BS: May I weep and wail a bit?

Just when you think it can't get much worse...it does. Ok, epn was made redundant (for the third time) last Easter. Due to being nearly 50 he couldn't get another job. Finally got one about a month ago...18 hours a week. We are trying to expand my herb business and there is lots of market, but getting it going soon enough to make any money out of it this year is tricky. All this time I have been trying to keep positive. Little things keep occurring to make it all more difficult, the most recent being a sick cat who, so far has cost me over £100. It began to get to me and I was starting to feel really depressed yesterday. Now today, my boss has told me that they are finishing and for the first time in my life, I am losing my job. Ok...it was only part time and £50 a week, but we needed it...I feel really at rock bottom. Need some hugs.....

Love Lynne

Oh Lynne, life's a bugger isn't it? I'm sure with your outgoing personality, getting another job is only a matter of time.
In the meantime, have a big Scottish hug all the way from the highlands.

PS Don't tell Ted ;)

Now's the perfect time to use your spare time in building up an image of what you want to accomplish. *Feel* what it is like to have it be a great success, really feel it; visualise it, even make up a poster board with images of success and keep a short, simple mantra in your mind to say when you start to get discouraged, i.e. "Success and Prosperity are mine." You don't have to believe the affirmation, just say it over any time you feel anxious. It will displace those negative feelings with positive and help your subconscious to focus on success.

And, it's okay to weep and wail, too!**bg** {{{{{MBSLynne}}}}}}

May all the best come to you, now.

Life can be a real bugger, can't it.

It may not help much at the moment but I do think that sometimes the things that seem to be such a downer right now become turning points to a better tomorrow.

I hope that life treats you more kindly from now on.

Tricky but not impossible, and now you have the time to do it. Make every minute count.

I hope you can both find more work. I know that interviews are gruesome but I have a friend that was homeless at age 57 and is just now beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. She found work that she enjoys. Remember, you are too old to do anything you do not enjoy and too old to be treated with anything but respect. Expect nothing less.

Being unemployed is one of the easiest ways to feel crappy about yourself. Take heart. By this time next year you just might see that this is the best thing that could have happened to you. At least I hope so. We're on your side. Weep and wail away....then turn it into a song.

Thanks guys.
Trouble is, it isn't just the money and the being out of work. It's the loss of my lovely cows! I've worked in the dairy industry on and off for 30 years and it is part of me. My heart and soul. Now there are so few dairy farms left that the chances are pretty slim of me working with cows again. I don't think I can bear it. And these 12 little jerseys are all individuals and I will have to see them go....

Love Lynne

Don't worry about loosing the job, just make sure you claim all the benefits you'll be entitled to until the right job comes along! Meantime keep making the bread and knitting the toilet paper! Hugs MBSL, I don't know you but I do know that you are strong.
Ebay, get rid of some junk that you no longer want, turn it into cash.
Have a look at the jumble sales, charity shops & car boots, it is incredible what you can pick up for pence that is worth large ammounts! If you have books to sell, check out ABE, for ebay items, type the item into "buy" then click onto "completed listings" down on the left hand side, then click "search" below it, that will bring up all the other sales of that item, showing you if it is going to be worth selling or not. Of course you would not copy & paste other people's descriptions to save time!
If you have any Ebay or ABE questions that I can help with, then please PM me.
Be strong, Skipy

It os draery hard to leave a job that you love and have made such a personal investment in. My advice, for what it's worth: don't beat yourself up for ranting and railing a bit, you deserve to vent...take what comes next as it comes, but be sure to look after yourself.

Do you have enough land to keep a cow or two of your own, or of someone else's? I know someone who keeps watch on a small herd, spring to late fall, basically she just makes sure they are all right, and reports births or problems to the owners.

Being slightly (ahem!) older than you, I know how gruesome it can be looking for employment, but be optimistic - there are niches out there for us, some of them very interesting. List your skills and try to think who might need them. I've found work on movie sets filming locally, at small museums, in craft stores, with small publications, in greenhouses, doing research, making costumes...

Anyway, good luck and sorry you have to say goodbye to the cows!

