BS: Southern Ireland traditional music bars

Hi all
We are recently back from a fantastic few days in Killarney, County Kerry. I'm sure we did many of the usual tourist sites, The Ring of Kerry, Dingle Penninsula etc and all I can tell you is that if you haven't been you must - what a country. Scenery spectacular, people wonderful, Guinness a must and the bars - well 'addictive' (or perhaps that's the Guinness!) On the plane a fella we met said that Killarney was lovely but almost staged to be typically "twee" to please the American tourist. I don't know about that, we are typical Brits and we enjoyed every second! We spent an evening at the Killarney Grand and the following two in Danny Manns - both fantastic with live traditional music well - worth the journey. Danny Manns does fab food too.

But enough of that, what I'm asking of you all is to pick your brains of all things Irish. Well, perhaps not all things but certainly all things musically Irish. It's my 40th in May, we'd love to go back to Ireland but would like to try somewhere else this time. Can any of you give suggestions for somewhere suitable - must have traditional live music, must be easily accessible (ie guest houses/hotels within walking/staggering distance of town) must have fantastic scenery - seems that's a given for Southern Ireland - and just a generally nice place to be. We wondered about Limerick or Tipperary - yes, I know it's a long way - but not sure what's actually there???

So, any ideas gratefully received.............

Thank you in advance
Maxine

Galway would be a good option.

p.s. This thread might usefully be kicked upstairs!

Cork, and West Cork. If you liked Killarney, you'll love Cork, town or country. Because it is pretty free of Killarneyisms.Perhaps Cork is more famous for good coversation than trad tunes. You might be better exploring Clare ,up to Galway.

From Clare to Here - yes that sounds good. Seems like Galway has a familiar theme - Thank you Greg and Martin....

BTWE, there's a nice small festival in Kinvara over the (Irish) May bank holiday.

Cork or Dingle or go North a bit to Doolin.

Killorglin for Puck Fair is interesting (early Aug.)

I liked Ballybunnion, too.

I too think this thread might be upstairs.

When you say "traditional" you may wish to be careful what you wish for. Traditional Irish is not all O'Carolan and Euro-Celtique semi-disco at breakneck speed with thudding bodhrans.

You may of course already know this, but those you ask may perhaps not.
