Ok, epn was made redundant (for the third time) last Easter. Due to being nearly 50 he couldn't get another job. Finally got one about a month ago...18 hours a week. We are trying to expand my herb business and there is lots of market, but getting it going soon enough to make any money out of it this year is tricky. All this time I have been trying to keep positive. Little things keep occurring to make it all more difficult, the most recent being a sick cat who, so far has cost me over £100. It began to get to me and I was starting to feel really depressed yesterday. Now today, my boss has told me that they are finishing and for the first time in my life, I am losing my job. Ok...it was only part time and £50 a week, but we needed it...I feel really at rock bottom. Need some hugs..... Love Lynne |

From: katlaughing Now's the perfect time to use your spare time in building up an image of what you want to accomplish. *Feel* what it is like to have it be a great success, really feel it; visualise it, even make up a poster board with images of success and keep a short, simple mantra in your mind to say when you start to get discouraged, i.e. "Success and Prosperity are mine." You don't have to believe the affirmation, just say it over any time you feel anxious. It will displace those negative feelings with positive and help your subconscious to focus on success. I know that interviews are gruesome but I have a friend that was homeless at age 57 and is just now beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. She found work that she enjoys. Remember, you are too old to do anything you do not enjoy and too old to be treated with anything but respect. Expect nothing less. |

I've worked in the dairy industry on and off for 30 years and it is part of me. My heart and soul. Have a look at the jumble sales, charity shops & car boots, it is incredible what you can pick up for pence that is worth large ammounts! If you have books to sell, check out ABE, for ebay items, type the item into "buy" then click onto "completed listings" down on the left hand side, then click "search" below it, that will bring up all the other sales of that item, showing you if it is going to be worth selling or not. I know someone who keeps watch on a small herd, spring to late fall, basically she just makes sure they are all right, and reports births or problems to the owners. Being slightly (ahem!) older than you, I know how gruesome it can be looking for employment, but be optimistic - there are niches out there for us, some of them very interesting. List your skills and try to think who might need them. I've found work on movie sets filming locally, at small museums, in craft stores, with small publications, in greenhouses, doing research, making costumes... Anyway, good luck and sorry you have to say goodbye to the cows! |

Billy was made redundant 5 years ago, lost count of the letters and applications he sent.Then he started doing odd jobs for clients of mine ( little old ladies who knew him and did not want to get a tradesman in to fix a door or paint a shed) he really enjoyed working in the fresh air and also got really fit. Last September he bumped into an old friend who asked him what he was doing, odd jobs!! Rubbish he said. Phoned next day with an interviesw with his company and now Billy is a man in a suit with a company car and a big grin on his face,put some weight on though so we have started walking in the evenings. Go with the herbs, I am sure you wont look back. lots of luck nd hugs from us too. |

I look at my healthy, intelligent kids and my solid family unit and realize that I am really very lucky and that it could be MUCH worse. I've already started planning how I can put the extra time I will have to good use in the herb business. An amusing note on that....Ted and I went to the bank yesterday to see the business Manager and open a business account. (We'd been using my personal account up till then). From: mouldy I have very close friends who have been going through a roller coaster of redundancies over the last few years. I have witnessed the stresses and pressure they have suffered, seemingly from all sides: every time it seemed they were just pulling back and poking their heads above the parapet again, some b*stard shot them down. However,I've seen them never give up hope, even with rent to find and a 16 year old teenage lad to support in school. They are in their mid fifties, and happily at the moment the husband has just got a good job which my daughter quite accidentally found for him with the company she works for, and he seems to be doing well. I've been a bit wound up in my own little world this last couple of weeks, and today decided to be less selfish and offer my support to you. It sounds to me like you have the drive and determination to really give this your best shot, and I would like to wish you all the success you deserve. I've been through this particular mill a number of times, and I know how tough it can feel, especially in the immediate aftermath. The 'sort of' comes from my own experience; every time this has happened to me, I learned something, usually good, either about the world or about myself. That learning has usually taken me to places and jobs that were better, not worse than before, although the transition has been painful sometimes. As an example, you are learning right now how many people care about you and your family enough to at least contribute to this thread, and in some cases more besides I guess. I've met you a few times; you strike me as a confident, resourceful, multi-talented and highly intelligent woman. People like you are in very short supply, and I don't think it will be long before the local employers/customers wake up to that fact, and opportunities will start to come along. Don't be tempted to take the first offer if it isn't right; be aware of your own value, and make sure that it's recognised in whatever field you move into. I hope this helps a bit. The cat seems to be better so that's one good thing. Though I am still heartbroken at losing my cows and the loss of the money will come hard, I can see that those extra hours put into the herb buisness will probably give it the boost it needs. I think we are on a winner, we just need to get by until we can start earning decent money at it. Ted's new job, though only 18 hours a week, he's really enjoying, so that's a benefit too. Last night I got a 'phone call to say my Uncle had died and then today our other cat...not the one we've already spent heaps of vets bills on but her brother, has been hit by a car. The cat was operated on today and had his shattered jaw wired. When we last heard he was not out from under the anaesthetic but the jaw wiring had gone very well and he seemed to be ok. We did keep telling him not to go across the road! We have nothing out the back but fields but the other side of the road has always been more interesting to him. Maybe this will make him think twice in future! I've had two cats before that have been hit by cars and survived, (one of them with the same injuries as this) and both ended up being VERY wary of cars and lived well into their teens Love Lynne |

