What to pack for a Folk festival/weekend

31 Mar 07 - 11:38 PM (#2013084)
Subject: What to pack for a Folk festival/weekend
From: Soldier boy

As I get older I find it more and more daunting to pack for a Folk Festival/Weekend. I like to go camping and that means packing for every eventuality and the weather.
It becomes a bit like a S.A.S survival expedition/mission in hostile territory. You have to consider every scenario you might encounter over the term of a weekend or a week.
More often than not you pack 10 times more than you actually will need.
If you are an artist,concert-goer,musician,singer,morris dancer,steward,stall-holder or organiser etc etc what are your must- pack items?
I do not intend this thread to be of a too serious or intellectual nature so please feel free to have fun with it and be as silly as you like.
So what are your suggestions to pack for the typical Folk Festival Week/Weekend????

An opener.

Depending on what your act is, you may need more than one type, you chauvinistic bastards!

on a serious note, I made a 1-page check list ranging from things like undies to umbrella, cutlery to camera, tentpoles & tickets (the last added the time I had to return to pick up said tickets).

But the absolute essential for me is my tiny teddies in their tiny pink beauty case home!

Undewear, socks, t-shirts, toothbrush and toothpaste, comb, soap and that's it for inside the guitar case with the guitar. Sleeping bag with a ligt tarp and a pillow. That's it. As I age, I have begun to insist on the pillow.

I pack whatever is deemed necessary in order to have a good time. This will always include a wide assortment of musical instruments. The necessities of life (things that keep us alive) are packed by my wife. She actually likes to do that sort of thing. If all the packing were left up to me I'd probably have a lot of fun but may not survive a 3 day festival.
We are not hampered by the lack of space for transportation. Some years ago I acquired an old (1952) 20 passenger school bus. Rather short and stubby so its easy to park. I hollowed out the insides and put a bed/seat running lengthwise along each side. It's all open so when we get rain/storm/cold the bus will accommodate around 12 people playing instruments. With all the windows it is rather interesting to watch people trying to secure tents, patch leaks, getting soaked etc. The big fancy RV's with small windows miss out on half the fun.
The bus also doubles as a band bus and when used in parades we attach a portable sound system.
When you get old you need something like this.

I don't go anywhere without a notebook. Useful for jotting down all those things like addresses, lyrics, titles of songs that impressed you and you might want to hear again... In fact all those things you once thought you would remember and didn't!

I travel fairly light for camping. Tickets, tent, sac de couchage, cooking equipment, stove and gas bottle (they all live in one box now after leaving one or the other behind...), food for 5 days, beer money, notebook, sewing kit, reading books.

As for clothes.. what ever is clean and doesn't need ironing!

For several years I found I had a habit of packing 15 pairs of socks and no knickers or 15 pairs of knickers and no socks. After doing that too many times, I gave up wearing socks. Now I only have to remember the knickers.

Manitas travels heavy. When I go camping, there's room in the car for all my things, a child and her things, and often another passenger and their things. Manitas goes camping and the estate car is full to bursting with just his stuff.

I have to check sometimes, that he hasn't got the bath in there or taken all the knives.

For older people: mat or lambskin to protect your kidneys.
When there are trees around: light hammock.

No-one's mentioned bogroll yet, which always used to be on my list, and was the luxury Andy Kershaw chose for his desert island - does this mean that the increasing regulation of campsite facilities requires that there is always someone responsible for replenishing portaloos?

Sorry haven't read all the entries on this but I go to a festival every weekend from May to Sept and I find I need: This is like one of those drinking games...

Loo paper
air bed
my 6X4" thick peices of foam rubber
a quilt
an under quilt
my pillows
a night dress that looks like a dress when roaming to the loo first thing
torch
insulation to go under the air bed
oh and a tent!!!

there must be more but i can't think of it just yet.

We have a twelve foot trailer. I have a trailer list, food list and clothing list. I pack the trailer in the spring with kitchen gear, bedding, towels, and dry goods like coffee, sugar, paper towel, foil, plus folding chairs, table, cheap umbrellas, outdoor stove, lanterns, etc. Usually buy food last thing, pack trailer fridge when we get there. Clothing I divide into weather, as in raining, sunny, cold, possible snow flurries.

Wow folks I've only just checked my thread and I am gob smacked at your rapid and excellent response.

Richard bridges' extensive list reminds me of the S.A.S/Commando- style approach that I have sometimes succombed to in preparing for a festival (I am Soldier boy afterall!!)

Liz the Squeak don't forget the knickers...or there again.....and a spare liver sounds like an essential requirement and Sandra in Sydney just what are your 'tiny teddies'?

Condoms have been mentioned of course but how many end up unfullfilled (come on be honest!)

As we all get older and time makes no allowance for failing eye sight, hearing, memory, virility, capacity to drink, mobility, speech and coordination etc etc what else needs to be added to the list of what we need to pack to overcome/disguise such ailments or things we need to do to before major folk events to conceal or repair the aging process??

Over to you.

Foolestroupe, Jim Lad, and other pillow lovers. You mean you actually go to bed during festivals! I do take a nap now and then and actually have a bus full of pillows of various sizes and shapes. For "cat" naps try the large "Martha Stewart" style ~ we bought ours at K-mart. I tried to get red and green for port and starboard but they only had blue and red. It's a tough life.

If you have friends who overindulge you can always prop their heads up out of the dirt by using a log or rock. They usually don't seem to mind. That way you won't "soil" a good pillow.

