Well how often have you said "My father gets right up my nose"

All Keith has done, is prove his father did get right up his nose.

So in what way is Keith's action NOT cannibalism? After all, he consumed and ingested his own father - whether by nose or by mouth is immaterial.

People go to great lengths to scatter their loved one's ashes in beautiful, peaceful, places where that person would like to be. I can't imagine anybody wanting to end up in someone's nose.

Well I like him. I love his guitar riffs. I love his genuine reverence for r&b musicians, many of ths songs he has written - and also I've put food on the table banging out a semblance of his music in the corner of numerous pubs.

And if Keef had wanted to eat his dad's dick in a frankfurter bun - that would have been allright with me, too.

He was a w*nker when he was young, he's a w*nker now. Just a "celebrity" one; but all that tells me is that he is an attention-seeker, and clearly there are few limits, if any, to his attention-seeking.

At the same interview he also had the balls (or lack of brains) to criticise current groups and singer/songwriters as "wanting to be something they're not", and called them "crap". That smacks of sheer jealousy and territorial rubbishing of others. As for Keith himself, I think of him as no great artist, his guitar technique was always adequate but not dazzling (not that if it was any better it would change my view of him). Yep, he is a member of a famous group. But to me he is simply a waste of space.

I ask spaw and mick if they know Keef to criticize him. Your harsh judgments are based only on what the tabloids of the sensationalism of the media tells you. He is one of the best blues guitarists alive today and well respected in the music industry. He has survived probably because deep down is a decent human being and father. He was young and highly influenced by the temptations of what the 'rock' world tempted him when he fell onto the world of drugs, and booze. But has survived and prevailed.

You snort your ancestors' ashes every day, every time the wind blows or the dirt is stirred up. The ancestry might not be as immediate, but it's there.

Subject: RE: BS: Keith Richards snorted his Dad's ashes!
From: Big Mick

I didn't realize that knowing someone was required to criticize their actions. That is a completely inane comment. Richards is the one that made the comment about snorting his Da with some blow. And it is worthy of criticism.

As to him being one of the best blues guitarists alive....another inane comment. He is certainly a competent blues guitarist, but nothing special. The list of others that are much better is too long to write. True blues affondicio's know who they are.

But, I want to point out that his music (which is mediocre, IMO) has nothing to do with his actions. Knowing Spaw's background, I understand his anger. We make heroes out of people that abuse themselves, to the point of ridiculousness. But we have real heroes out there (such as Spawzer) for whom just staying alive is a heroic task, nevermind all the great things they do with all the challenges in their lives.

Rambling comment generator off......

I don't have much trouble with an off the wall comment from Keef. None of us here seems to know him well enough to say with any certainty what kind of a bloke he is. Still, some of the people, who have known him best, have been very loyal to him. That tells me something.

Subject: RE: BS: Keith Richards snorted his Dad's ashes!
From: George Papavgeris

Dunno, Alan - loyalty has many possible causes, not all of them selfless. Like most people, I can only go by the persona he chooses to project, off the wall comments and all. He has had 40 years experience of being in the public eye, he's no newcomer to the tabloids, so no excuse there. He may well not give a gnat's fart about the public's view of him - his prerogative. But that does not invalidate the public's view overall; only in his own eyes.

I always loved Geoff Bradford's comment, 'They asked me to be lead guitarist in the Stones, but I said I didn't like the way it was going. They'd just got Keith Richard - tall and sexy looking, and he could play the Chuck Berry riff book backwards, forwards and sideways - so I refused. Always the smart move!'

If Keef abuses himself as much as as the 'tabloids' and sensational media espouses, I think he'd be dead by now. Another artist attacked in such a manner is Bob Dylan who himself has admitted to playing that up to the press and public.

As you mentioned mick, "knowing spaws" background, I certainly don't know spaw at all, but my interpretation of him here here in the Cat is one that is crude and somewhat arrogant. Someone I wouldn't let past my door based on this alone. I do not judge him completely because of his actions here in the Cat for If I knew him personally, then I would have a true impression of him and who knows, I'd invite him into my abode without hesitation.

It cannot be denied Keef is well respected by his peers of musicians, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Concerning his father is who abandoned him at an early age, Keef searched him out and looked after him until his death. He is a decent father who has cared much for his children. Family is important to him and that deserves some respect of him as a human being in this day and age. I'm not raising him to the platform of a hero. Far too many people have been honored as such, so much so, it has cheapened it's true meaning.

