Obit: Peter Carlisle (UK - 8 May 2007)

08 May 07 - 01:35 PM (#2046268)
Subject: Obit: Peter Carlisle
From: Polly Squeezebox

It is with great sadness that I pass on the news that Peter died this afternoon. He had been due to steward at Upton Festival over the past weekend, but we learned on Thursday that he had suffered a severe stroke. Peter was never a performer so far as I know - but a quiet, gentle soul in the background of many festivals, helping with stewarding or other background jobs.

Our thoughts are with Liz and family.

Pauline and Jack

So sorry to read this thread, didn't know the guy as far as I know, but bet he checked my ticket somewhere, sometime, as an organiser I really do know the value of the "backstage workers". Rest in peace & thank you for all your work. To your family there is nothing I can say that will ease your loss, just be proud of him.

Just to let people know that Peter's Funeral will be held on Wednesday May 23rd near Banbury. Liz and Peter's Mum Barbara are very keen to have as many of Peter's Folkie friends there as possible to give Peter a really good send-off. Before the funeral Peter's coffin will be brought into Banbury on top of his narrow boat 'Grampus' and Liz is hoping that there will be lots of musicians to play him along.

I don't really think it's appropriate to publish all the details here, please PM me for further information.

Am pretty sure that Liz doesn't get into the MudCat, but I'll be printing this thread out to take to the funeral just in case no-one points her this way. I'm certain that she and Peter's Mum will be glad of these messages of support, so keep 'em coming, especially memories if you can!

Very sorry Splotty and I can`t be there today but here`s a poem for Pete;

WHAT IS DYING?
A ship sails and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon,
and someone at my side says "she is gone".
Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all,
She is just as large as when I saw her......
The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her,
and just at the moment when someone at my side says "she is gone",
there are others who are watching her coming,
and other voices take up a glad shout "there she comes!"........
And that is dying.

Thinking of you Liz.
X

Liz was with Pete on his narrow boat together what should she do now?
The Grief process is a tough one. Catters could advise as Liz has been asking how others have coped.

The funeral day for Peter was a very moving experience and organised so that Family, Friends and Folkies were all able to share in the celebration of Peter's life.

I've given the printout of this thread (up to the 21st) to Liz (though she's been unable to read any of it, or even to open the cards that have arrived) and I'll print further messages out to send to Liz when we get back from Cornwall & Devon, so please carry on posting your support here for Liz.

In life you need to put differences apart before its too late.
Devastated.

Hello, Damon. His friends here may appreciate any memories you wish to write about your dad. In any case, please know you are not alone in your grief. Find someone to tell about your happy memories, your sorrows, regrets...stories about you and your dad.

Express your love for your dad in some way. He sounds like a gentle man from many of the comments here- likely he'd not want you to torture yourself.

Best wishes,

Maeve

He loved his boat grampus and was a proud day when he showed me what he had put on the side, Peter Carlile and Son.

He found peace on his boat and in folk music. I went to his grave today and was a lovely place.

It's always a bonus when a thread like this surfaces. Somehow I missed Peter's demise the first time around. So that has now been properly rectified with an entry in the "In Memoriam" roll of honour. My condolences to all who knew and love him.

RIP