If you travel by car, get one that is easy to remove the back seats from. That way, as well as the tent, you can fit in other things to make life more comfortable. We take a load of big cushions from an old setteee----so much more comfortable than an airbed !! Our "porta-potti" chemical toilet is a "must"---who wants to walk in the rain, or trudge through mud or wet grass, to reach a site toilet, only to find it"s fully occupied / there"s no paper / there"s no water /several people have been "unwell" in various ways - Etc..?? No , thankyou !! And don"t forget--Spare Tent-pegs,and cordage -----The last 2 years at Sidmouth, the wind has got up, and I have had to put in extra pegs and guy-ropes ! Also--instead of those bulky, useless, battery-guzzling camping-lanterns, try using a couple of the AA mini-Maglites, or similar......hang them upside down, and unscrew the heads right off, and you will get a much better ,all-round light. You can now get various "maglite " copies that actually have on / off switches, so you don"t need to screw the head back on to turn them off !! And AA batteries are easy to buy and store ! And , finally, always take toilet-rolls and kitchen -towel rolls, as they have so many uses ( especially if it rains ! ).

I think you'd be well advised to camp next to Richard and then you can borrow anything you've forgotten. And, if possible, well away from Wolfhound person, at least unless you bring earplugs. ... which I was just going to add to the list anyway.

Also:
Reading glasses (for those with failing faculties, as mentioned above)

Lists of songs/tunes you like in case you can't think what to play or sing

Prompt cards/notes for songs if necessary (no discussion please - songbook thread is already dealing with this)

Manuscript paper if you are able and likely to write down a tune

J-cloths (infinitely useful)

"sports" type mineral-water bottle - handy to carry in the daytime, doesn't spill if you knock it over in the night.

small folding stool you can take in to sessions etc if seating is in short supply

Piece of bubble-wrap big enough to sit on (keeps you dry and insulated if you sit on damp ground)

We also take a 2-litre icecream box filled with lots of little items that may be useful - spare lilo bungs, pen, felt-tip marker, insulating tape, string, a length of that stripey hazard tape, matches, Swiss Army knife, etc etc.

And some sort of bag or small rucksack with room to carry some of the above around with you, as well as some picnic food, drinks etc.

Always take a jacket of some sort, even if in the summer. I once had to stop on the way to a festival in Indiana in mid-August and buy a jacket when an unseasonable cold snap sent temperatures to nearly freezing.

And always take wet weather gear of some sort. Golf umbrellas are great. Decent plastic parkas that take up little room are readily available. And take an extra pair of shoes to wear while your main pair is drying out. Even a pair of rubber flip-flops beats wet soggy shoes.

The loo roll and kitchen roll come near the top of my list which includes a long sleeve thermal vest/top (for sleeping on those chilly nights), a fluffy scarf to keep my neck and head warm (while sleeping),and bed socks too. As long as I sleep comfortably at any festival I can tolerate having forgotten to pack 'other essentials'.
I am lucky and have a faithful motorhome which generally contains everything (and the kitchen sink)even if the tap has 'siezed'.
My bijou loo is a must, even at my tender age. As a sociable vehicle I'm often at the helm of the Hull contingent on our travels and only last Saturday at 2am I had 12 guests sitting cozily 'indoors' waiting for our hostess to let us back into her house!! but that's another story.
It's late so I'm going now.

Most of the above, and then some. Any of my friends would be happy to tell you that I don't travel light. If anyone has forgotten anything, I'm the one they come to because it's pretty certain I will have it.

I'm in the process of packing for The National Folk Festival in Canberra this weekend - leaving on Thursday morning. There are a few special things one has to consider for this festival. One is that the weather is capable of huge temperature changes between the day and the night, so a great variety of clothes is needed, including very warm bedding. I always take a hot water bottle too, because my feet get cold, and unless I can warm them up, I find it impossible to warm the rest of myself up.

Another feature of this place is that the ground is rock-hard, and it is very hard to hammer pegs in. The last time John went to this festival, he took a drill to make the holes for the pegs!

Another thing I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned, is a highlighter pen to mark the things one wants to see in the program. I might take a selection of colours this time, because having looked at the program online, the events on the program have a yellow background, much like my usual highlighter colour. If the printed program is like that, I will need pink or a strong green for highlighting.

IDEAL TRAVEL TOWEL

Take 2-1/2 yards of cheap cotton flannel (gaudy prints are usually cheap)-- I used to get mine at a dollar a yard. Finish off the ends with hems. Can be handsewn in a jiff or even-- horrors!-- left raggedy!

Packs small, absorbs a lot of water, dries very fast, covers ALL. Can be used for a million other things enumerated elsewhere such as shawl/laprobe/spare blanket; tablecloth, seat cushion or cover; sari/kilt/bathrobe/jammies; laundry bag, window curtain, songbook sack; shade-maker or turban (dry for warm or wet for cooling)... shroud... memory holder!

Makes nice (warm fuzzies) out of anything indecent, unclean, uncomfortable, uncozy. And remember, it was CHEAP-- leave behind or give away if packing space is tight or you forget to grab it at departure time.

Mr Red, what's this obsession with red T-shirts (do you actually own 35 of them)?
The trouble with this scenario must surely be that no matter how many times you tell people that you change into a fresh T-shirt 5 times a day no one will believe you and will just think that you have worn the same red T-shirt all week and may try to avoid getting down-wind of you (even though you are squeaky clean!)
Interesting logistics but not convinced this works in a tightly-knit social environment. In other words, how does it affect your 'pulling' power?
Could be useful in a Blind Date situation though because you will always be able to say I'll be the one in a red T-shirt!

Anyway, I've just discovered a flaw in your mathematics.
If you pack 20 red T-shirts for 4 days you will need to pack 35 red T-shirts for 7 days (@5 a day). So you have enough red T-shirts after all and don't need to pack any soap powder!
So no domestication required. How good is that?

Money. Food/cooler/booze. Meds. Tampons/pads. Clothing optional. Tent and sleeping bag or other sleeping arrangements are nice, car in a pinch.
