Gene....FUN "link"....Thanks.....I used to win trivia contests with "Pancho & Loco"...nice memories. I knew the Lone Ranger's nephew's horse's name, but can't remember even his nephew"s name tonight! Given this is a "music" (strrretch)site, does anyone remember the verse to "Happy Trails" WITHOUT checking the database? (INTEGRITY TEST!!)

The lone ranger's nephew's name was Dan.

He had a horse? His horse had a name? Fred?

I was a big Lone Ranger fan. It always got me when he and Tonto rode off into the sunset before the grateful townfolk got a chance to thank them.Hopalong Cassidy was also a part of my Saturday mornings for a long time. There was also a guy who dressed all in black and used a whip instead of a gun. Lash Larue, maybe? And of course The Cisco Kid and Pancho! "Hey Cisco?" "Hey Pancho!"

The Lone Ranger andDan Reid had a great grand son/nephew who stayed in Law Enforcement.

Any Idea who he is?

Britt Reid (Reed?) was aka "The Green Hornet" of radio fame.

Lash Larue's grandson, Rusty, plays for the Bulls. An odd sort of symmetry there.

No, I remember Zorro. All dressed in black, true, but primarily a sword guy. Me and my buddies spent a lot of time shouting " Ha! Take that, Sergeant Garcia!" and carving invisible Z's on each other's stomachs. I think Lash Larue is right for the Whip guy.

Lash Larue-Al to his friends-dressed all in black; actually he looked more like the villain than the hero. Another whipper was Whip Wilson in the early 50s. He didn't dress all in black. Didn't act much better than the guy in black, either.

Hate to get "Canajun" on you, but anyone remember Sgt. Preston of the Yukon and his dog "Yukon King"? He didn't have a horse (deep snow), but when he cried "Mush! On you huskies, On!! I knew he'd be catchin' the bad guys soon. Should I be surprised that most of them were French-Canadian, or "half-breeds"? Guess that was the 50s for you.

Another Canadian "cowboy equivalent" show was about Pierre Raddison (founder of the Hudson's Bay Co.) and his goofy sidekick "Gooseberries". (NO I'm not making this up!) Since a whole series on fur-trapping would be pretty dull they divvied up their time by "killin' a beaver" and then "catchin' a bad guy" (half-breeds again!)

P.S. I'm so glad that someone answered the "Tarzan" thing. My mind was wandering in dangerous areas.

Great list,Gene! When I was 5 my folks took me up to the William s Hart Ranch in Southern Cal, and Fritz was still alive. This was 1954 and Fritz was a very old horse, having appeared in the Silent Movies with Hart. It was love at first sight between me and Fritz. My Dad held me up to scratch his nose and after that Fritz watched my every move from the corral, neighing to me to come back. My parents had a hard time convincing me that we couldn't take Fritz home with us.

Rick, I was a huge Sgt. Preston fan. Seems like they only used one set, the interior of a log cabin with a howling snowstorm outside. That was my image of Canada for years.

Remember Sky King? My favorite episode was the one where he parachuted out of the Songbird to land on the cab of a runaway bus full of orphans. Don't remember if Sky had a horse, but he had a lovely niece named Penny and a ranch called The Flying Crown.

Yeah, that good ol' log cabin. Remember it well, although I was about 10 at the time. Funny how things like that stick and 5 years of algebra are a meaningless blur. There was also a "headquarters set" where the good sergeant would talk on the phone to his mysterious superiors, before braving the blizzard again.

In one of the most bizarre TV shows I've ever seen, the CBC brought the very young black and white Bob Dylan to the screen. He wandered back and forth through a log bunkhouse annoying a bunch of solemn loggers (who all wore checkered shirts and smoked intensely) with "chimes of Freedom, and "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands". Real loggers would have strung him up, or at least sent him to the cook house to wash dishes.

Anyone remember the theme song from Sgt. Preston? Somehow I'm thinking the music was awesome ( at least for a child...).wondering if I heard it now, what I'd think.

Sky King...was it Nabisco? And How many "points" on the Flying Crown" crown?

Jimmy Stewart always rode "Pie" in all his westerns. His friend Henry Fonda hated horses but was an excellent painter and gave Jimmy a portrait of Pie which became one of his most prized possesions.

The theme music for Challenge of the Yukon (aka Sgt Preston of the Yukon) was the Donna Diana Overture by Reznichek (chek spelling). Sgt. Preston was produced by the same folks who gave you the Lone Ranger, and used the same acting company. Brace Beemer the most well known LR, but not the first one, also filled the role of SP. on occasion.--John

John(not Jon)...How do you know all this STUFF????? I assume I can find the (Sgt. Preston)music at my library....now I NEED to hear it again. One of my most vivid memories from childhood is being taken to Radio City Music Hall by my aunt. The orchestra played "William Tell Overture" which was thrilling for me (who was adding "HI-HO Silver....Away" in my mind!!). I can still hear and feel how the music was making my seat vibrate. Once again I have to rely on a somewhat confusing dictionary of Spanish variants. In Tijuana the name seems to translate differently. I think the name there means:

"Man whose underwear is ruined by the local water."

Is Walt going to come along here too and ask, "Is that guy serious?" NOW THAT was the finniest thing I'd seen in a long while.

Gene, thanks for the links and to all the rest for the retouching of memories. I had the pleasure of meeting Arkansas Slim Andrews and had him at our park several times to play his assortment of odd instruments and talk about his days in the "Toby" shows and his experience as Tex Ritter's sidekick. He was also a treasure of jokes. One of his best, he had just had $40 worth of groceries stolen from his car. He thought they were safe. He had them in the glove compartment.

No one has yet mentioned Bobby Benson and the Bar-B something - possibly for good reason. I do not remember much about it except that he was a kid, or at least pretending to be one, and I was a kid, and I listened to it.

Like the swiftest arrow whistling from a bow
Like a mighty cannonball he used to fly
You'd hear about him everywhere you'd go
And ev..ry..one..knows CHAMPION THE WONDER HORSE
CHAMPION THE WONDER HORSE

I used to love the horse but hated the snivelling, whiney kid that used to get to ride "Champ" sigh next I'll be giving you my rendition of the theme from the Flintstone. How the hell did a British kid keep so much american stuff in his head?

Arkie--Re. Bobby Benson

Bobby Benson was the kid owner of the B-Bar-B ranch. His guardian and foreman was a guy named Tex. Often on their adventures Tex would take on the disguise of the Lemonade Kid...remember this was a kids' show so no booze allowed. At least that's how I recollect it, pard. I do not recall this show being on TV or the big screen, only radio and comic books.

Another radio cowboy(?) was Straight Arrow who was a rancher named Steve somethingorother until an evil needed being made right. That was sponsored by N-A-B-I-S-C-O, Nabisco is the name to know. The tie-in with the sponsor was a series of outdoor survival lore the Indian way packaged as the dividers in the cereal box.

These shows were on the air 50 years ago, so I guess that makes you really old, Arkie (or at least about my age).--John
