Mouldy's husband killed in Russian mine

20 Mar 07 - 12:53 PM (#2002236)
Subject: Mouldy's husband killed in Russian mine
From: Tig

Just had a phone call to say the British engineer killed in the Syberian mining explosion was Mouldy's husband Ian. She asked me to let other Mudcats know.

Lots of love and hugs go to her and her family.

I am so profoundly sorry, to you and all of your family. Nothing prepares us for any loss, expected of least of all sudden especially the loss of a loved one you held so close.

I've just recently lost my father, and the sadness and complete desolation is hard to bear, but love each minute you had, each moment to cherish, love your memories and hold them close. They help. The desolation and sadness eases day by day, and it's true, you get better at it. Cry, shout, laugh and talk.

Your family, dearest ones, and friends are the ones who will help you through this now. It is a great support, though hard to deal with others emotions at this difficult time. Stand tall, be proud.

I was reading this story the other day, thinking of the horror for all the families involved, and how close to home it comes when there was someone from Britain involved. Little realising the closer connection to this little web community. I am holding you and all the other families involved in my thoughts.

Please take care, and my sincere sympathies to you and yours, from one who has been going through another difficult journey to another.

Ella who is Sooze.

Yes it has been too long since I dropped in. Life sorta got in the way

Many, many thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. We're still in a state of absolute shock. It's very surreal because he wasn't due home until the end of April, so in some sense we don't feel anyone missing from the house - yet.
However he will hopefully be home tomorrow night (friday) but he will be 4 miles away, not here. That is when I think reality will kick in. There are all sorts of beaurocratic and legal things to be done, such as translating the death certificate from Russian into English, and hoping that the coroner accepts the translation. Anyway...we are hoping that the funeral will be on 30th March, barring delays.

Ian always said that he wouldn't live to old age...he didn't want to: He wanted to burn out and not fade away. He was a true "work hard, play hard" man, and tried to enjoy himself in whatever he was doing, as often as he could. He ran every Sunday with the Moscow Hash House Harriers, and really entered into the spirit of the "Drinking Club with a Running Habit"!
I have been going through the usual andexpected not sleeping, not eating, bursting into tears etc. My family (including my new son in law, and daughter in law-to-be)are being wonderful, fielding phone calls and visitors. The Ducks popped in to see me yesterday, which was unexpected and lovely. Our Rector, an old friend, (I'm one of his churchwardens)has got the diocesan press office mobilised, which has taken no end of unwelcome pressure off us as we try to get our heads round what has happened.

We are all very aware that we are only one family of many that is going through this. Ian was 1% of the fatalities, and although the bottom has fallen out of our world, so it has for the other 99%. I have also been told that the people of Russia are posting messages of condolence to us on the Ysvestia newspaper. These are to be translated and sent to us, and we are going to reply via the paper ourselves. I am in the fortunate position of having a husband with pension and life insurance. What will these families have? If (and it is a big if) there is a fund for this disaster, we are somehow going to send any monies we receive (hopefully via Ian's company's Moscow office) to it. I also have a friend in our village who has contacts through the newly formed hospice movement in the area, and he is putting feelers out via them. If nothing is forthcoming, we may donate monies to the Red Cross. Ian was a traveller, both in his work and leisure time, and I'm sure that he would approve of help being given, if not to Kemerovo, to an organisation that does such valuable work when tragedy strikes all around the world. I already donate to them, so that can go direct from me. We await any details that can be found.

Once again, so many thanks from us all for your kind thoughts, and I will drop in more often!

Andrea

Thank you, Andrea and Ruth for taking the time to come here and share with us. Somewhere, I think it was Big Mick, who posted an old saying about sorrow shared being halved. I am sure it doesn't feel that way right now, but please come and "ramble on" all you need to and I hope that the sharing will help lessen the sorrow as time goes by.

Your Ian sounds as if he was a remarkable person, of a remarkable family. It is good to know he has left you in a position of being able to help others. How beautifully your souls shine through in your caring about others and wanting to help them.

Thank you, again, for sharing with us.