Good things happen when you least expect it! Billy was made redundant 5 years ago, lost count of the letters and applications he sent. Then he started doing odd jobs for clients of mine ( little old ladies who knew him and did not want to get a tradesman in to fix a door or paint a shed) he really enjoyed working in the fresh air and also got really fit.
Last September he bumped into an old friend who asked him what he was doing, odd jobs!! Rubbish he said. Phoned next day with an interviesw with his company and now Billy is a man in a suit with a company car and a big grin on his face, put some weight on though so we have started walking in the evenings.
Go with the herbs, I am sure you wont look back.

You might like to try this.

1. Page of A4.portrait rather than landscape way round.

2. Vertical line down the middle. (No,not what you think)

3. Write a short sentence of something you want now, left column.

4. Write your immediate (probably most negative) response, right col.

5. Repeat 3 - 4 - 3- 4 as much or little as you want.

You may find that as you get out the most negative responses (it's like giving them the floor),they will slowly or steadily or gradually get weaker;could disappear;get replaced by neutral responses (keep going, like in Waiting for Godot);those in turn replaced by somethings more nourishing.

And of course, whether you try or not is entirely your affair.

   Wishing you well,

      Ivor

Well it would be a great idea except that, in England, dairy farmers are going out of business so fast that there will soon be no dairy farms left. It's a crisis situation. That's why it will be difficult for me to get another milking job. Actually it still is a good idea though...herb products for pets...now there's something to think about! Thanks kat!

P'raps you could downsize and look into milking goats?

Herb products for pets is a good idea, but you'd have to research like crazy, if you were making remedies. Messybeast's website, for example has reported that Tea Tree oil is likely toxic for cats.

However, I'm betting there are at least forty million cats in the UK who'd like some high quality fresh catnip, instead of the dry low potency chopped hay they get from commercial places. Do I hear a "Hell, Meow!"?

Subject: RE: BS: May I weep and wail a bit?
From: Liz the Squeak

Yeah... first it's the catnip for "recreational purposes", a quick roll in it, no probs... "I can give it up whenever I want" you say... but one day, the commercial stuff just doesn't cut it... you want fresher, stronger, greener.

Then, before you know it, you've got a 10pack of Whiskas Crunchies a day habit and a bald spot on your forehead. Soon you'll be into the pennyroyal and that's some bad shit man... Don't do it.. Just Say Meo!

George You really put into words what I've been thinking. Every time something else hits and I say to myself "How much worse can it get?" I look at my healthy, intelligent kids and my solid family unit and realize that I am really very lucky and that it could be MUCH worse.

I've already started planning how I can put the extra time I will have to good use in the herb business. An amusing note on that....Ted and I went to the bank yesterday to see the business Manager and open a business account. (We'd been using my personal account up till then). I have very close friends who have been going through a roller coaster of redundancies over the last few years. I have witnessed the stresses and pressure they have suffered, seemingly from all sides: every time it seemed they were just pulling back and poking their heads above the parapet again, some b*stard shot them down.
However,I've seen them never give up hope, even with rent to find and a 16 year old teenage lad to support in school. They are in their mid fifties, and happily at the moment the husband has just got a good job which my daughter quite accidentally found for him with the company she works for, and he seems to be doing well.

I've been a bit wound up in my own little world this last couple of weeks, and today decided to be less selfish and offer my support to you. It sounds to me like you have the drive and determination to really give this your best shot, and I would like to wish you all the success you deserve. Hey Lynne; I'm 'sort of' sorry to hear your news, but only 'sort of'. I've been through this particular mill a number of times, and I know how tough it can feel, especially in the immediate aftermath. The 'sort of' comes from my own experience; every time this has happened to me, I learned something, usually good, either about the world or about myself. That learning has usually taken me to places and jobs that were better, not worse than before, although the transition has been painful sometimes. As an example, you are learning right now how many people care about you and your family enough to at least contribute to this thread, and in some cases more besides I guess. I've met you a few times; you strike me as a confident, resourceful, multi-talented and highly intelligent woman. People like you are in very short supply, and I don't think it will be long before the local employers/customers wake up to that fact, and opportunities will start to come along. Don't be tempted to take the first offer if it isn't right; be aware of your own value, and make sure that it's recognised in whatever field you move into.
I hope this helps a bit. By the way, I've done a lot of careers guidance work with adults in my time; pm me if you want a chat at 'mates rates' (i.e. nowt).

