Tech: Address bar missing from home page

We use MSN as our home page. Recently, the address bar disappeared and we haven't been able to figure out how to restore it. Any ideas? Thanks.

What browser? That is usually the problem, rather than the site. There are menu items in most browsers to show or hide the various bars...often with a 'hot key' combination. You might have just turned it off.

There's another thread on this, started yesterday. Check that one out.

(I 'think' it's a slightly different problem, SRS)

Internet Explorer is the browser in question.

go to the top where it says 'view' and click on that. In the drop-down menu, the address bar should be listed...see if it is checked...if not, check it.

(that's under 'toolbars' in the menu)

(at MSN.com, all I see at both top & bottom is a search bar)

You may have just gotten switched to the "View Full Screen" mode. F11 is supposed to toggle you between full screen and normal view, but sometimes seems balky about making the switch. If F11 doesn't work try an Alt-V (keyboard command for the "View" menu) and click on the "Full Screen" at the bottom of the menu list.

Address bar is checked and F11 works, but still no address bar. Under the view/toolbars, the only item in bold is "text labels", all the others are shown in a ghost like text.

Still might not hurt to combine these threads.

Options being greyed out is normally associated with Win98 on home systems where someone has set user profiles, but discovered that they can just hit 'esc' on the login in dialogue to bypass the login (possibly because they forgot the password).

As no user profile is loaded, many 'features' (including email settings) don't behave as expected.

Forgotten passwords aren't a problem, because you can start up in MSDOS and delete the .pwl files! Next time you reboot, you ill be prompted for a new password.

Win 2000 and XP are much more secure, but WinME is a bit flaky.

If you're on the same version of IE that I'm on, you maybe able to see a dropdown menu that says Tools. If so, try clicking Full Screen. F11 should achieve the same thing, so if this doesn't work then Full Screen Mode isn't your problem. But it's worth a try.

Which version of IE are you running, oldhippie?

I lost mine the other day. It was checked in 'view toolbars' but a little box labelled 'Address' was visible on the 'standard buttons' bar. I found that I had to uncheck the 'lock toolbars' option in 'view' and drag the little 'Address' box down so that the address bar reappeared and then checked the 'lock toolbars' again. Maybe this will work for you.

As Stewie suggests, the Address Bar can be dragged off the screen, and if the "lock toolbars" choice is checked you can't drag it back.

In IE6, and possibly earlier versions, there is also an option to Hide Address Bar. Unfortunately, the article I found that tells you how to hide it doesn't mention how to unhide it.

You need to know specifically what version of Internet Explorer you're using. To find that, click "Help" and then "About Internet Explorer."

For Internet Explorer 6 ONLY, there's a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

The Internet Explorer Address bar is missing KB842903.

The article suggests a fairly simple change in settings, but I don't have an IE6 running and the items listed that you should click are not present in my IE7. Instructions to include unlock (uncheck) the Lock Toolbars option, and if the Address bar was just dragged off somewhere it should come back at least to where you can drag it back from one edge or another of the screen.

If the changes in settings don't repair the situation for you, the article recommends deleting a line in the registry.

I'd recommend that you find the article, print it so it's in front of you, and follow the instructions pretty carefully. Using regedit isn't all that difficult, but there are lots of things that look almost alike and you need to be careful that you find exactly the right place to do what's needed.

I don't find an option to hide the Address Bar in IE7, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. You'd likely have noticed if IE7 was downloaded by Automatic Updates or otherwise, since IE7 looks quite a bit different than IE6 and earlier.

I'm running version 6.0 I have the 'address' box, but I do not have a 'lock toolbars' option in view. I'll try the MS knowledge base article instructions.

oh -

The lock toolbars option should come up if you just right-click anywhere (in a blank space) on any toolbar.
