The story of the tragedy is found elsewhere on the 'net. One line is missing, and I'm trying to locate a tune. British Library and RVW Library hold no clues. Can anyone help? Caernarvon Bay There was a sadness round the fireside in many a home one day When news of a gallant ship lost in Caernarvon Bay The news it swept around us like a message from the grave How the gallant ship The Cyprian found at last a watery grave. The sea beat o'er the vessel's deck as a hopeless wreck she lay And the crew were all despairing on that wild October day The skipper looked around him but no other sight could see Save the bounding of the billows and the rocks upon his lee. Then he turned to his brave seamen as he scanned the raging waves Says he: 'All hope has left us we must swim our lives to save.' He was putting on his lifebelt when the form first met his sight It was the crouching trembling form of a little stowaway. His heart seemed touched within him at that wild despairing cry (line missing?) For he said: 'Here lad, take this belt. Your life perhaps 'twill save Whilst as for me I'll do my best to battle with the waves.' It was a wild and fearful conflict that fight for daring life And many a noble mariner perished in the strife The noble-hearted skipper who dared the boisterous waves Lost his life in that fierce conflict whilst the stowaway was saved. Oh tell me not 'tis the battle field the most glorious deeds are done, And in the pomp and strife of war the noblest laurels won. There never was a nobler action recorded in minstrel lay Than the skipper of The Cyprian when he saved that stowaway Yes in memory long it will linger that story of the wave Of the gallant ship The Cyprian and her skipper true and brave. |

I have just been trying to decipher the old script of something similar and think that they are different versions of the same song. |