Thanks again everyone. It is almost humbling to see how many people are concerned.

The cat seems to be better so that's one good thing.

Though I am still heartbroken at losing my cows and the loss of the money will come hard, I can see that those extra hours put into the herb buisness will probably give it the boost it needs. I think we are on a winner, we just need to get by until we can start earning decent money at it. Ted's new job, though only 18 hours a week, he's really enjoying, so that's a benefit too.

Colyn, I'll pm you later, I have to go and milk cows in a minute, while they are still there! My boss is continuing until she's told she has to stop, and given the speed at which beauracracy works, it may be some time!

Lynne..... Went through all this at age 60, Mine was only a boring office job though, Cows is people!
Curiously, the last five years of my working career were the most fun I ever had. Get onto an agency and landed various 'trouble shooter' assignements. This meant I could go in somewhere, tell the management what a crap job they had been doing, and they couldn't sack me because they needed me to help sort it out. I really enjoyed myself!
Can't see how you could apply the principal to cows, but maybe you could get yourself seconded to DEFRA. ( MR Milliband, do you actually know what a cow is?)

I can't believe this! Our bad run continues. Last night I got a 'phone call to say my Uncle had died and then today our other cat...not the one we've already spent heaps of vets bills on but her brother, has been hit by a car. He's shattered his jaw which will have to be wired. The rough estimate of the bill so far is over £250.

I just hope when all this ends we get a corresponding run of good luck!

Once again, thanks guys. With family and friends to be thankful for we are still blessed.

The cat was operated on today and had his shattered jaw wired. When we last heard he was not out from under the anaesthetic but the jaw wiring had gone very well and he seemed to be ok. We did keep telling him not to go across the road! We have nothing out the back but fields but the other side of the road has always been more interesting to him. Maybe this will make him think twice in future! I've had two cats before that have been hit by cars and survived, (one of them with the same injuries as this) and both ended up being VERY wary of cars and lived well into their teens

MBSLynne: well, I cannot be there to sing it for you but here are some of the lyrics to a tune called "One More Ride," that is on my first CD. A few years back a lady came up to me in tears after my set
and told a story of trying to open her own store and after years of
trying and trying and not giving up despite the obstacles she faced - she now had her own business. Keep your chin and your faith up and hang in there. The whole song's a bit longer, but here's a verse, the chorus and the bridge -

Well our train's pulled out of the station
Now we're rollin down the track
We may be bound for heaven or hell
But there ain't no turnin back
This ain't no young and wide-eyed innocent ride
This here's an old familiar rail
Though the names and the faces of our stories are different
It's still the same old tale /

We're takin one more ride / givin it one more try
You leave your baggage with the pullman and follow your heart
We're gonna make this damned train fly
We're takin one more ride / givin it all we got
We got a signal to roll from the gandydancer
Keepin the engine hot / we're takin one more ride

Some people abandon their dreams when they fail
"Settle for less, before it's too late"
"But if it's in your heart" said a wise old man,
"You fall seven time - you gotta get up eight"

We're takin one more ride, etc.

Hang in there, friend. Cheers.

On Wednesday the first three cows went off to a sale. Bluebell went into another herd, Freddie (whose real name is Elly-May) also went into a herd to up the butterfat. Bella, who was one of my favourites, a lovely quiet, placid cow, went to a smallholding where she will be suckling calves and hand milked for the house. I was really glad about that cos she will be loved. Even better, the man who bought her was so pleased with her temperament, he has rung to ask if there are any others, so with any luck one or two of the remaining ones may go there too.

Well I'm still milking the cows, so that's a good thing. However today we had a double sadness. Carillion, who had just calved, died this afternoon, and Blossom, who was old and suffering from abscesses in her udder, went to the big cowshed in the sky. Carillion was one of the two who were going to be kept. She was a lovely cow. The good side of this is that they are now probably going to keep Molly instead and she is my favourite.

Otherwise, things aren't so bad. Our trays of herbs are in a farm shop, a village shop and a greengrocers and all sorts of possibilities are turning up. Both the cats are fine, well and happy. Hopefully we are now on the way up!

