Subject: RE: Recording of Norwegian children's songs? From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Apr 99 - 02:49 AM Say, do you know where I can get some more info about a scrimshaw piece JFK made on that island after PT109 had gone down? Or is there possibly a song about that too? Seems to me I heard it done by Pete Seeger but it was during the blacklist and he was using a different name. Possibly also done by Curtis and Loretta on a recent release. It was also a hit for the St.Louis Aquarium Choir doing a close harmony during their Kosovo Benefit Concert to drive down gas prices for refugees and provide kazoos to anyone requesting lyrics and titling their thread "Lyrics Needed." Between our two posts, that oughta' get this sucker movin' along...Personally, I gotta' be up in a little over 2 hours...so I'm going to bed. Think we (me, you, and Banj) oughta' apologize to Shambles for kidnapping his thread? ......not to mention this one and several others!!!!????!!! catspaw |
Subject: RE: Recording of Norwegian children's songs? From: LEJ Date: 07 Apr 99 - 02:31 AM Which reminds me of the time I was returning from the music store, having just traded my Martin for a Takamine, when I saw two Norwegian kids shouting and pointing at something in the weeds by the side of the road. Seems they had been tracking possums using a bent hickory stick, when they stumbled upon a rare piece of Polynesian Scrimshaw in the bushes. Wow! Talk about serendipity. Gotcha Cats! |

Subject: RE: Recording of Norwegian children's songs? From: Sandy Paton Date: 06 Apr 99 - 11:52 PM Just wanted all of you Mudcatters to know that everything worked out well regarding this request. Thanks to "Bassen," in Norway (I think), the CD of childrens' songs is being obtained and sent to the woman who wanted it for her mother. Somehow, I knew this community would come through, and "Bassen" certainly did. I'm very grateful. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Recording of Norwegian children's songs? From: Sandy Paton Date: 30 Mar 99 - 01:31 PM Thank you, Bassen! I will forward your note to the woman who wanted the information and will work out a way to get the record for her. If it comes to that, we may well ask you to pick up a copy for us, as you so kindly offered to do. I'll get back to you in a personal note or by refreshing this thread. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Recording of Norwegian children's songs? From: bassen Date: 30 Mar 99 - 02:57 AM Sandy Turns out there aren't that many recordings of traditional children's songs in Norway either, at least not recordings comprised entirely of songs that would be recognizable to someone who emigrated that long ago. I've located one good anthology though: V†re beste barnesanger (our best children's songs) Grappa records GRCD 3004 Various artists including Kari Bremnes who sang with Tom Russell on his new CD "The Man from God Knows Where"
Most likely not available in the US, but maybe a local dealer could contact Grappa? Grappa records or contact me directly and we can try to work out something, I can go down and buy the CD tomorrow and send it. If all else fails try downloading some of the 30 children's songs of mediocre quality at www.libero.no/html/umeny29.htm 30 free traditional children's songs courtesy of Libero diapers! bassen

Subject: RE: Recording of Norwegian children's songs? From: bassen Date: 29 Mar 99 - 02:44 AM Sandy That's a tough one. I just checked the largest online recordstore in Norway - www.akersmic.no - and didn't get a single hit on children's songs (barnesanger). I'll get my record and book store working wife to check the catalogues, but it's not inconceivable that a recording of preWWII children's songs from Norway is more readily available in the US. Check one of the scandinavian cultural centers in the midwest. Hold on, just remembered that someone did record some old Margrethe Munthe songs not too long ago. I'll get back to you. bassen |
Subject: Recording of Norwegian children's songs? From: Sandy Paton Date: 29 Mar 99 - 02:23 AM Folks, I need your help. I just got a catalog request from a woman who is looking for a cassette of Norwegian children's songs for her mother. Her mother was born in Norway and came to this country after WWII. She is now 70. The woman who wrote to me is terminally ill and can't get out to look for a recording on her own. I've had no luck on the 'net, but I'm not much good at surfing. I really would like to help this woman find the music she wants to give to her mother. Have any of you any suggestions, or do you know of a recording that would be appropriate for her? Thanks, all. Sandy |
