18 Apr 07 - 07:10 PM (#2029364) Subject: Dance: Amazing Red River Jig From: GUEST,meself I've seen it danced a thousand times, but never quite like this. The clip is about two-and-a-half minutes - for the full effect, watch it right through; when it gets to the last dancer, you'll see what I'm talking about. The way this dance works: a sort of workaday shuffle is done for the high-pitched turn; during the second, low-pitched turn, the dancer does his or her fancy steps. The Asham stompers seem to be based in Reedy Creek, Manitoba, which is near Ebb & Flow, which is right next to Bacon Ridge, which is just down the road from Kinosota, not terribly far from Ste. Rose-du-Lac. The dancers are Metis, i.e. mixed Native and white, i.e., "halfbreed". You could call the Red River Jig their "national" dance. |

19 Apr 07 - 09:38 AM (#2029902) Subject: RE: Dance: Amazing Red River Jig From: GUEST,meself Yup. It seems to me, on further thought, that the Asham Stompers are probably based in Winnipeg, but the "ancestral home" of the Ashams is in the Reedy Creek area, and it looks like they put on a festival in Reedy Creek every summer now. Nice to see in an area that has been so marginal economically for so many years. Rich in culture, though. |

If you use the forward arrow on the embedded player, you can fast forward to Arvel Bird playing it. Really well done! |
