Lyr Req: Confidents: 'I can't believe you like me'

From: GUEST,HW

I'm sure the wonderful mudcat community will be able to help me with this. I am trying to track down the words to a song written by Sid Kipper's real life alter ego, Chris Sugden. I think it's called @I can't believe you like me' ... the first line (or fist line to one of the verses) is 'I can't believe you like me. I've got a double chin. I don't know how much longer I can hold my stomach in.' Funny and poignant at the same time. Damien Barber is the singer I associate it with but I've tried his site and Sid Kipper's with no luck for lyrics. If anyone could post the lyrics that'd be great, or if either Damien or Chris have recorded the song perhaps someone could tell me which album it's on.

Thank you.

If you ever run into the shanty crew 'Landlocked' one of their number recorded it on their album 'Where seagulls dare' my Mum has it somewhere but her CD collection is hopelessly disorganised, I don't hold much hope of finding it, if I do I'll see if I can find time to sort lyrics!

As far as I know the title of the song is "Confidence" which might help in searching for it.

I beleive it is SlipKnot that has the antithesis...

You are Nothing But a Stupid Piece of Shit

Slip In and Slip Out!

NOT ALL "MUSIC" IS STABLE OR SUITABLE FOR YOUNG MINDS UNDER 28 YOA....same accepted age for piercings and tatoo.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Please edit, discuss, communicate, with your child regarding their lyrics, groups, websites. They WANT to learn from you...and YOU will learn more than you ever expected from them.

Thanks everyone. I rather thought Damien must have recorded it, but couldn't find it on a track listing. If I'd known the title it would have helped! I'll be able to get a copy of Damien's CD now. Though I must say I'm intrigued to imagine how it's got onto 'Landlocked's shanty CD ...

I think they just wanted a break from the norm, the last 3 or 4 songs on the CD are solo non-shanty efforts from various members of the crew.

The reason for the "extra" folk songs at the end of the CD is because after recoding all the songs they wanted, they found that they still had some recoding time left so each of them decided to sing a favourite solo folk song.

It was John Thrawl who sang the song on the CD and when we attended some of the singarounds at the end of the day at the festivals he was nearly always asked to sing it. I've got to say, though you might call me biased, I've never heard anybody sing it better. He was even asked to sing it, on a barge in the Hull marina, for a couple who had just been married.

When I get home I'll get the CD out and write down the words and post it.

As promised, please find lyrics below. It really is a lovely song, when sung in the right temperament.

THE CONFIDENTS

I can't believe you like me. I've got a double chin.
I don't know how much longer I can hold me stomach in.
Me clothes are not in fashion, as anyone can see,
So why did you come over and sit down next to me?

I can't believe you like me. I'm really just as mess.
You say we are the same age, though you look five years less.
You're witty and you're charming, and clearly not unwise,
So why do you keep staring and gazing in my eyes?

I can't believe you like me. I've had a drop to drink.
I'm smoking like a chimney and you don't smoke, I think.
If you said goodbye and left me, I'd surely understand,
So why are we two walking back to your place hand in hand?

I can't believe you like me. It's such tidy flat.
I'm making conversation but I'm talking through me hat.
And in this brighter light, you can confirm all of your doubts,
So why are you suggesting that we miss the coffee out?

I can't believe you like me. Oh, can't you feel me shake?
I know at any moment you will realise your mistake.
Soon you will be hinting that I should disappear,
So how come we are kissing and how come I'm still here?

I can't believe you like me, but the sun is rising now.
We're talking and touching. The night has flown somehow.
I can't believe you like me, so how can this be true,
That you just whispered that you can't believe that I like you?

Thank you Alan! It's years since I heard the song but it just sort of stuck with me. Love the last line twist.

Your welcome Heather.

By the way, you'll have to keep a sharp eye out for any of our CD's for sale. Where Seagulls Dare was our last one, back in 1999, and the last time we saw one for sale it was in the bargain bin!

If you see us at one of the festivals let yourself be known to us.

All the best

Alan

Thanks Alanabit - I didn't realise that Ian (whom I've heard perform at Herga and at the Oxford folk club, though not recently) sang it too!