The latest we have is that he will arrive at Heathrow about 6.30pm Saturday. Expected arrival up here about 1am, after the formalities this end. There is a guy who has gone out there to accompany Ian home, and who is working himself into the ground at the moment. The poor man is nearly dead on his feet.
It appears there IS a fund set up. Ian's company are making investigations about the best way to transfer money to it via their Moscow office. The company are also compiling a file of letters of condolence that they have received. A representative will be bringing it to the funeral.

Just had a nice chat with Tig on the phone. I have come down with a cold (immune system has bottomed out, I suppose) and she's been mother hen-ing me!

I think under these circumstances, mother hen-ing is definitely a Good Thing. There are times when we really need that, and this is definitely one of those times.

Andrea, one of the best things I have found to strengthen the immune system, and also to ease the symptoms of a cold, is astragalus. The one we have here in Oz is called AstraForte. I get it from a health food shop. You only need small amounts of it - I like to add hot water to AstraForte Liquid and sip it. I can feel it doing me good. It just might help you a bit if you can get it over there.

I can also recommend the herbal flower essences, like Emergency Essence, which also might help. It has worked for me in the past when I was under stress.

Signing off again now as i have a docs appointment (the old blood pressure) and I have to get going.

Once again, thanks to all of you for your support - and humour.
The deep black humour kicked in here not long after I got the news - the bugger always said he wanted to go out with a bang, and he never was one to do things by halves!

Yesterday was a good day for me. Today? well we'll see.

Hi Andrea,

Hope the blood pressure was ok.

Black humour was one of the devises that helped me when my dad died, its strange the things that you can laugh about in the middle of a tragedy, perhaps its the body's coping mechanism. "Laughing, crying its the same release" I think thats part of a song, but its about right.

If you need to talk "bollocks" you know that there are many here prepared to listen - and probably understand somewhat.

Hope you have a better nights sleep,

love

Managed a reasonably good night thanks to a couple of little white pills and a half of Hambleton ale. The cough that decided to start last night did its best, but I slugged some of the old Potter's and it did the trick. I had my first foray into the social world last night for an hour, and went to the Jemmy Hirst in Rawcliffe. Some of you will know the place and what a friendly and gently welcoming place it is. With an ex police officer landlady, you are in very good hands at a time like this. The son of one of my friends from church is a regular, and he was straight in for a cuddle and a kiss, despite me probably moving around in a viral fog. I DID warn him ....

Ian will arrive at Heathrow this evening. Mark Mounde, who has been with him all the way, is then being kicked home to his wife in Doncaster before he joins Ian in the real sense! A couple of the company directors are then going to escort him north. The Russians have already, apparently "done the business". He has been embalmed, and they have provided him with a top-range coffin. We don't know what it's like, but Mark says he's seen how much it cost! Pity it'll be burnt, really.
Reality will hit me tomorrow evening when Mark is coming with a Jiffy bag sized amount of Ian's effects: presumably the stuff he had with him at the mine. More than likely this will include his rings, if they've been able to remove them. Stand by for the hysterics.

Otherwise I have been writing a letter to go to people I haven't yet been able to contact, and also sending out details of the disaster fund, to which donations can be made by using the nominated corresponding banks and following the route through to the fund account.
If anyone feels inclined to do anything, pm me with your email address and I'll send you the details. There are 2 routes, one for dollars and one for euros.

Thanks everyone.

We met with the guy who escorted him back to the UK last night, and he brought Ian's personal effects from Kemerovo, including his two rings which he was wearing when he died. There is no damage to them at all. I have the comfort of knowing that death was almost certainly instant - carbon monoxide - or black damp as it used to be called in the mines. I believe there are injuries to his lower body, but they did not contribute to his death. Obviously this is what Mark was told, and has relayed to us. I haven't yet got the death certificate: all the coroner stuff starts today. But at the moment I know what I needed to know.

The night after I found out about his death, and just as I was trying to sleep, I had a vivid image flash twice in succession into my mind of Ian being pulled out from under some fallen rock, but was only buried from the waist down. He looked peaceful, and only had one or two small cuts about his face. Over the last few days the possibility of CO poisoning has been foremost in my mind, and although I feel more weepy today as now I have his stuff it is all real, I have a tremendous feeling of inner peace. Things could have been much more violent.

