Did you ever wonder how far your salary would go in other parts of the United States? I found a nifty little conversion chart that can give you an idea. Even if you have no thoughts of moving, it's kind of fun to check out! Cost of Living Comparison for the US

Yes, I've thought of it in terms of moving to a climate that is less severe than the rockies. Also, if I retire somewhere else, how far would social security go? thanks for the link.

Just compared Bozeman with Albuquerque. I would be paying 14.786%        less for Utilities if I moved to Albuquerque.

Housing for me would cost more in Portland, Oregon and Washington DC but everything else would be less than in Juneau Alaska.

I guess I oughta go back where I came from:

If you move from Washington-Arlington-Alexandria DC-VA to Wichita KS...
Groceries will cost:        22.222%        less
Housing will cost:        60.222%        less
Utilities will cost:        20.363%        less
Transportation will cost:        9.058%        less
Healthcare will cost:        17.181%        less

Bill D- but how much less do they pay?

Interesting comparisons. I tried the Abilene Texas to Rio Rancho New Mexico move and I would need about 20% more income.

A long time ago I tried to find a song with the line, "It's free of sin and dry as a bone, Abilene forever," but no luck. When I was in Texas years ago, Abilene was dry and depended on bootleggers for booze. I remember driving there at night- the road was clearly marked by the reflections from all the beer cans that had been thrown into the verge.

Is there one of these for the UK?

I know I'd pay less in housing and food, but I'd have to run the car more due to lack of public transport if I moved away from London...

Not always, Liz. I find food, particulary eating out, very reasonable in the big smoke. Housing - Yea - what can you say. Transport - I live in Manchester at weekends and Newcastle through the week. Manchester does not have a good integrated transport system while Newcastle does. Generaly speaking I don't think our cost of living varies that much across the country if you exclude house prices.

Q...since I am now on a mostly fixed retirement income, salary is of little concern. My house would sell for enough to allow me at least as much room & comfort, and other lower expenses would allow a few luxuries...

...except that most of the luxuries I want are not IN Wichita....*wry grin*. I have now spent about 40% of my life in the Wash DC area....I think I'm hooked.

I've thought of reversing the current migration trend, and going to somewhere like Poland. What's the Health-Care like?
