guess what song it was

This is just a little game, something to cheer you up in a world of bad news.

Monday I was having a casino buffet with my dear husband. The usual rackety canned music was playing, and commented on it. That brought him to describe an act that had performed in the casino itself on Sunday night. They were four men from Surrey, England, and they were performing hits of yore.

"It must be discouraging to be singing your heart out for a bunch of slot players who never even look up," said the DH. He was thoughtful for moment. "Of course, there were feet tapping all over the joint."

"A professional would notice that," I said.

"There was one number that got a lot of applause. People were actually singing along. Even pit bosses were singing along [those stone-faced arbiters.] Come to think of it, there was a cheer when it started."

Mudcatters, now try to name the song. Just for fun, guess.

Wimoweh, the Lion Sleeps tonight, or Mbube, is an indestructible song.
It is an assignment for my students every year to study the work of a Record Producer of their choice, then demonstrate their understanding of production and arrangement technique by recording a version of this song.
This year we have a version based on Guns & Roses, another in the style of Bowie with Lou Reed, a DJ Aphrodite version, a Rockabilly one and a Lee Perry Reggae.
The song survives everything we do to it.
Hats off to the late Soloman Linda, whose family finally got their dues for it not long ago.
Nobody has ever done a folkie version though.
Cheers
Dave