The office staff in Moscow are absolutely devastated by Ian's death and I have had a lovely letter from them. Also, Mark showed me a photo he had taken of Ian's desk, which is all neat and tidy, and covered in flowers.

For all you out there who knew Ian, and his - hrmm - sartorial taste...
He is taking his ease in a huge American style casket, which JUST fits into the hearse, and he is dressed, apparently in a very expensive (Russian) suit, with the absolute latest fashion Russian footwear - winklepickers! This is what I have been told.

I have been receiving letters from people who knew Ian and worked with him, but also, today, one from an association of ex Bevin Boys, who feel solidarity with anyone in the mining industry, especially at times like these.

The funeral is set for midday on Friday. The Rector's due here in a minute to sort out the service with me.

You are right. I can express my feelings better sometimes by writing them down. It gives me time to think. His company forwarded some photos they had been sent of him, including some out with the Hash. There's one of him in his bright orangr Sarajevo Hash T shirt, sitting by a lake with what is probably an empty can of Baltica by his side, and with his fingers in his mouth pulling a face and leering directly at the camera. It's on my desktop now, so every time I boot up the computer he gets greeted...usually at the moment, "Git!" or "You bastard!" Since we've got him back I've been more emotional, and cursing him for getting me into the state I'm in does help.

One day we will meet, and I look forward to that. In the meantime I hope you take some comfort from the knowledge that there are many people around the world who are with you in spirit and love right now. We need not worry about finding Ian's voice, it is alive and well in you, Ruth, Alex, and Eleanor.

I have been told by my son to stop spreading rumours about winklepickers! (He's getting more and more like his dad every day, except he's 3" taller). Apparently what was actually said was that he is kitted up in the most expensive fashionable (Russian) style suit, and although nobody has actually checked, I should be warned that the latest fashion for shoes in Moscow is winklepickers. The undertaker will know, but I don't want my image of Ian's broad fitting size ten feet in winklepickers ruined!

In my mind he's still wearing 'em! He was wearing something along those lines the night I met him!

I'm in the calm before the storm at the moment. The undertaker has shown me a photo of the coffin: it's Canadian! It is a proper casket. He estimates it weighs about 15 stone without Ian, who wasn't much short of that himself. After measuring it John, the undertaker, thinks it'll go in the hearse with about one or two inches clearance at the top!

For any of you who will be there, apologies for the snivelling wreck that will dribble in and out of the church: I'm bad at funerals at the best of times! Also, we are expecting a LOT of people, and when I get round the corner into the Priory and see them, I'll just go off on one. It's also quite a long aisle (but the carpet's red, if my memory serves me right). The clergy are also going with the red theme, as are the staff of the Brewer's Arms! (Conveniently this Sunday's liturgical colour is red).
I'll be okay once we get to the pub and someone gets a drink into me.

The main stress at the moment is getting the booklets for the service done. They're nearly finished, and Cyril, the Rector, has suggested we print 250. I've even bought a posh new printer for the job...my old Epson would probably have imploded under the strain!
Got the financial advisor coming today, but he hasn't let me know when.

Andrea.....When you first joined us here at the 'Cat we had some funny interchanges about your screen name and it was obvious then that you had a great sense of humor. More to the point, you have humor in your soul and a willingness to view reality through several different lenses which gives you the ability to take the world from any point of view.......upside down or tilted sideways. I doubt there is anything I value more in a person than that ability and that skewed version of reality and the humor it spawns.

Somehow I have no doubt that you will find all the touchstones to get you through not just the next few days, but the rest of your life as well. Just got back from Snaith and the celebration of Ian's life. It were a 'reet good do'with no morbidity about it. Ian didn't 'do' morbidity. Even the clergy wore red stoles instead of purple and the coffin was a sight to behold - VERY large and heavy :-). So much so that it couldn't be cremated with him because of the steel plate in it.

