brilliant bit (from JimLad): ... we're not writers. Much of what we may consider to be, constructive criticism, gets misinterpreted, taken out of context and blown out of proportion.... You will find many examples of the various posters going back to explain "That's not what I meant" and probably many more cases where the individual has left the room (sometimes for days) not even knowing that he/she has offended someone.....

So welcome, and take it light!

~Susan

Hi Tom, and welcome to Mudcat.

As far as finding resources for guitar learning, I'd start by browsing through these threads and finding tips that suit your level - most of the content is about acoustic guitar - and there are links to other threads at the top and throughout.

Tips for pickers part 1

Tips for pickers part 2

Tips for pickers part 3

There isn't as much talk now at Mudcat about guitar picking as there was a few years back, probably due in part to the death of Rick Fielding, an avid poster and guitar teacher (among many other talents). However, several of the posters in these threads are still active, for example M.Ted, John Hardy, Mooh, and Mark Clark. If you post a new thread with a guitar question, you'll get responses.

Good luck, Marion

If you want to see a forum where newbies REALLY get jumped on, try lurking for a bit at turbobricks.