OK, fair enough, tolerance. I think we will agree to disagree. I am prepared to admit that I don't know about what kind of a Father/Son he is. But I can tell you what I know about his public persona, and it is nothing I would hold up to my kids as an example. And he did, after all, make the comment.

As to his cred's as a musician, I didn't say he wasn't good. But I seriously take issue with your description of him as one of the best blues guitarists alive. He isn't even close.

OK, nobody is all bad anyway, I accept that Keef looked after his old da, and that earns him some kudos. Not a total "waste of space" (as I called him earlier), then. Still, with all positive context, or with context excluded, the statement about snorting his dad's ashes is unfortunate, crass, attention-seeking, and quite possibly criminal (is cannibalism not outlawed in the UK?). Not Keef's finest moment, I contend.

I recall hearing about a tribe somewhere (Amazon?) that would cremate their dead relatives then grind up the ashes and ingest them in a beverage. This was a way of insuring that the family members remained together forever. Seems to me that this as reasonable a ritual as those practiced by many religions.

Many things can seem reasonable in one context but not in another, bobad. I have to confess that my own reaction to the news was not "yeah, OK, why not"... Because I have taboos, of course, fed to me by society or religion or whatever. Now, I am not suggesting that all taboos are reasonable either; but when you live in a given society - especially when you have made a good living out of it - you might think twice before bucking its taboos, and not simply depend on celebrity status to excuse you.

The best thing I ever saw Richards do was a conversation with Hunter Thompson. Both completely goofed up......Funniest thing I ever saw.

A great blues guitarist isn't manifested on how well one can 'shred the axe' but how one can bring they out the soul in their guitar playing.

Keef has exemplified his craft by his renditions of "You Got to Move", "Prodigal Son"
or how he plays own compositions "Sweet Virginia", "High and Dry", "No Expectations", "Love in Vain" and "Dear Doctor". Simple techniques, but he, as I said brings "out the soul".

Richards Denies Snorting His Dad's Ashes
By Associated Press

In this March 12, 2007, file photo, Keith Richards ...
LONDON - Off the cuff or up the nose? That was the question Wednesday as Keith Richards said he was joking when he described snorting his father's ashes along with a hit of cocaine.

"It was an off-the-cuff remark, a joke, and it is not true. File under April Fool's joke," said Bernard Doherty, a Rolling Stones spokesman, about Richards' quote in NME magazine.

But the magazine said on its Web site that the remark was "no quip, but came about after much thinking" by the 63-year-old guitarist.

"He didn't offer the information, I had to ask him a couple of questions to get the information out of him," said interviewer Mark Beaumont. "He didn't come straight out with that."

In the interview, Richards was quoted as saying: "The strangest thing I've tried to snort? My father. I snorted my father."

"He was cremated and I couldn't resist grinding him up with a little bit of blow. My dad wouldn't have cared ... It went down pretty well, and I'm still alive."

Richards' father, Bert, died in 2002, at 84.

In a statement posted on the Rolling Stones Web site, Richards said:

"The complete story is lost in the usual slanting! The truth of the matter is that I planted a sturdy English Oak. I took the lid off the box of ashes and he is now growing oak trees and would love me for it!!! I was trying to say how tight Bert and I were. That tight!!! I wouldn't take cocaine at this point in my life unless I wished to commit suicide."

But people will make harsh judgments based entirely on articles from People Magazine, Daily Mirror, or even New Musical Express or whatever cheap rag that relies on sensationalism to make it's money. People will also draw judgments basely on the appearance of an individual. And yes, pass judgments based on jealous envy. It's a weakness of the human spirit.

Mick what actions. Already his comments espoused in the New Musical Express are being questioned. His actions speak for itself. He has never harmed anyone. He is a family man. Only one failed marriage, and that speaks for itself in the world he lives. He may look like a freak and act like one on stage. As Alice Cooper says "the more the public cries out for more, the more outlandish my act will be".

I'm not surprised. The Rolling Stones have always relied on formula. They've always been pop. They had a couple of good tunes but they were more business than music. I didn't buy it when I was young and I don't buy it now. Keith Richards with soul? I thought he sold it long ago.

Apparently, they still know how to get all the attention they need. They certainly know how to work the crowd. I guess their target audience are bottom feeders who like anything gross. They've made lots of money being that way.

Lets just say I've never been a big fan of British Blues. I like my Blues a little more authentic. In fact, it took me a long time to understand the British invasion at all. It seemed like a market version of the real thing. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. Thats just the way I saw it.