Andrea did not disgrace herself in any way and she and all of the family seem to be coping well at the moment. When asked what was going to happen to his ashes I was told that some of them are going to keep on travelling, being left in various parts of the world as family members visit them. So far this includes New Zealand and Egypt!

Thanks for today Andi and Co. A true celebration of life.

It was certainly a wonderful tribute to Ian. The rafters shook as we sang Lord of the Dance and the eulogy was mainly Andreas own words with all the juicier bits cut out! Almost everyone wore a touch of red in honour of Ian's favourite colour and later this year the Whitby Scratch Morris will dance out in red as a tribute.
Ian would have been proud of his family today as well he should.

The morning after the funeral, and I am taking stock of the mountain of debris from the wake that sort of happened last night.
We got back from the hotel about tea time in dribs and drabs, courtesy of Ian's sister who ferried the family back. Of course, my kids were the last back, and they had got Angela to detour via the local co-op minimart. Pink bubbly, wine, beers, snacks and pizzas arrived. Earler in the day I had given my new son-in -law a 13 year old bottle of Thomas Hardy's Ale(12%) which I'd bought Ian as a curiosity and that he'd totally forgotten about. It got opened, and although it was somewhat on the turn, being very sickly and otherwise indescribable, a few sips were had, and a toast made. Then there was the gift pack of Leffe. Let me just say that the youger element, and then later us and our next door neighbours, gave him an Ian style party. "For he's a jolly good fellow" was sung several times, speeches were made, and our VERY drunk older daughter was hatching plans with her cousin to send Ian across the globe in very small amounts with any of their travelling acquaintances who was willing, and to write a book about it from Ian's point of view! I ended up between 12.30am and 1am ferrying pissheads home! I was even able to have a chat with our local milkman who delivers about 1am, and who hadn't been able to make the funeral.

We were very pleased to see so many of our friends there, and wearing red. Even the staff at the hotel had asked if they could too. The Rector had said "We'll make sure we give the lad a good send off", and both he and Mike, another priest, who happens to live in my village and who has known us all the time we've been here, made sure of it. I'm pleased to say that the organist played Lord of the Dance at the "proper" speed too. I had visions of various folk musicians desperately trying somehow to up the tempo if he didn't. Not only that, courtesy of Google, (and Mudcat), our best man who we hadn't seen for about 20 years, posted up as a guest and made contact! (Paul Warwick).

I have been overwhelmed by what Ian's work colleagues have said about him. He as been described as irreplaceable, which is often a platitude tossed out at times like this, but they have explained the situation to me, and he IS! Nobody else has the broad level of skill, experience and expertise in the fields he was working in. They told me that he had wanted to go to that mine and was really pleased to be there, to be able to crack on with the job he was involved in. It was one of many he was needing to visit...wrong pit, wrong time...such is life.
His company has compiled a file of messages of condolence that have been received from all over the world, and are talking of a second. I also have a pile of letters that have been sent direct to me. The ultimate tribute is hopefully going to be paid next month at a local beer festival - he is to have a beer named for him, and the proceeds from its sale are to be sent to the disaster fund. I haven't yet counted the collection from the church, but I have around £300 in cheques that have been sent to me, and I have been told that the donations that have been made via the company account have reached into four figures: people have been asking for money to be deducted direct from any payments they were due.

The support from the Mudcat has been so helpful. It's like a comfort blanket that you can put round and slip into when you feel you need it. I tend to go on first thing in the morning at the moment, because that seems to be the time when I, as an early riser, have time to dwell on what's happened. I take a cup of coffee and some tissues, boot up the computer, greet (or often roundly curse) Ian to his face, as I have a picture of him pulling a face on the desktop, check my emails and then log on. Everybody has warned me of the dark days that WILL come, and I think I am ready to face them - I have no choice - but I'm not facing them alone.