Bluebell went into another herd, Freddie (whose real name is Elly-May) also went into a herd to up the butterfat. Bella, who was one of my favourites, a lovely quiet, placid cow, went to a smallholding where she will be suckling calves and hand milked for the house. I was really glad about that cos she will be loved. Even better, the man who bought her was so pleased with her temperament, he has rung to ask if there are any others, so with any luck one or two of the remaining ones may go there too. Love Lynne |

Carillion, who had just calved, died this afternoon, and Blossom, who was old and suffering from abscesses in her udder, went to the big cowshed in the sky. Carillion was one of the two who were going to be kept. She was a lovely cow. The good side of this is that they are now probably going to keep Molly instead and she is my favourite. Otherwise, things aren't so bad. Our trays of herbs are in a farm shop, a village shop and a greengrocers and all sorts of possibilities are turning up. Both the cats are fine, well and happy. From: MBSLynne Other farms I've worked on, the cows had numbers, though some would obtain a name due to being some sort of character. Because these are show cows and such a small herd, they all have names. Each year's calves have names starting with a different letter and I have helped name some of them. As well as the three mentioned, we also still have Sister Dominique, Amy, Delilah, Ceanothus and Gloria. There are also three years worth of heifers, the oldest in calf but not yet calved. And the way petrol is going up, travelling any distance isn't worth it. Having been a mining area round here, there aren't many livestock farms in the neighbourhood and no one milks, either cows or goats. My boss is keeping four, two of which are dry and waiting to calve, so she will be milking two. I don't know how many she plans to keep in the long run, but when this all blew up several months ago she was going to keep two for calves and house milk. She still wants to raise a few calves and show them. I'm going to offer to go over and lend a hand occasionally in return for some 'real' milk. Two of my favourite cows are going though. *sob, It's a good idea about the goats, but one still needs somewhere to keep them. Goats in this country need good housing and protection from weather as they are not as hardy as sheep. Love Lynne |

However, the comments that I intended might interest you. I was made redundant for the sixth time at the age of 55. (I ASSURE you that none of them were my fault!) I was looking at jobs which paid little more than half of my previous money, so I did a course in bookkeeping and started my own business, which has kept me off the dole queue for the last eleven years. It has never paid more than average money, but it's the best job I ever had in my life. I've no doubt that you are industrious because your occupation demands it, so don't be afraid of the paperwork, with a good grounding it gets easier over the years, and the accountant is effectively free, as his fee comes off your tax. Here in Godzone some people are making quite good money breeding Highland cattle for lifestyle blocks. Lovely beasts. There is money to be made stripping wallpaper, gardening, odd jobs, mowing lawns, changing refrigerator seals (of all things,) all of which, apart from the cattle, cheap to set yourself up in. Good luck. And don't get a Siamese, they are very prone to road accidents. |

They are well known for eating anything that might cross their path, including hedges, flowers, vegetable plants and herbs. That is why, in many parts of the world goatherds are nomadic - the goats need to be given new pasture, as the current pasture has been eaten clean. Also, goats stink! Though I love cows, goats are much smarter and quite hard to outwit sometimes! I knew one who used to put her head over the half-door and slide the bolt to let herself out, then go all along the other boxes letting the rest out! I don't mind the smell of goats as long as you don't keep a billy. Now they DO stink! Love Lynne |