Sorry to hear about Carillion and Blossom, though. Puir things...good though they will keep Molly. Lovely things, aren't they? The place where I grew up ahd an old milking shed. The cows' names were still above each station, written in hand on cardboard. I used to love going in there and reading the names.

Other farms I've worked on, the cows had numbers, though some would obtain a name due to being some sort of character. Because these are show cows and such a small herd, they all have names. Each year's calves have names starting with a different letter and I have helped name some of them. As well as the three mentioned, we also still have Sister Dominique, Amy, Delilah, Ceanothus and Gloria. There are also three years worth of heifers, the oldest in calf but not yet calved.

Time to git your own cows - then no bosses can take 'em away.

I know, cows are costly. Here, if you've a suitable field, you can often take care of a herd over summer, usually cows that are about to calve or young steers (big calves, really) on grass.

Small farms are so precarious here in the UK. However, after the problems over the past few years in farming, if you really do have skills with cows, I would have thought that there might be openings, particularly with people who are rebuilding rare breed collections.

It may mean relocation, though.

Could you transfer some of your cow skills to milking goats? With the rising demand pretty much everywhere for goats' milk for cheese and the anti-cow-milk crowd, there must be some largish herds of goats somewhere.

Plus, goats are so neat with their rectangular pupils and long ears!

Trouble is, my job wasn't full time so finding one that fits in with my herb business would be difficult. And the way petrol is going up, travelling any distance isn't worth it. Having been a mining area round here, there aren't many livestock farms in the neighbourhood and no one milks, either cows or goats.

Oh well, at least it frees up more time to concentrate on the herb business.

Wednesday will be really hard though, when I say goodbye to the cows for the last time.

Do you all mow grass over there? I know of a woman who is making a great living renting out her sheep as grass mowers. She takes them to the place, puts up a temp. pen around the area to be *chomped* and they go to town. I don't see why you couldn't use goats instead and it could be part-time.

Give the cows some hugs, too, please. I love cows!

I will give all the cows an extra hug on Wednesday evening. My boss is keeping four, two of which are dry and waiting to calve, so she will be milking two. I don't know how many she plans to keep in the long run, but when this all blew up several months ago she was going to keep two for calves and house milk. She still wants to raise a few calves and show them. I'm going to offer to go over and lend a hand occasionally in return for some 'real' milk. Two of my favourite cows are going though. *sob,

It's a good idea about the goats, but one still needs somewhere to keep them. Goats in this country need good housing and protection from weather as they are not as hardy as sheep.

By the time that I got down here, Lynn, things seem to be looking up for you a little. However, the comments that I intended might interest you.
I was made redundant for the sixth time at the age of 55. (I ASSURE you that none of them were my fault!) I was looking at jobs which paid little more than half of my previous money, so I did a course in bookkeeping and started my own business, which has kept me off the dole queue for the last eleven years. It has never paid more than average money, but it's the best job I ever had in my life.
I've no doubt that you are industrious because your occupation demands it, so don't be afraid of the paperwork, with a good grounding it gets easier over the years, and the accountant is effectively free, as his fee comes off your tax.

Here in Godzone some people are making quite good money breeding Highland cattle for lifestyle blocks. Lovely beasts.
There is money to be made stripping wallpaper, gardening, odd jobs, mowing lawns, changing refrigerator seals (of all things,) all of which, apart from the cattle, cheap to set yourself up in.

Good luck. And don't get a Siamese, they are very prone to road accidents.

Hi Lynne
Hope you got the package I sent you.
Look after yourselves and I hope to see you later this year. Sidmouth would not be the same!!
BTW beware of goats. They are well known for eating anything that might cross their path, including hedges, flowers, vegetable plants and herbs. That is why, in many parts of the world goatherds are nomadic - the goats need to be given new pasture, as the current pasture has been eaten clean.
Also, goats stink! Not to be compared with the lovely smell one gets from cattle.
Luvnkisses
Colyn.

Haven't received it yet Colyn.

I used to have a goat so I know all about them. Though I love cows, goats are much smarter and quite hard to outwit sometimes! I knew one who used to put her head over the half-door and slide the bolt to let herself out, then go all along the other boxes letting the rest out!

I don't mind the smell of goats as long as you don't keep a billy. Now they DO stink!

Love Lynne
