It really feels good to read stuff about my mom, talk about her, and keep her around some more. She loved to talk about her trips to Fox Hollow,and all the music and friends. We sang alot together over the last 6 months, and that was fun for both of us. She had that magic phrasing( that I've been trying to get right for so long) right up to the end. For a little woman, she left some mighty big shoes to fill. Lucky for me, she was my teacher for my whole life. There was a time in the 60s that I was ready to chuck it all and quit singing folk songs. Joe Moore, the owner of the No Exit Cafe and Gallery (coffeehouse) in Chicago, started me doing every Thursday night at his club just to keep me "doin' it~" Many Thursdays, as we were packing up for the night, Dodi showed up with a baking pan filled with freshly made brownies. That meant it'd be at least 2 more hours before I could start home. The brownies were always wonderful!! And so are the memories... Art |

If I remember right, she lost it and heaved a rather heavy ashtray at Joe who was behind the counter. ----- Years later I did the same thing--but with a beefsteak, platter and all -- in Joe's Green Dragon Inn up in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. These things really do help to keep a person with us, and listening to those beautiful, old recordings is a very powerful experience indeed. My mom really did have her own style,in everything she did, right up to the end. When she signed her DNR she promptly burst into Finnigan's Wake, and sang it in it's entirety. It really cracked me up.One of the songs she wanted us to sing together fairly often in the last 6 months was Footprints In The Snow. So, it's been going through my head; "Now she's up in heaven, she's with the angel band I know I'm going to meet her in that promised land Every time the snow falls it brings back memories..." and so on. I believe she taught me that song, and taught me the cords to "Once I had a sweetheart, and now I've got none..." This is the first song I ever learned on the guitar; I later sang it to my daughter as part of our bedtime repertoire. I am now in my sixties, and I have tried to find news of her, but just heard Kathy Kallick's song on WFMT tonight and heard the news of her passing. I am sorry she has passed. I remember her as caring and generous. I remember the No Exit Cafe well. |

I took some guitar and mountain dulcimer lessons from her, in which I soon learned I was not the least talented, but she gently bore with me anyway. Her simple, gracious home on Maple Street in Evanston, with warm, freshly baked bread, honey and herb teas opened my soul, if not my musicality, to new horizons. She was deeply appreciative of the simple pleasures of life and her carefulness about the turn of a phrase gave me fresh respect for the long traditions of folk music. She had the gift of slowing one down so that one could take in the moment, feel the sunbeams on the face, and hear an inner chord's resonance. Her affection for people, her musical gifts and her hospitality are a legacy that I hope endures in our memories. Some years ago, I had been thinking affectionately about Dodi and had tried, unsuccessfully, to get back in touch with her. Last night I learned of her passing on the Midnight Special. My deepest condolences to Kathy and all Dodi's family and circle of close friends. Kathy G |

We were friends in the '60s, the Kallick family and I, sharing many things, most notably music of many kinds, sometimes during and after my babysitting for the Kallick kids in their very young days. it is sad to be confronted with Dodi's passing, but it is nourishing to relive the beauty of her music and her soul. It was a lovely event, very plain, plenty of food, some singing, just the way mom would have liked it. It was wonderful to hear stories, and memories. Great tidbits from old students of mom's, who spoke of learning so much , often about things other than music! Well, we did our best to conjur a bit of her spirit, and honor that. It felt great. She took me to see Howlin' Wolf at Eddie Shaw's Blues Club, and taught me many wonderful things, and shared with me many wonderful things. I still play the mountain dulcimer and listen to songs she recorded for me during our lessons. Her renditions of "Bright Morning Star" and "Who'll Rock the Cradle" can bring tears to a man's eyes. |
