Obit: Dodi Kallick (30 March 2007)

From: BK Lick

Kathy has asked me to post this for her.
It is with a great sense of loss and release that I announce the passing of my mother, Dodi Kallick, on March 30, 2007.

Born Dolores Bea Caplow on Nov. 26, 1929 in Chicago, Dodi (as she was known by all) spent her whole life in the Chicago area, which she loved. She was a painter, sculptor, artist's model, quilter, doll-maker, fabric artist, musician and music teacher.

A pivotal member of the folk revival in Chicago, Dodi was instrumental in the forming of the Chicago folk scene of the late 1950s and '60s, the founding of the Old Town School of Folk Music, and the launching of performance venues such as The No Exit Cafe, It's Here, Poor Richard's, The Earl Of Old Town, and many others. In addition, she helped introduce the sound of the mountain dulcimer, as well as a wide variety of traditional music, to the urban folk audience.

Dodi is survived by daughters Katherine Kallick and Sarah Kallick; son Steven Kallick; grandchildren Jennifer Waller, Madeline Thompson, Jeremy Kallick, Joshua Kallick, Mattias Vanderwerf, and Emily Vanderwerf; sister Sharon Caplow Todd; niece Delia Todd; and former husband Bruce Kallick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to StreetWise, The Old Town School of Folk Music Teaching Program, or Seasons Hospice.

The family invites you to join them in a memorial gathering for Dodi Kallick at the Unitarian Church of Evanston, 1330 Ridge Ave. (at Dempster), Evanston, IL, on Saturday, May 26, 2007, from 3:00 – 5:00 pm.

I didn't know of Dodi until I bought Kathy Kallick's CD - "My Mother's Voice" - some time back. It quickly became one of my all-time favourite recordings!! - and what a lovely tribute.

Vale, Dodi.

I want to thank Dodi for inspiring many to make music --
including Kathy who has always brought good music to the world.
Her music is a tribute to her mother, and I send condolances
to Kathy and the other family members and friends who are
missing Dodi right now. Carry on the music in her memory!

Mention of the good lady takes me back quite a few years; met, and heard her perform, just once, but was aware of her stature in the Chicago music scene and could understand it from her performance.
You who can, carry it on in such a one's honor.

I am saddened by this news. I met Dodi at Fox Hollow and went back to Evansten with her for a week or two. I left the country, soon after, and I lost touch with her but I have never forgotten that delightful interlude. Kathy, you have my sincere sympathy and, in my small way, I share your loss.

Thanks so much to all who have posted. It really feels good to read stuff about my mom, talk about her, and keep her around some more. She loved to talk about her trips to Fox Hollow, and all the music and friends. We sang alot together over the last 6 months, and that was fun for both of us. She had that magic phrasing( that I've been trying to get right for so long) right up to the end. For a little woman, she left some mighty big shoes to fill. Lucky for me, she was my teacher for my whole life. I'm still learning some crucial stuff from my mom, and doing my best to pass it on to my girls, so the apple won't fall too far from the tree. Kathy, please accept my condolences for your terrible loss.

Dody was a remarkable person. When I first came to Chicago to play guitar for Bonnie Kolok in the late '60s, Dody was one of the local musicians who took me under their protective wings. I have many fond memories of her music, her vivacious personality and, most of all, her kindness.

...and then there were her brownies!! Simply wonderful.

There was a time in the 60s that I was ready to chuck it all and quit singing folk songs. Joe Moore, the owner of the No Exit Cafe and Gallery (coffeehouse) in Chicago, started me doing every Thursday night at his club just to keep me "doin' it~" Many Thursdays, as we were packing up for the night, Dodi showed up with a baking pan filled with freshly made brownies. That meant it'd be at least 2 more hours before I could start home. The brownies were always wonderful!!

And so are the memories...

I've put up a few mp3s of some things Dodi recorded back in the 60s.

Little Willie Wee (Polly Garter's song from Under Milkwood)
Sally Free and Easy
When I Was a Young Girl
Lowlands of Holland
Cotton-Eye Joe
Red Clay Country
Row Us Over the Tide
What Are They Doing in Heaven Today
I'm a Long Time Travelling (Gonna Lay This Body Down)

Some recording notes say that she learned Cotton-Eye Joe from Bob Coltman, Red Clay Country from Paul Clayton, and What Are They Doing in Heaven Today from Henry Moore. Takes ya back, don't it?