Thanks guys

Andrea

Andrea you give him fits lass :) i remember going upstairs one day to hear my father talking (I was brought up in a non swearing household). when i sneaked a look in his room it was mums photograph beside the bed he was talking to demanding how the hell she could go and leave him alone. they had been together 63 years.

there may be dark days but remember everyone is different never let anyone force you to conform. we were down in london for my nieces wedding when we got word my brother had died. dauvitt and i flew home first and spent the night with Sis in law watching home movies especially the wedding video where theo had put on shoes that had been in the cupboard for years and can clearly be seen walking across the lawn of this castle with the sole flapping merrily in the wind.

hold on to good memories and daft moments they see you through God bless

I'm humbled, folks...don't go giving me a big head. I'm feeling a bit "twitchy" today, and my son and fiancee are heading away quite soon, but he's installed the new Windows Vista on my PC, and the reason I'm on now is that he told me to go and have a play.

Micca has phoned me this morning and we've had a nice chat. i also took my sister in law up to our village church to see the coffin flowers, which I had asked the undertaker to place there by the font.

As an interesting update, I added the collection from yesterday to the cheques received (another 4 came in the post today) and without any double checking, I have just over £1100 for the fund so far.

The best ever tribute is planned to be paid him by one of our local breweries - they are going to name a beer for him at a local festival next month, and all proceeds are going to the fund. Now that's the sort of tribute he WOULD have cared about! I'm not so sure about one of the photos of him that has been suggested fot the pump clip...

Just been for a couple of pints of 'The Insultant' - a name Ian often called himself. Wonderfully easy to drink it's a 4.2 pale ale with loads of flavour. Just the sort of beer he liked. Have already asked Keith Simpson if they will be making more (and possibly bottling it)! His picture makes a great pump clip.

Thanks Sue for a really fitting tribute to him.

It was on at the George and Dragon in the beer festival last night and today. However I understand there's still an 18 of it at the brewery which is going to go on at the Jemmy Hurst. Not sure of the exact date but Keith says it's planned to coincide with one of the session nights.

Hello everyone.

I didn't expect to see this thresd revived, but Tig told me she had put on a post about the festival.
Ian's was the only beer to have 2 pumps, and it sold out before the end. However, that might have had something to do with Ebor Morris's visit on the first night! The beer has also acquired a subtitle "Ian's Revenge" from one of our friends who found it sort of went "through" him!

To the new well-wishers - thank you so much. I have printed off all the posts until the new ones and put them into a book with the letters I have received. I'll print off the new ones too.

I'm doing ok. The fact that Ian is not going to arrive home at the end of this week is starting to bite a bit, but I have loads that needs doing quite urgently, and my plan is to lose track of the date. I didn't have a definite day for his return, but it would have probably been 27th April. The end of the following week is his birthday, but I am doing a 3 day craft fair - if I can get stuff made (so you see what I

oops - hit a wrong button somewhere!

- and what's a thresd???

I am finding I'm getting a bit emotional at the moment, but I think the adrenalin is running down. Also it's been a naff day weatherwise, and I have just put a daughter on a train to Glasgow, after she came home from uni for the weekend, and she isn't doing very well I'm afraid. Not sleeping properly, and it's starting to tell on her. She has orders to go see the doctor up there. I don't think it's hit her properly yet. Not only that, she has exams in a couple of weeks.

We'll get there somehow or other. At least she'll be back for the summer in a month, and I can keep a better eye on her.

Thanks, folks.

Just received a gorgeous shawl in shades of red from jacqui.c - it is like wearing a hug!

Ruth seemed a little more upbeat yesterday when I spoke to her - she has found an apartment for her last year in Glasgow, which looks to be nicer (and cheaper) than the one she is in. She assures me she has made a doctor's appointment for this afternoon. I get the impression that she feels if she can sleep properly again, she'll cope.

I found out last night that Ian and I are going to be mentioned in the Rector's piece for the latest parish magazine. It is all to do with bonds between people, wherever they may be. He is also going to mention the message of support our neighbouring village of Gowdall got in 2000 from the people of Mozambique, when it too was devastated by flooding.

Folks, Andrea has very kindly given me the okay to post a picture of Ian's PUMP CLIP for the ale they named after him, "The Insultant." I think it is really neat and Ian looks as though he was a wonderful person. Thanks, Andrea, for sharing with us. You've got quite a beautiful family, too.