I guess you like it or you don't. Certainly young white American kids were not playing blues in any great numbers before that happened. Jeff Beck recalls being very mystified that US audiences took the Brits seriously in the early days. However, time has passed and British blues has a pedigree which is only a few decades shorter than the US has. Certainly the Brits were taken very seriously by some of the US giants - BB King and Muddy Waters in particular. British urban blues is as authentic as any other type. It now has firm musical and historical roots and has definitely contributed to the development of the genre. Whether you like it or not is another question. I would say the Stones have not been a serious blues band since Mick Taylor left in 1974. In fact their heyday as a blues band had already come and gone before that.
I guess they are a bit gross at times, but there have been occasional bursts of lyrical and musical intelligence. Notably songs like "Wild Horses" and "Waiting on a Friend" prove that they really can write grown up songs about women if they want to. "High Wire" and "Undercover" tell pithy political truths, even if they are not actually musical masterpieces. I think they could have done better both musically and lyrically had they really tried.
At the end of the day, I like them. I grew up with them and they feel like an old gang of friends. I know they are pretty imperfect, like lots of my other friends. They have never really done any serious harm that I can see, however, and I can see the joke when they are taking the piss. I don't expect too much of them, so I guess I don't get too disappointed!

No - wrong timing. Two days after the inerview a spokeswoman for KR claimed it had been meant as a joke; but the original interviewer refutes that. I think (but cannot prove of course) that it was a case of "high jinks" and a thoughtless moment on the part of Keith, and a damage limitation exercise followed. In any case, even if it had been meant as a joke I would still find it in poor taste.

But each to his own. Perhaps literally in this case.

Besides the songs I mentioned above, I'm not a Stones fan. But I do respect what they have contributed to the music world, regardless if they are showmen and work the audience. Hell what performer doesn't work his audience in one way or another. If it wasn't for the likes of the British Blues Bands with the Stones at the forefront, many of these American true blues originators would have gone unregongnized by their own countrymen.

Yes, alanabit my mistake "Love in Vain" is a Robert Johhnson composition, but I think the Stones did one hell of a version of it. Thanks to Keef.

Up his nose, eh?

Oh gee.....and I thought we have a problem because my recently deceased old Mum wants hers scattered where she used to live, which is now a baseball diamond and she was never a fan. She's currently sitting on my kitchen table in a brown plastic can, next to the ground coffee....Keef, you've just given me an idea!.....naaah.

Now her dentures, that's another problem....can't bring myself to just chuck 'em in the trash. Perhaps I could drop them off fisherman's wharf where she was born. I can picture a harbour seal popping up and flashing a new pearly white grin to entertain the tourists. LOL She'd like that.

Sorry Villain, I didn't think you would take it so seriously.

Let me try again. I think that the Stones are pop. I think their music has been designed to appeal to the masses. They have commercial appeal and they milk it for all its worth. Now that they are getting older, Keith has come up with a wild story that will surely make the tabloid press and thereby keeping the Stones in the spotlight. They are masters of manipulating their image and this latest gossip was obviously intended to shock and 'gross people out'. Hasn't that been their 'schtick' all along?

I don't see what's gross about sniffing ashes. Hell, anyone who ever smoked a butt or a roach has inhaled ashes. Like, they don't burn twice, ya know?

OH KAY

Ahem, well with that I leave this thread with the last two memorable lines of Sweet Virginia.

"Come on come on down you got it in you
Got to scrape that shit right off your shoes"

Keith Richard has a talent for getting attention, doesn't he? This particular story doesn't really deserve much...

Was it Waylon Jennings who wrote, If you don't like Bob Wills, you can kiss my ass....?

It was very well put, whoever wrote it. Some people just feel that about their favourite musicians. Criticism of Keef has obviously pulled a few tail feathers.

Many of you may not know this but those are the words Mr. Fletcher used in the general direction of Captain Bligh. "kiss my arse", after Bligh accused Fletcher of stealing from his hord of coconuts.

That was a very stressfull moment for all the crew indeed. Very stressfull.

But it's all water under the bridge now (Haw, Haw, Haw).

I say, let's all have a drink. Here. Pass the bottle to me will you.

Hey John O'L, Celtic Woman could out-rock the Stones any day of the week !! All this without snorting some relatives' ashes (sicko). Sheesh! How has that wierdo stayed 'functional' all this time ?!?!

Another of the Stones enduring qualities is not to take themselves too seriously. This is lost on people who do.
