See previous threads. The search engine will reward you if you type wee oss or some such into it.

Big Mick ~ for the unenlightened... Padstow May Day. It starts at midnight with the night singing, get a short rest before the whole town is decorated for May with sycamore, bluebells and cowslips which are brought into the town. Sunrise for those that are of that persuasion, then at various times in the morning the 'Old 'Oss or the Peace 'Oss will come from their respective stables and dance through the town before returning to be put away for another year at nidnight. The cry is 'Oss 'Oss and response is Wee 'Oss. You have to see it at least once in your life, but be warned, if you come once you will never want to be anywhere else but in Padstow on May Day. Padstonians from all over the world come back to Padstow for May Day or make sure they phone and hear the 'Oss as she passes. so, 'Oss 'Oss ... Google Padstow May Day.

I'm wearing my Padstow tee-shirt and I took my accordion to work. Played the Oss song to the guys at work and now I'm cooking pasties for dinner. We are 11 hours ahead of Cornwall at the moment so our day is coming to an end while the kids Oss will be out and dancing shortly. The Blue and Red Oss teams will be getting ready right now.
But I still hope for a phone call in a few hours, to hear the festivities live.
OSS OSS!

Sorry to be missing it. You can still hear the drums in your head days after they have stopped.
I wondered if there might be a web-cam, but the closest I can find is the Lifeboat Station. Not much happening there (I am pleased to note) except weather.
Does the Cardboard Oss still get out on the Tuesday?
Quack!

I do wish I could be with you all this year but I'll be at Upton on Severn as usual. Hope you all have a wonderful time.

Unite and unite let us all unite,
For summer is acome unto day,
And whither we are going we will all unite,
In the merry morning of May.

Oh God, wish I was there too.

Every so often the Oss "dies" and everybody sings:

"Oh where is St. George, Oh where is he O
He's out in his longboat All on the salt sea O.
Up flies the kite Down falls the lark O
Aunt Ursula Birdhood she had an old yowe
And she died in her own park O"

The Teazer touches the Oss with his/her club and the Oss comes back to life - everybody sings
"With a merry ring and now the joyful Spring
For summer is acome unto day
How happy are those little birds and the merrier we will sing
In the merry morning of May".

Tes magic you see. Go at least once in your life, you will always want to go back.

How happy are the little birds that merrily do sing,
or
And give to us a cup of ale and the merrier we will sing.

We heard it - coming up St Edmund's Lane!
OSS OSS!

Haven't been since 1990. I taped it as it went round on my old Sony cassette recorder. Oh those drums!

Oss Oss!

A page of images to give a flavour of the event:   'Oss 'Oss Padstow

Perhaps next year I might get there- never having been....

Last Sunday they announced on Countryfile that they were going to Padstow to record the Mayday activities and that the programme would be coming from there this coming Sunday. I'm hoping to get a friend to put the programme onto DVD or video so that I can watch when I get back from Upton Festival.

I sang the Mayday Carol from St. Just-in-Roseland at Devizes Folk Club last night and will use just one line from that to all both at Padstow and Mudcat.

"God Bless you all both great and small, and send you a joyful May."

Brightest of Blessings, (now work that one out!).

Polly

Noreen I love the pictures but the second one is the dragon and St George from Helston's Halanto. How did they get in there?

What a great day!

And sunny too, which is why I'm lobster-coloured from sitting by the harbour all day. (Forgot the hat and sun-cream).

John Craven said they'd been filming both Monday (in the rain) and Tuesday and the edited programme will be shown this Sunday on Countryfile.

They didn't get down far enough along the harbour to film that other bit of Padstow history with his guitar and baseball hat but more Breezettes turned up and we all had a good sing.
