Subject: Lyr Add: LA CUCKOO-CARACHA (Homer & Jethro)

Indiana University has the sheet music, described thus:

SOUTH OF THE BORDER (DOWN MEXICO WAY)
Words and music: Michael Carr & Jimmy Kennedy.
New York: Shapiro, Bernstein & Co., 1939.

You can hear the following short parody at The Internet Archive. It seems to come from a live radio or TV show. I don't think there was ever a commercial release of this version. Perhaps H&J never wrote more than this one verse. The tune is SOUTH OF THE BORDER, while the title is a pun on LA CUCARACHA.

LA CUCKOO-CARACHA
As sung by Homer & Jethro.

South of the border, down Mexico way,
We drank tequila one night, got into a fight, and lost our pay.
Drank some of the water. What more can we say?
We cuckoo-caracha'd the rest of the day.

OK pardner.... this is from memory, and I'm not sure how to input songs correctly. Perhaps I should be leaving it for more experienced posters, but here it is. Do you know the "Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys" version? Leon Rausch sings up a storm, and Bob is always entertaining.

SOUTH OF THE BORDER

South of the Border, down Mexico way,
that's where I fell in love when stars above came out to play.
And now as I wander, my thoughts ever stray
South of the Border, down Mexico way.

She was a picture, in old Spanish lace
just for a tender while I kissed the smile upon her face
for it was fiesta, and we were so gay
South of the Border, down Mexico way.

Then she smiled as she whispered "manana", never dreaming that we were parting
and I lied as I whispered "manana", for our tomorrow never came.

South of the Border, I rode back one day.
There in a veil of white, by candlelight, she knelt to pray.
The mission bells told me that I mustn't stay
South of the Border, down Mexico way.

Ay! Ay! Ay! Ay!
Ay! Ay! Ay! Ay!
Ay! Ay! Ay! Ay!
Ay! Ay! Ay! Ay!