Bruce----Thanks so much for that! I really do appreciate you finding those songs and putting 'em here. She was even better than I remember. ------- You put me in mind of the time Joe Moore was making an espresso for someone with the big steam machine right in the middle of one of Dodi's quiet songs---which most of them were as I think about it now. If I remember right, she lost it and heaved a rather heavy ashtray at Joe who was behind the counter. ----- Years later I did the same thing--but with a beefsteak, platter and all -- in Joe's Green Dragon Inn up in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Only now do I see a connection. FOND MEMORIES!!

Thank you so much, everybody, for all your kind words, shared memories, anecdotes, and good wishes. These things really do help to keep a person with us, and listening to those beautiful, old recordings is a very powerful experience indeed. My mom really did have her own style,in everything she did, right up to the end. When she signed her DNR she promptly burst into Finnigan's Wake, and sang it in it's entirety. It really cracked me up.One of the songs she wanted us to sing together fairly often in the last 6 months was Footprints In The Snow. So, it's been going through my head;
"Now she's up in heaven, she's with the angel band
I know I'm going to meet her in that promised land
Every time the snow falls it brings back memories..." and so on. Yeah, fond memories. Kathy

I met Dodi only once or twice in the early 60's at her home in Evanston "when I was a young girl" (wild teenager). I believe she taught me that song, and taught me the cords to "Once I had a sweetheart, and now I've got none..." This is the first song I ever learned on the guitar; I later sang it to my daughter as part of our bedtime repertoire. I am now in my sixties, and I have tried to find news of her, but just heard Kathy Kallick's song on WFMT tonight and heard the news of her passing. I am sorry she has passed. I remember her as caring and generous. I remember the No Exit Cafe well.

Dodi took me under her wing in the early 70s when I was waitressing at the No Exit Cafe. I took some guitar and mountain dulcimer lessons from her, in which I soon learned I was not the least talented, but she gently bore with me anyway. Her simple, gracious home on Maple Street in Evanston, with warm, freshly baked bread, honey and herb teas opened my soul, if not my musicality, to new horizons. She was deeply appreciative of the simple pleasures of life and her carefulness about the turn of a phrase gave me fresh respect for the long traditions of folk music. She had the gift of slowing one down so that one could take in the moment, feel the sunbeams on the face, and hear an inner chord's resonance. Her affection for people, her musical gifts and her hospitality are a legacy that I hope endures in our memories.

Some years ago, I had been thinking affectionately about Dodi and had tried, unsuccessfully, to get back in touch with her. Last night I learned of her passing on the Midnight Special. My deepest condolences to Kathy and all Dodi's family and circle of close friends.

Hello Betty, and Herb as well,

Today is Monday. Yesterday, in the Sunday Chicago Tribune, was a tardy little obituary for Dodi. It was quite a nice one I thought--as those truncated things go usually.

Betty, it has been a long time passing.

All the best,

Art

I just learned of Dodi's passing a few days ago; wish I could be there to share in the memorial service, at the Unitarian church they introduced me to back then, among so many other things. We were friends in the '60s, the Kallick family and I, sharing many things, most notably music of many kinds, sometimes during and after my babysitting for the Kallick kids in their very young days.

it is sad to be confronted with Dodi's passing, but it is nourishing to relive the beauty of her music and her soul. (I am especially grateful to those who posted mp3s and URLs.)

My best wishes and love to all of you who saw, felt, shared, appreciated all of that; and most and deepest of all, to the Kallick family.
Jeff

Kathy..... these recordings are so wonderful. I'd forgotten how lovely your mom's voice was. I can still hear her in my head .....sitting with my mother singing.... Lee, Louise, Betty and Herb.... how wonderful... Fox Hollow...."Sam Gone Away".... "The Rolling Hills of the Border". That whole time was amazing. You and I were so young... I was twelve when we moved to Chicago and lived with the Greening's.... soon to meet your family. I'm now 55...many years older than our parents were when they would sing....   Again, my thoughts are with you. Hillary

Thank you to all who posted here about my mom, and those of you who came to the memorial. It was a lovely event, very plain, plenty of food, some singing, just the way mom would have liked it. It was wonderful to hear stories, and memories. Great tidbits from old students of mom's, who spoke of learning so much , often about things other than music! Well, we did our best to conjur a bit of her spirit, and honor that. It felt great. Though I still miss her more than I could ever have imagined, I do what I can to keep her close. All those stories really help. Thanks to all- Kathy

Dodi was my dulcimer teacher and friend when I was a young man, living in Chicago in the mid-1970s. She took me to see Howlin' Wolf at Eddie Shaw's Blues Club, and taught me many wonderful things, and shared with me many wonderful things.

I still play the mountain dulcimer and listen to songs she recorded for me during our lessons.

Her renditions of "Bright Morning Star" and "Who'll Rock the Cradle" can bring tears to a man's eyes.
